    Description: The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) is an Italian research institution with focus on earth sciences. Moreover, the INGV is the operational center for seismic surveillance and earthquake monitoring in Italy and is a part of the civil protection system as a center of expertise on seismic, volcanic, and tsunami risks.INGV operates the Italian National Seismic Network and other networks at national scale and is a primary node of the European Integrated Data Archive for archiving and distributing strong‐motion and weak‐motion seismic recordings. In the control room in Rome, INGV staff performs seismic surveillance and tsunami warning services; in Catania and Naples, the control rooms are devoted to volcanic surveillance. Volcano monitoring includes locating earthquakes in the regions around the Sicilian (Etna, Eolian Islands, and Pantelleria) and the Campanian (Vesuvius, Campi Fregrei, and Ischia) active volcanoes. The tsunami warning is based on earthquake location and magnitude (M) evaluation for moderate to large events in the Mediterranean region and also around the world. The technologists of the institute tuned the data acquisition system to accomplish, in near real time, automatic earthquake detection, hypocenter and magnitude determination, and evaluation of several seismological products (e.g., moment tensors and ShakeMaps). Database archiving of all parametric results is closely linked to the existing procedures of the INGV seismic surveillance environment and surveillance procedures. Earthquake information is routinely revised by the analysts of the Italian seismic bulletin. INGV provides earthquake information to the Department of Civil Protection (Dipartimento di Protezione Civile) to the scientific community and to the public through the web and social media. We aim at illustrating different aspects of earthquake monitoring at INGV: (1) network operations; (2) organizational structure and the hardware and software used; and (3) communication, including recent developments and planned improvements.

    Description: Nella Struttura Terremoti dell’INGV la Linea di Attività T5 “Sorveglianza sismica ed operatività postterremoto” si occupa delle attività di sviluppo di strumenti e procedure per la valutazione in tempo reale degli effetti di terremoti e tsunami e della gestione delle emergenze sismiche. Uno dei suoi obiettivi del 2015 era la formalizzazione dei protocolli di intervento di Gruppi d’Emergenza, avvenuta per Emergeo, Emersito, IES, QUEST e Sismiko con Decreto del Presidente nel luglio 2015. Altro obiettivo era l’elaborazione di un Protocollo di Ente per la gestione delle emergenze sismiche. La bozza preparata nel 2015 prevede l’importante novità dell’Unità di Crisi, mai formalizzata in precedenza. Attraverso questo Protocollo di Ente si auspica di migliorare la risposta logistico-operativa dell’INGV durante l’emergenza, di avere una più rapida conoscenza del fenomeno in corso e di realizzare un’efficace comunicazione verso Protezione Civile, media e pubblico. Per verificare il tutto è stata organizzata un’esercitazione in cui è stato simulato un terremoto di magnitudo 6.4 nel basso Lazio. Si sono così sperimentate l’efficacia del flusso azioni/informazioni durante un’emergenza, il funzionamento dell’Unità di Crisi, la funzionalità dei protocolli dei Gruppi d’Emergenza, l’efficienza delle attività in sede per gli aspetti tecnico-logistici, il flusso di comunicazione interno e le comunicazioni istituzionali esterne (queste ultime simulate). In questo articolo sono descritte le fasi di organizzazione ed attuazione dell’esercitazione. Inoltre, durante il suo svolgimento, la valutazione dell’efficacia dell’organizzazione e delle attività svolte dai gruppi coinvolti è stata affidata ad alcuni osservatori e qui è allegata l’elaborazione dei commenti riportati. Abbiamo fatto infine una sintesi dei risultati positivi e delle criticità emerse dall’esercitazione, attività così importante a nostro avviso da considerarne indispensabile la ripetizione con cadenza quanto meno annuale.

    Description: In 2015, the Seismic Hazard Centre (CPS) of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) was commissioned to engage and coordinate the national community with the aim of elaborating a new reference seismic hazard model, which is expected to be released in mid 2018. CPS outlined a roadmap to describe the main features of this complex endeavour, including the different scientific tasks, milestones and timelines. The scientific tasks focus their work on i) improving the quality and the accuracy of the input data (e.g. historical seismic catalogue, seismotectonic zonation, etc.); ii) building new earthquake rate models based on these new input data, iii) selecting the most proper ground motion prediction equations, iv) testing the overall seismic hazard model as well as each component; v) combining the results of the statistical testing phase and the outcome of an expert's elicitation session to assign a weight to each component of the final seismic hazard model. The new seismic hazard model is based on an innovative coherent probabilistic framework, which allows a proper description of the aleatory variability and epistemic uncertainty, and the validation of the seismic hazard model. Here, we describe the progresses made up to now, the comparison between the new and the official national model, and finally we discuss the scientific aspects that have the most significant impact on the new picture of PSHA in Italy.

