    Description: Abundant volcanic activity occurs in the back‐arc region of the northern Tofua island arc where the Northeast Lau Spreading Center (NELSC) propagates southwards into older crust causing the formation of numerous seamounts at the propagating rift tip. An off‐axis volcanic diagonal ridge (DR) occurs at the eastern flank of the NELSC, linking the large rear‐arc volcano Niuatahi with the NELSC. New geochemical data from the NELSC, the southern propagator seamounts, and DR reveal that the NELSC lavas are tholeiitic basalts whereas the rear‐arc volcanoes typically erupt lavas with boninitic composition. The sharp geochemical boundary probably reflects the viscosity contrast between off‐axis hydrous harzburgitic mantle and dry fertile mantle beneath the NELSC. The new data do not indicate an inflow of Samoa plume mantle into the NELSC, confirming previously published He isotope data. The NELSC magmas form by mixing of an enriched and a depleted Indian Ocean‐type upper mantle end‐member implying a highly heterogeneous upper mantle composition in this area. Most NELSC lavas are little affected by a slab component implying that melting is adiabatic beneath the spreading center. The DR lavas show the influence of a component from the subducted Louisville Seamount Chain, which was previously thought to be restricted to the nearby arc volcanoes Niuatoputapu and Tafahi. This signature is rarely detected along the NELSC implying little mixing of melts from the low‐viscosity hydrous portion of the mantle wedge beneath the rear‐arc volcanoes into the melting region of the dry mantle beneath the NELSC.
    Description: Plain Language Summary: Volcanic activity is abundant at subduction zones and the chemical analysis of the erupted rocks allows to determine the material transport in the Earth's mantle. The Northeast Lau Spreading Center (NELSC) forms by extension and volcanism behind the northern Tofua island arc. Several large volcanic structures occur east of the NELSC and the lavas of these off‐axis volcanoes are chemically and isotopically distinct implying little mixing with the magmas of the NELSC. The differences suggest decompression melting of relatively dry mantle beneath the NELSC whereas the off‐axis volcanoes reflect melting of water‐rich mantle affected by fluids from the subducting Pacific Plate. The sharp geochemical boundary between the NELSC and off‐axis volcanoes is probably due to a large viscosity contrast between hydrous harzburgitic mantle and dry fertile mantle. Element and isotope ratios indicate that the NELSC magmas form by mixing of enriched and depleted portions of the upper mantle, and we do not find evidence for inflow of the Samoa deep mantle plume from the north. Some of the off‐axis lavas contain a component from a volcanic chain that was subducted some 4 million years ago and that was previously only known in two volcanoes of the Tofua island arc.

    Description: Profiles of a total of 23 plagioclase crystals erupted within the 1982-1991 and 1993 flows of the Coaxial segment of the Juan de Fuca ridge, the 1996 flow of the North Gorda ridge, and from the Western Volcanic Zone of the ultra-slow spreading Gakkel Ridge, have been studied for variations in major and trace element concentrations. We derive equilibration times for the relatively rapidly diffusing Sr in mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) plagioclase crystals of the order of months to a few years in each case. All crystals preserve diffusive disequilibria of strontium and barium. Crystal residence times at MORB magmatic temperatures are thus significantly shorter, of the order of days to a few months at most, precluding prolonged crystal storage in axial magma chambers and instead pointing to rapid crystal growth (up to similar to 10(-8) cm s(-1)) and cooling (up to similar to 1 degrees C h(-1)) shortly prior to eruption of these samples. Growth of these crystals is therefore inferred to occur almost entirely within oceanic layer 2 during dike injection. Crystals that grew at lower crustal levels or earlier in the differentiation sequence appear to have been excluded from the erupted magmas, as might occur if most of the gabbroic rocks in oceanic layer 3 formed an interlocking crystal framework, with viscosities that are too high to carry earlier formed crystals with the melt. The vertical extent of eruptible, crystal-poor melt lenses within the gabbroic zone is constrained to similar to 1 m or less by considering the width of local equilibrium growth zones, equilibration times, and crystal settling velocities. This lengthscale is consistent with field evidence from ophiolites. Finally, crystal aggregates within the Gakkel ridge sample studied here are the result of synneusis within the propagating dike during melt ascent.

    Notes: We report on the development of several operating procedures that promise to make GaAs photoemission electron sources easier to construct, more reliable to operate, and more amenable to use in dynamic vacuum systems. We describe in particular a method for "ohmically'' heating a 〈100〉 crystal of GaAs under vacuum to approximately 600 °C. We also discuss our observations of the role of oxygen in the activation of the crystal surface, the use of continuous cesiation, and of the performance of the crystal under varying vacuum conditions.

    Notes: We describe a magnetic recording media composed of antiferromagnetically coupled (AFC) magnetic recording layers as an approach to extend areal densities of longitudinal media beyond the predicted superparamagnetic limit. The recording medium is made up of two ferromagnetic layers separated by a nonmagnetic layer whose thickness is tuned to couple the layers antiferromagnetically. For such a structure, the effective areal moment density (Mrt) of the composite structure is the difference between the ferromagnetic layers allowing the effective magnetic thickness to scale independently of the physical thickness of the media. Experimental realizations of AFC media demonstrate that thermally stable, low-Mrt media suitable for high-density recording can be achieved. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The involvement of different sets of lymphoid cells in the development of collagen II-induced arthritis in rats was studied by means of immunohistochemical analyses on frozen sections of tissue from joint biopsy specimens taken at different phases of arthritis development. Particular attention was paid to cells involved in early pannus formation. Accumulation of anti-Ia-reactive cells close to the cartilage surface was seen early in the development of pannus, and the anti-Ia reactive cells could in later phases be seen infiltrating cartilage and crowding bone surfaces at sites of marginal erosion. With the help of monoclonal anti-T-cell subset antibodies and rabbit anti-rat immunoglobulin antiserum, it was demonstrated that synovial infiltration of T lymphocytes, particularly W3/25-reactive T “helper” cells, occurs very early in the development of arthritis, whereas a moderate increase of Ox 8-positive ‘suppressor/cytotoxic’ T cells and a small number of B cells and plasma cells are seen later in the course of the disease. Levels of Ia-expressing cells and of T cells belonging lo different subsets were recorded in peripheral blood by means of immunocytochemical analyses on cell smears; no significant deviations from normal levels were seen during the development of arthritis.
