    Notes: Abstract: The dipole modes of non-parabolic quantum dots are studied by means of their current and density patterns as well as with their local absorption distribution. The anticrossing of the so-called Bernstein modes originates from the coupling with electron-hole excitations of the two Landau bands which are occupied at the corresponding magnetic fields. Non-quadratic terms in the potential cause an energy separation between bulk and edge current modes in the anticrossing region. On a local scale the fragmented peaks absorb energy in complementary spatial regions which evolve with the magnetic field.

    Notes: Abstract: The magnetic dipole (M1) and electric quadupole (E2) responses of two-dimensional quantum dots with an elliptic shape are theoretically investigated as a function of the dot deformation and applied static magnetic field. Neglecting the electron-electron interaction we obtain analytical results which indicate the existence of four characteristic modes, with different B-dispersion of their energies and associated strengths. Interaction effects are numerically studied within the time-dependent local-spin-density and Hartree approximations, assessing the validity of the non-interacting picture.

    Notes: Abstract. The influence of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling on the electron spin dynamics is investigated for a ballistic semiconductor quantum wire with a finite width. We monitor the spin evolution using the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The pure spin precession characteristic of the 1D limit is lost in a 2D wire with a finite lateral width. In general, the time evolution in the latter case is characterized by several frequencies and a nonrigid spin motion.

    Notes: Summary Previous reports have shown that deficient galactosylation of serum IgG occurs in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other autoimmune disorders. In this study, we investigated the relationship between galactosylation of serum IgG and disease status in a population of Pima and Papago Indians, who are characterized by a frequent occurrence of RA. The mean galactose levels of serum IgG collected from 11 individuals 1.5–10 years prior to onset (T1), at onset (T2), and 1.7–7 years post-onset (T3) of RA were lower than those from 25 seronegative controls without RA from the same population (P=0.01, 0.005, and ≦0.001, respectively). The mean galactose content of IgG decreased in the order T1〉T2〉T3, but the differences were not significant. The galactosylation of serum IgG from the RA patients did not differ from that of seropositive Pima Indian controls who did not develop RA over the course of study. The occurrence of IgG galactose deficiency in individuals with RA prior to the onset of the disease supports the contention that this phenomenon may be a risk factor for the development of RA. Furthermore, the occurrence of IgG galactose deficiency in healthy seropositive individuals suggests a relationship between diminished galactosylation and induction of rheumatoid factor (RF).

    Notes: Abstract Osteoporosis that develops during immobli-zation is a severe condition that confers increased risk of fractures with their burden of mortality and disability. The aim of this study was to investigate the determinants of immobilization osteoporosis. As a model of this condition we studied hemiplegic subjects, measuring bone mineral density in the paralyzed lower limb as compared with the non-paralyzed one. In spite of the limits related to the loss of nervous stimulation, this model offers the advantage of a proper control for the complex genetic and environmental cofactors involved. We examined 48 hemiplegic subjects (31 men, 17 women in menopause) admitted consecutively over a 9-month period. Mean length of immobilization was 10.9 months for men (range 1–48 months) and 7.8 months for women (range 1–40 months). The average time since menopause was 14.9 years (range 1.7–23.9 years). For each subject the following were performed: questionnaire, medical examination, anthropometric measurements, evaluation of the scores for spasticity and for lower limb motor capacity in order to account for the different degrees of disability among patients. Bone mineral density was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at both femoral necks. For each patient we defined a percentage difference in bone loss between the paralyzed and non-paralyzed limb. Regression coefficient were calculated by multiple logistic regression. There was significant bone loss in the paralyzed limb in both sexes, accounting for up to 6.3% in women. Multiple regression analysis showed that the degree of bone loss depends significantly and directly on the length of immobilization, even when controlling for age and sex in the regression model (R=0.193,p=0.034). However, when time since menopause was included in the regression model, with length of immobility as a covariate, it was the only significant determinant of bone loss (R=0.312,p=0.039). No additional factors were observed among men. No differences were shown with regard to anthropometric measurements or functional scores. Length of immobilization accounts only for a small fraction of bone loss, which does not exceed 5% of the total variance. Our data show that postmenopausal women should be considered at highest risk for osteoporosis in cases of immobility and that different factors, other than length of immobility, might come into play in determining bone loss in this condition.

    Notes: Summary Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a skeletal disease characterized by ligamentous ossification of the anterolateral side of the spine. The radiographs of the spine of 69 patients (22 males, 47 females, mean age 64.97±8.83 years) affected by DISH according to Resnick's criteria were selected. A lower rate of lumbar spine involvement (71%) and a different distribution between sexes were demonstrated, as compared to the data from the literature. Data on relationships among extent of hyperostosis, occupation and metabolic disorders suggest that an important role might be played by the exposure to microtrauma, while, in subjects affected by a metabolic disorder, this condition would represent a prevalent pathogenetic factor. These data underline some peculiarities in the clinical picture of DISH in the population from Campania, that could depend on genetic factors.

    Notes: Abstract. The level splittings induced by a horizontal magnetic field in a parabolic two-dimensional quantum dot with spin-orbit interaction are obtained. Characteristic features induced by the spin-orbit coupling are the appearance of zero-field gaps as well as energy splittings that depend on the electronic state and the orientation of the magnetic field in the quantum-dot plane.     Notes: Abstract The Schrödinger (as opposed to the Cooper or BCS-gap) equation is solved without approximation in momentum space for the BCS interaction model to obtain the quantum bound-state spectrum of an isolated pair of fermions in one, two, and three dimensions. Regardless of dimensionality, there is never more than a single bound state (in analogy with the nucleon-nucleon interaction), but a threshold value of the potential strength is needed to support this state in any dimension. For very low densities one recovers previously known formulas for two and three dimensions which are consistent in this limit with the more familiar properties of quantum binding for simple, purely attractive wells. Results are illustrated for typical conventional, cuprate, and superconducting semiconductors having controversially low carrier densities.
