    Notes: We have shown recently that the presence of albumin in astrocytes triggers the synthesis and release of oleic acid, which behaves as a neurotrophic factor for neurons. Thus, oleic acid promotes axonal growth together with the expression of the axonal growth-associated protein, GAP-43. Here we attempted to elucidate whether the neurotrophic effect of oleic acid includes dendritic differentiation. Our results indicate that oleic acid induces the expression of microtubule associated protein-2 (MAP-2), a marker of dendritic differentiation. In addition, the presence of oleic acid promotes the translocation of MAP-2 from the soma to the dendrites. The time course of MAP-2 expression during brain development coincides with that of stearoyl-CoA desaturase, the limiting enzyme of oleic acid synthesis, indicating that both phenomena coincide during development. The effect of oleic acid on MAP-2 expression is most probably independent of autocrine factors synthesized by neurons because this effect was also observed at low cellular densities. As oleic acid is an activator of protein kinase C, the possible participation of this transduction pathway was studied. Our results indicate that added oleic acid or oleic acid endogenously synthesized by astrocytes exerts its neurotrophic effect through a protein kinase C-dependent mechanism as the effect was inhibited by sphingosine or two myristoylated peptide inhibitors of protein kinase C. The transduction pathway by which oleic acid induces the expression of genes responsible for neuronal differentiation appears to be mediated by the transcription factor NeuroD2, a regulator of terminal neuronal differentiation.

    Notes: Abstract We report a field study of the haematocrit of pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) nestlings when close to fledging. First a descriptive study was conducted of both fledgling and adult haematocrit over 2 years to analyse correlates of variation in this trait. Then a swapping experiment was performed to see whether variation among fledglings had a measurable genetic component. Average fledgling haematocrits were lower than those of their male and female parents. Intraclass correlations among sibships in fledgling haematocrit were high in both years, indicating that the estimates of resemblance were inflated, probably by common environmental effects. Fledgling haematocrits were unrelated to date and number of young in the nest. Fledglings with a high haematocrit were heavy and had thick breast muscles. There were no significant relationships between the average fledgling haematocrit and those of the adults caring for them. Nest mite ectoparasites negatively affected fledgling haematocrit. The haematocrits of adults did not differ between sexes or years and in both sexes were unrelated to breeding date, body mass, age, clutch size or number of young reared. Females, but not males, caring for fledglings in nests infested by mites had a lower haematocrit than those rearing young in mite-free nests. The cross-fostering experiment indicated that almost all measured variation in haematocrit was explained by the nest where the bird was reared (67.2% of the explained variance), not by their nest of origin (7.8%), meaning that there was a very small, non-significant resemblance in the haematocrit of genetically related sibs when reared in different environments while unrelated nestlings reared in the same nestbox had similar haematocrits. The low proportion of variance explained by the familial component may be due to the high connection of haematocrit to fitness.

    Notes: Abstract Repetitive monomorphic ventricular tachycardia from the left ventricular outflow tract is an uncommon arrhythmia. Successful catheter ablation has been previously reported in a few cases, but a large number of applications were usually needed when an approach based on either activation mapping or pace mapping was used. In our patient, the selection of the target point for application was based exclusively on unipolar mapping criteria of the ectopic beats, resulting in a short procedure with successful outcome.

    Notes: Abstract We manipulated parental work load without changing brood size in a population of pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca by removing two primaries (7 and 9) from each wing of females, thus reducing wing area and increasing flight costs. At other nests, we offered supplementary food in the form of live mealworms (10–20 g daily from hatching) to reduce brood demand and thus parental foraging costs. Other nests were left as controls. The daily energy expenditure of females feeding 12-day-old nestlings was measured with doubly labelled water D2 18O. Females in both treatments expended the same amount of energy, fed at the same rate and had similar body masses to birds in the control group. No effect of treatment on male mass and feeding effort was detected. More nestlings, however, died in nests of handicapped females. Nestlings of handicapped females had significantly lower body mass and haematocrit values than nestlings in food-supplemented nests, with nestlings in control nests occupying an intermediate position. The effects of both treatments on nestling mass, haematocrit values and mortality rates were only noticeable in nests infested with mites. Maternal energy expenditure is apparently constrained and offspring pay the costs imposed by reduced provisioning rate or increased demand caused by ectoparasites, while receiving benefits when food supply improves. The presumption that avian reproductive costs derive from changes in a flexible energy output may not be met in many cases.

