Abstract: Summary The AA. mention the principles on which the stratigraphy with the technic of 1930 and 1947 are based and briefly describe their history and technical modality of execution. After an examination of the literature on its application by researches of the skull and brain, it must be concluded that in this field the method has not yet reached the actual diffusion already achieved by explorations of the thorax. This limitation, chiefly due to technical reasons, is about to disappear, owing to the new apparatus which are endowed with those improvements necessary for facilitating researches. At the end some stratigrams are presented which show the possibility of bringing invisible normal and pathologic formations into evidence by standard researches during gaseous examinations of the ventricles, be it in regard to the cranial skeleton or to the brain.

Notes: Summary We have compared the long-term effects of different corticosteroids on glucose metabolism by carring out a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test in 27 subjects before and after the administration of deflazacort or betamethasone for two months in random balanced sequence. Fasting plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were significantly higher after betamethasone, whereas deflazacort increased only fasting plasma insulin. After oral glucose there were significant increases in blood glucose and insulin after betamethasone compared with deflazacort. These results suggest that the degree of glucose intolerance and insulin resistance depends on the steroid used and on the dose given, although long-term treatment with deflazacort has a smaller effect on glucose metabolism than betamethasone.

Notes: Abstract Electric monopole transitions between the 0 2 + , 0 1 + and 2 2 + , 2 1 + levels in76Se, populated in the decay of76Br, were investigated by means of conversion electrons and gammaray spectroscopy. TheK-electron intensity ratios ofE0 andE2 transitions connecting the 0 2 + level to the 0 1 + and 2 1 + levels and of theE0 andE2 components in the 2 2 + →2 1 + transition were determined. The ratioX(E0/E2) of theE0 toE2 reduced transition probabilities and, from the available lifetimes, theE0 strength parameters ρ(E0) were deduced for the two transitions. The results are compared with the predictions of current models.

Notes: Abstract Penetration effects in the conversion process of the 7/2+→5/2+, 171 keV and 5/2+→1/2+, 245 keV transitions in111Cd have been investigated. The decay of111In has been studied to deduce the relative intensity of theK-conversion lines IK(171)/IK(245) and the ratioI K(245)/I L+M... (245). The values obtained for the penetration parameters of the two transitions are 0≦λ(171)≦2.3 and −0.4≦λ 1(245)≦1.9.

Notes: By aid of lipases, e.g. of Mucor michei, in n-hexane wax esters were produced from usual primary fatty alcohols and unusual hydroxy fatty acids (in part of microbial origin). Thus, (S)-17-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid dodecyl ester and (R)-3-hydroxy decanoic acid dodecyl ester were formed. In measurements of the film pressure using a LANGMUIR film balance the monolayers of both compounds indicated good stability compared to the non-hydroxy wax esters. Glycolipids de novo produced by microorganisms did not show suitable wetting properties, but they were able to lower ze surface tension of water to a higher extent than the unusual waxes.

Description: Cellbound and extracellular biosurfactants were detected by thin-layer chromatography, tensiometric measurements, blood agar lysis and their capability of stabilizing oil in water emulsions. Known trehalose lipids (RAPP et al. 1979, RISTAU et al. 1983) and one glucose lipid, formerly unknown, with excellent properties were isolated. Also emulsifying agents were found. They seemed to be high molecular weight substances. Mixtures of hydrocarbons containing aliphatics and aromatics were efficiently emulsified. Reduced activity after digestion by several proteases gives a first indication of the nature of the emulsifiers. Preliminary results with several marine microorganisms showed that most biogenic surfactants possess a good environmental compatibility (v. BERNEM 1984, LANG et al. 1986).

Description: During a screening for biosurfactants among marine microorganisms it was possible to isolate two marine bacteria producing glycolipids. One strain was identified as Arthrobacter sp. EK l which produced trehalose lipids, mainly a 2,3,4,2'-trehalose tetraester. From the other pure culture identified as Alcaligenes sp. MM l a new glucose lipid was isolated.

Description: The very high fluences (e.g. up to 2×10 16 1 MeV n eq /cm 2 ) and total ionising doses (TID) of the order of 1 Grad, expected at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), impose new challenges for the design of effective, radiation resistant detectors. Ionising energy loss is the dominant effect for what concerns SiO 2 and SiO 2 /Si interface radiation damage. In particular, surface damage can create a positive charge layer near the SiO 2 /Si interface and interface traps along the SiO 2 /Si interface, which strongly influence the breakdown voltage, the inter-electrode isolation and capacitance, and might also impact the charge collection properties of silicon sensors. To better understand in a comprehensive framework the complex and articulated phenomena related to surface damage at these very high doses, measurements on test structures have been carried out in this work (e.g. C–V and I–V). In particular, we have st...

Description: Interventional radiologists and staff members are frequently exposed to protracted and fractionated low doses of ionizing radiation due to diffused X-ray radiation. The authors propose a novel approach to monitor on line staff during their interventions by using a device based on an Active Pixel Sensor developed for tracking applications. Two different photodiode configurations have been tested in standard Interventional Radiology working conditions. Both options have demonstrated the capability to measure the photon flux and the energy flux to a sufficient degree of uncertainty.

Description: In this work we propose a 3D monolithically stacked, multi-layer detectors based on CMOS Active Pixel Sensors (APS) layers which allows at the same time accurate estimation of the impact point and of the incidence angle an ionizing particle. The whole system features two fully-functional CMOS APS matrix detectors, including both sensing area and control/signal elaboration circuitry, stacked in a monolithic device by means of Through Silicon Via (TSV) connections thanks to the capabilities of the CMOS vertical scale integration (3D-IC) 130 nm Chartered/Tezzaron technology. In order to evaluate the suitability of the two layer monolithic active pixel sensor system to reconstruct particle tracks, tests with proton beams have been carried out at the INFN LABEC laboratories in Florence (Italy) with 3 MeV proton beam.
