    Notes: The efficacy and tolerability of intranasal azelastine (0.14 mg/nostril twice daily) and oral terfenadine (60 mg twice daily) were compared under double-blind conditions in two 6-week, multicenter, parallel-group studies, including 167 patients suffering from seasonal and 52 patients suffering from perennial allergic rhinitis. In both studies, patients were symptomatic on entry and showed significant improvement on both treatments within the first 8 d of therapy, showing little further improvement with continued treatment. Symptoms most pronounced on entry – nasal itching, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and nasal obstruction – responded best to treatment (response rates 80–90%). Objective signs such as mucosal swelling and conjunctivitis improved in a manner parallel to symptoms. In perennial rhinitis, azelastine showed a trend to a superior relief of rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction, whereas terfenadine showed a trend toward better control of sneezing and nasal itchiness. No clinically relevant or statistically significant differences between treatments could be identified. The incidence of adverse effects of possible causal relationship to therapy was low. The most frequent effects in azelastine-treated patients were related to application site disorders, e.g., nasal irritation. Results indicate that with the dose used azelastine nasal spray is an effective treatment for both seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

    Notes: Abstract The interference of Mößbauer scattering and Rayleigh scattering was examined and it was found that this interference can be easily observed on certain conditions. The experiment was initially carried out with a single-line transition of the 14 keV energy level of Fe57. From the experimental data the contribution of Rayleigh scattering could be determined relative to Mößbauer scattering and it could be shown that by measuring the interference of Mößbauer scattering and Rayleigh scattering one will have a sensitive detector for Rayleigh scattering. This was used to test the spin dependence of Rayleigh scattering. For this purpose, a similar experiment was carried out with circularly polarizedγ-quanta and polarized electrons, making use of the splitting of the Fe57 hyperfine structure. By comparison of the measured values for left-handed and right-handed circularly polarized components a strong spin dependence of the Rayleigh scattering was found.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Purpose: The standards and regulations concerning the protection of patients and operator staff within the context of MRI are compiled. Resulting consequences regarding physical parameters are evaluated. Material and methods: The static magnetic field, heating effects caused by RF-fields and acoustical noise are outlined. The actual boundaries of these parameters are compared against the relevant published standards. Peripheral stimulation limits due to pulsed gradient fields have been determined in a new clinical study. Results: Many parameters recommended for the normal operating mode are already exceeded during routine MRI. Referring to our clinical study, we found that limits recommended in the MRI relevant standards are unnecessarily conservative and can actually be doubled. Conclusions: The applicable national and international standards and regulations show (at least partly) that serious differences in the definition of terms and values exist. The application of these standards would be much easier if they were made uniform. The values defined in the MR-specific standards should be adapted to actual knowledge concerning patients’ safety.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Zielsetzung: Die in der MRT für den Schutz von Patienten und Anwender gültigen Normen und Vorschriften werden zusammengestellt. Die daraus resultierenden Auswirkungen auf die physikalischen Parameter bei der Bildgebung durch MRT werden beurteilt. Material und Methodik: Die Aspekte statisches Magnetfeld, Hochfrequenzerwärmung und Lärm werden dargestellt und die dafür derzeit gültigen Begrenzungen mit dem Stand von Wissenschaft und Technik verglichen. In einer klinischen Prüfung wurden Stimulationschwellen durch gepulste Gradientenfelder bestimmt. Ergebnisse: Viele für den Normalbetrieb empfohlene Parameter werden heute bereits in der Routinebildgebung überschritten. Anhand der klinischen Prüfung wird nachgewiesen, daß die Patientensicherheit in bezug auf periphere Stimulationen auch bei Betriebsparametern, die über das Doppelte der empfohlenen Werte hinausgehen, gewährleistet ist. Schlußfolgerungen: Die anzuwendenden nationalen und internationalen Regeln weisen z.T. gravierende Unterschiede bei den Begriffsdefinitionen und den Zahlenwerten auf. Eine Harmonisierung würde ihre Umsetzung wesentlich vereinfachen. Die in den MR-spezifischen Standards geregelten Werte sollten dem aktuellen Kenntnisstand angepaßt (erhöht) werden.

    Notes: Abstract The low-friction region of an anharmonically bound Brownian particle is examined using systematic elimination procedures. We obtain an asymptotic expression for the spectrum of the Fokker-Planck operator. Asymptotic means both small anharmonicities and small friction constants γ compared to the oscillatory frequency ω. We conclude that Kramers' low-friction equation is generally valid only for 0〈γ≲0.01 ω and has to be modified for γ≳0.01 ω by including phase-dependent terms. From these the nonlinear part of the force field in connection with a finite temperature is shown to shorten the correlation time of the equilibrium velocity autocorrelation function and to renormalize the frequency of the corresponding spectral density.

    Description / Table of Contents: Studies of Nitrogen Iodine Compounds. IX. Preparation and I. R. Investigations of Iodine Complexes of N-Iodine Methylamines[CH3NI2]2 · I2, [(CH3)2NI]2 · I2 and (CH3)2NI · I2, have been prepared. The IR-spectra have been obtained in the region 33-4000 cm-1. The spectra can be coordinated on the ground of a molecule model with 5 atoms Z2XYW of the symmetry Cs and are compared to that of CH3NI2. The structures of the compounds are proposed to be monomolecular.
    Notes: [CH3NJ2]2 · J2, [(CH3)2NJ]2 · J2 und (CH3)2NJ · J2 wurden dargestellt und IR-spektroskopisch im Bereich von 33-4000 cm-1 untersucht. Die Spektren können unter Annahme einer Cs-Symmetrie vom Typ Z2XYW interpretiert und mit dem von CH3NJ2 verglichen werden. Strukturvorschläge, die von einem monomolekularen Aufbau ausgehen, werden zur Diskussion gestellt.

Preparation and infrared studies on N-iodomethylaminesN-diiodomethylamine and N-iododimethylamine can both be prepared under special conditions only. N-diiodomethylamine forms solid adducts with methylamine, trimethylamine and pyridine. The diodomethylamines show IR spectra similar to those shown by (NI3 · NH3)n and demonstrating an analogous polymeric structure; iododimethylamine according to its spectrum is thought to be a monomeric substance.
    Notes: N-Dijodmethylamin und N-Joddimethylamin sind nur unter besonderen Reaktionsbedingungen rein herzustellen. N-Dijodmethylamin bildet feste Addukte mit Methylamin, Trimethylamin und Pyridin. Die IR-spektroskopische Untersuchung liefert Spektren, die mit denen des (NJ3 · NH3)n zu vergleichen sind und für einen entsprechenden polymeren Aufbau der Dijodmethylamine sprechen; N-Joddimethylamin ist auf Grund seines Spektrums dagegen als monomer anzusehen.