    Description: In this paper, we describes the role of the INGVterremoti blog in information management during the first part of the earthquake sequence in Central Italy (August 24-September 30). In the last four years, we have been working on the INGVterremoti blog in order to provide quick updates on the ongoing seismic activity in Italy and in-depth scientific information. These include articles on specific historical earthquakes, seismic hazard, geological interpretations, source models from different types of data, effects at the surface, and so on. We have delivered information in quasi-real-time also about all the recent magnitude M≥4.0 earthquakes in Italy, as well as on the strongest events that occurred in the Mediterranean and in the world. During the 2016, central Italy earthquake sequence, the INGVterremoti blog has continuously released information with three types of posts: i) updates on the ongoing seismic activity; ii) reports on the activities carried out by the INGV teams in the field and by other working groups; iii) in-depth scientific articles describing some specific analysis and results. All the blog posts have been shared automatically and in real time on the other social media of the INGVterremoti platform, also to counter the bad information, and to fight rumors. These include Facebook, Twitter and the INGVterremoti App on IOS and Android. As well, both the main INGV home page (www.ingv.it) and the INGV earthquake portal (http://terremoti.ingv.it) have published the contents of the blog on dedicated pages that were fed automatically. The work done day by day on the INGVterremoti blog has been coordinated with the INGV Press Office that has written several press releases based on the contents of the blog. Since August 24th, 53 articles were published on the blog, and they have had more than 1.9 million views and 1 million visitors. The peak in the number of views, which was more than 800,000 in a single day, was registered on August 24, 2016, following the M 6.0 earthquake.

    Description: The Italian reference seismic hazard model was released in 2004, but it has been adopted for the definition of seismic zones in 2006 and for building code only in 2009. At the beginning of 2015 the Seismic Hazard Center (CPS) of INGV was commissioned to coordinate the national scientific community with the aim of elaborating a new reference seismic hazard model, mainly finalized to the update of seismic code. The CPS designed a roadmap to release within 2 years a significantly renewed model, with regard both to the updated input elements and to the strategies to follow, in order to obtain a shared and largely accepted PSHA. The main requirements of the model were discussed in meetings with the experts on earthquake engineering. A public call was opened according to a transparent procedure; we received 24 proposals from many national institutions. The activities were organized in 6 tasks: project coordination, input data, seismicity models, ground motion prediction equations, computation and rendering, validation. In the first phase, the working groups of each task worked separately; in the second phase of the project they collaborated to release a final model. During the project, many scientific aspects were carefully considered, as in many other seismic hazard projects: the use of a declustered catalogue versus a non declustered one, the adoption of the logic-tree approach instead of an ensemble modeling, the definition of objective strategies to assign the weight to each single model, and so on.

    Description: The geothermal resource exploration generally requires a combined analysis of various geo-information datasets. In this framework the geospatial analysis as the weighted overlay, performed under GIS (Geographic Information Systems) environment, represent a strong tool to solve problems such as the site selection. This technique is applied on not homogeneous input data to perform an integrated analysis and producing favourability maps. This work is based on the development of a new weighted overlay scheme, that combines favourable geological factors, which allow the identification of hydrothermal geothermal resources, and geological hazards (seismicity and volcanism), which can potentially limit the exploitation of a geothermal resource. The technique was tested on Tuscany Region (Italy), where two geothermal fields, Larderello-Travale/Radicondoli and Monte Amiata, are in operation. Results show that the most promising areas mostly coincide with the exploited geothermal fields. Moreover, new areas with a high geothermal favourability are identified. Low-cost and rapid resource evaluation approaches like this could play a key role during the early stages of a geothermal exploration plan. Moreover, this methodology could be extensively used in other geothermal areas not only by the scientific community but also by stakeholders, as first concrete tool to explore a potential resource suitable for exploitation.
