Description: Spring blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense in the Argentine sea produce shellfish toxicity through the parallytic shellfish poison (PSP)accumulation. The trace PSP content in the mackerel Scomber japonicus liver was previously demonstrated in the Buenos Aires province coastal region (Carreto et al, 1993a),and a certain capability to accumulate the toxins was suggested. However, it was up to spring 1993 when a great number of PSP intoxicated mackerels where detected for the first time in a wideshelf area off the Buenos Aires province. This area, known as 'El Rincón' (39°00'-40°30'S), has become a growing importance mackerel fishing ground during the last few years. A high PSP concentration was determined in those mackerels, being the maximum located in the stomach content (2800 ugSTXeq/100g). It was predominantly composed of gelatinous zooplankton and a high concentration of A. tamarence cells indicating a probable way for the toxins transference. The mackerels mortality area corresponded with the A. tamarense maximum concentration in the Buenos Aires province coastal region, where a widespread water discoloration was produced.

Description: Bluemouth (Helicolenus dactylopterus), a benthic fish mostly inhabiting at depths between 500 m and 600 m, represents a highly valuable economic resource for local fishermen at the Azores Islands (NE Atlantic). Nominal catches of bluemouth increased from 1990 through 1994, and declined afterwards reaching in 1999 the lowest value recorded. Standardized catch per unit effort (CPUE) was used as an index for stock relative abundance; a General Linear Model, considering several factors that may have affected the fishing efficiency of commercial vessels, was run to obtain this CPUE index. These factors were: fleet type, year, month, and boat size; the last three factors were found to be statistically significant. A discrete version of the Schaefers Biomass Dynamic Model was applied to the bluemouth stock assessment and the model parameters were estimated using the standardised CPUE series for calibration. A risk analysis using Monte Carlo simulations was carried out to estimate the probability of the stock biomass at the beginning of 2003 to be below the stock biomass at the beginning of 2002, after a given catch was extracted. Assuming a precautionary approach and keeping in mind that this resource could be depleted (0.19〈 B2002 /Bopt 〈1.55, with a 95% probability), this analysis determined that catches for the year 2003 should not exceed 250 t, which correspond to a 10% probability of generating a biomass decline at the beginning of 2003. As an additional indicator of the state of the resource, the size distribution of bluemouth landings was analyzed complementary. This analysis showed a decrease of the mean length, mainly for catches coming from regions with the highest concentrations (depths greater than 300 m). Future annual monitoring efforts to estimate and diagnose the state of the bluemouth resource are highly recommended.

Description: The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) from the NW Mediterranean, along the Catalan coast (Spain), were estimated. These results constitute the first estimated values for chub mackerel in this area and were as follows: L∞(cm) = 39.75; K (years-1) = 0.298; t0 (years) = -1.40 (for age groups 0 to 8). These results were compared with the estimated growth parameters for the chub mackerel that inhabits other two regions: NE Atlantic (Azores) and SW Atlantic (Argentina). Significant differences in growth curves between regions were found when the growth parameters, L∞, K and t0, were simultaneously compared. When comparing the growth parameters L~! and K individually, significant differences between regions were also verified. To establish the causes in the geographical variations in the growth, some local environmental factors were analyzed, in particular, the effect of surface water on the index of physiological activity of fish (K). The observed geographical differences indicate that chub mackerel from higher latitudes reach a lower asymptotic length but have a higher K than chub mackerel from lower latitudes. No direct relationship could be established between K and the average annual water temperature in the different regions of their world distribution. On the other hand, food resource quality and availability appears to have a greater influence on growth in chub mackerel.

Description: Movements pattern records of the Mar del Plata inshore fishing fleet during the 1997/98 and 1998/99 chub mackerel fishing seasons (October-January) allowed to observe that there is coincidence between the decrease of the 1983-1997 catches with respect to years previous to the 1975/76 "critical season" and a reduction of the inshore fleet fishing grounds which modifies accessibility of the fleet to the chub mackerel schools. Biostatistical and gonadal development results obtained in the Mar del Plata area (i.e., presence of adults during almost the whole fishing season which overlaps with the spawning season) do not differ significantly from those obtained during previous fishing seasons. As recommended in previous papers, chub mackerel fishing operations should not be carried out when sea surface temperatures reach 19°C. The opening of a new fishing ground ("El Rincón") for regular chub mackerel catches, mainly during August, decreases the marketing possibilities of the Mar del Plata chub mackerel inshore fishing fleet which operates later on (October-January). Therefore, it is suggested that a fishing quota be applied to said fleet.

Description: The pre-stratified design hitherto used to evaluate the winter biomass of the main coastal demersal species within the Aragentine - Uruguay Common Fishing Zone is reviewed. That design involved 21 strata. A new criterion to build strata is proposed, and the winter biomass of white croaker estimated 24,595 t ± 46.55 o/o by new criterian (6 strata). A further post-estratification method was performed to identify the main areas of commercial fishing, and their corresponding size structure of croaker. According to this procedure, the biomass was evaluated to be about 19,719 t ± 22.09 o/o. The new survey design reduced the total area to be covered by 24 o/o. Therefore, it allows for increasing sampling effort withing the most important areas of coastal fish distribution.

Description: Chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) landings corresponding to November 2003-January 2004 and November 2004-January 2005 fishing seasons were analyzed at the Mar del Plata port (Argentina, SW Atlantic). Fourty one samples were taken to measure total length exclusively and 4 sub-samples to record individual data (total length, weight, sex, sexual stage, age according to otoliths reading). Total length ranged 20-50 cm (1 and 8 years old). The most abundant sizes, between 32-37 cm, corresponded to ages 3 and 4, respectively. Most of the fish caught were adult (95%) and mature (85%) specimens. Length-weight, length-age relations were calculated and length-growth, weight-growth parameters estimated. The catch per unit of effort, of high variability (0-2,455 kg h-1), decreased as sea surface temperature increased. To estimate the species biomass in the fishing area a research cruise was carried out between 17-20 December 2004. Measurements, obtained with acoustic methods, reached a total of 11,678 t. The highest concentrations were found at a temperature of around 17.4 ºC and salinity of 33.62 psu. During the acoustic tracking, unusual concentrations of anchovy for the season were detected.

Description: Brazilian flathead (Percophis brasiliensis), of wide latitudinal distribution (23° S-47° S), is caught in Argentina in two coastal areas north and south of the Province of Buenos Aires delimited by the 39° S latitude. The species shows the highest abundance and catch yield percentages ( 5. ) of all coastal fish groups. The importance of the species makes it necessary to analyze mean lengths and define an annual abundance index that would allow to diagnose the state of the stock. To calculate the index the General Linear Model was adjusted. The factors used were Year, Quarter and 4 sub-areas, all statistically significant. The problem generated by the presence in the model of first order interactions that include the Year factor is discussed. It is concluded that the catch per unit of effort series did not represent changes in the resource abundance. Results suggest that caution should be taken when using the values normally considered to diagnose the state of the stock and implement management measures. Based on catch and effort values, the most important sub-areas were the mouth of the Río de la Plata river (1) and the Mar del Plata adjacent areas (3). A decreasing trend of the mean length throughout the study period was also observed.