    Notes: Abstract. In patients unable to perform a maximal exercise test, dipyridamole single-photon emission tomography (SPET) has a higher capacity than exercise SPET to detect coronary artery disease (CAD). However, in patients with myocardial ischaemia who are able to perform a maximal exercise test, it is not known whether these two tests may be equally used to assess the areas of myocardial ischaemia. This study was aimed at comparing the results provided by dipyridamole and exercise SPET in CAD patients with documented exercise myocardial ischaemia. Forty CAD patients who had undergone exercise thallium-201 SPET and who had myocardial ischaemia documented by an unequivocally positive exercise test underwent an additional 201Tl SPET study after dipyridamole infusion and low-level (40 W) exercise. The extent of defects was compared between the two tests and predictors of discrepant results were sought among data from exercise testing and coronary angiography. The extent of SPET defects was equivalent between the two tests in only 11 patients (28%), larger defects being observed with exercise in 18 [average difference: 12%±5% of left ventricle (LV)] and with dipyridamole in 11 (average difference: 15%±11% of LV). The best independent predictors of discrepancies between the two tests were: (1) increase in heart rate at exercise SPET, with defects being smaller at exercise than after dipyridamole in none of the patients with an increase 〉60 bpm (0/14), but in 42% of the others (11/26; P=0.004); and (2) an ischaemic territory related to a 〈70% coronary stenosis, for which SPET defects were always induced at exercise (10/10) but in only 30% (3/10) with dipyridamole (P=0.0004). Exercise and dipyridamole SPET provide different estimates of myocardial ischaemic areas. Dipyridamole allows the unmasking of perfusion abnormalities in patients who have low increases in heart rate at exercise SPET. However, dipyridamole is also much less efficient at inducing perfusion abnormalities in the ischaemic areas supplied by coronary stenoses of intermediate severity at rest angiography.

    Notes: The permanganate oxidation of L-valine has been studied by visible spectrophotometry in neutral aqueous solutions. Under these conditions, both the zwitterionic and anionic forms of the amino acid are oxidized, the reaction being autocatalyzed by soluble colloidal manganese dioxide. Kinetic data for both the uncatalyzed and autocatalytic reaction pathways have been obtained, and reaction sequences consistent with the experimental findings are proposed.

    Description: We hereby present experimental and theoretical insights on the use of biomineralized magnetite nanoparticles, called magnetosomes, as heat nanoinductors in the magnetic hyperthermia technique. The heating efficiency or specific absorption rate of magnetosomes extracted from Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense bacteria and immersed in water and agarose gel, was directly determined from the hysteresis loops obtained at different frequencies and magnetic field amplitudes. We demonstrate that heat production of magnetosomes can be predicted in the framework of the Stoner−Wohlfarth theory of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy subjected to significant dipolar interactions, which can be described in terms of an interaction anisotropy superimposed to that of each particle. Based on these findings, we propose optimal magnetic field amplitude and frequency values in order to maximize the heat production while keeping the undesired eddy current effects below safe and tolerable limits. The efficiency of magnetosomes as heat generators and their impact on cell viability has been checked in macrophage cells. Our results clearly indicate that the hyperthermia treatment causes both cell death and inhibition of cell proliferation. Specifically, only 36% of the treated macrophages remained alive 2 h after alternating magnetic field exposure, and 24 h later the percentage fell to 22%.

    Description: The overall goal of this report is to analyse the EuroSea itinerant exhibition as a case study of public engagement activity. Aimed at the general public, this modular and itinerant exhibition raises awareness about the EuroSea project while also promoting ocean literacy and highlighting the importance of ocean observing and forecasting. Public engagement plays a crucial role in Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation funding program. It aims to bridge the gap between researchers and society, ensuring that their work is aligned with societal needs and values. This involves bringing together various stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, civil society organizations, NGOs, and citizens, to foster inclusive and transparent dialogue. The benefits of public engagement are evident in the research and innovation process. It stimulates creativity and innovation, brings ocean science to a broader audience, builds trust and credibility and promotes ocean literacy and empowerment among citizens. Within Horizon 2020, the EuroSea Communication Work Package 8 focuses on public engagement activities related to ocean observing and forecasting, among other activities. To raise awareness about the EuroSea project and ocean observation, the EuroSea itinerant exhibition was created. This exhibition features printed panels, audiovisuals, and a photobooth that could be adapted and translated for different locations. The exhibition has been presented at 8 events and locations across Europe, aiming to engage the general public, promote ocean literacy, and emphasize the importance of ocean observation and forecasting. This report specifically focuses on three events targeted to the general public where the EuroSea exhibition was showcased: 1) 2022 European Researcher’s Night. 2022, September 30th in Palma (Mallorca, Spain); 2) 25th Galway Science & Technology Festival. 2022, November 13th in Galway (Ireland); and 3) 10th ‘Science for all’. 2023, May 11-13th in Palma (Mallorca, Spain). To evaluate the impact of the EuroSea exhibition, an online survey was conducted. The survey assessed visitor satisfaction, knowledge acquisition, interest in the topic, prior knowledge of EuroSea and ocean observation, and preferences for future engagement activities. A total of 41 people participated in the survey. The main results obtained from the analysis of the data demonstrate an overall positive satisfaction with the exhibition and a high level of interest in the topic. Participants reported acquiring new knowledge and expressed a desire for future engagement activities. Additionally, the survey provided valuable demographic insights into the participants, including their age, gender, employment status, educational background, and frequency of engagement in ocean science outreach activities. The findings from the survey will contribute to the improvement of future public engagement activities by better understanding the needs and interests of the public regarding ocean observation and forecasting. This document emphasizes the significance of public engagement in research and innovation, specifically within the EuroSea project. The EuroSea itinerant exhibition was developed to raise awareness and promote ocean literacy, while the survey conducted during the exhibition provided valuable insights into participant satisfaction and preferences. This information will be instrumental in enhancing future engagement efforts.
