    Notes: Abstract We study source properties of the main earthquakes of the 1997–98 Umbria-Marche (central Italy) sequence by analysis of regional-distanceand teleseismic long period and broadband seismograms recorded by MedNet and IRIS/GSN stations. We use a modified Harvardcentroid-moment tensor (CMT) algorithm to allow inversion of long period waveforms, primarily Rayleigh and Love waves, for small earthquakes (4.2 ≤ MW ≤ 5.5) at local to regional distances (Δ〈15°). For the seven largest earthquakes (MW〉5.2) moment tensors derived from local and regional data agree well with those determined using teleseismic waveforms and standard methods of analysis. We also determine moment tensors for a foreshock and 12 other aftershocks, that were too small for global analysis. Focal depth and rupture propagation are analyzed for three largest shocks by inversion of teleseismic broadband body waves. The earthquakes are generally located at shallow depth (5 km or shallower) and are characterized by normal faulting mechanisms, with a NE-SW tension axis. The presumed principal fault plane dips at a shallow angle towards the SW. Only one of the events analyzed has an entirely different faulting geometry, indicating instead right-lateral strike-slip motion on a plane approximately E-W, or left-lateral faulting on a N-S plane. The other significant exception to the regular pattern of mechanisms is represented by the March 26, 1998, event, located at 51 km depth. Its connection with the shallow earthquake sequence is unclear and intriguing. The time evolution of the seismic sequence is unusual,with the mainshock accounting for only approximately 50% of the total moment release. The broadband teleseismic waveforms of the main, September 26, 09:40, earthquake are very complicated for the size of the event and suggest a complex rupture. In our favored source model, rupture initiated at 5 km depth, propagated updip and was followed, 3 seconds later, by a shallower subevent with a slightly rotated mechanism.

    Description: The Einstein Telescope (ET) is a proposed next-generation, underground gravitational-wave detector to be based in Europe. It will provide about an order of magnitude sensitivity increase with respect to the currently operating detectors and, also extend the observation band targeting frequencies as low as 3 Hz. One of the first decisions that needs to be made is about the future ET site following an in-depth site characterization. Site evaluation and selection is a complicated process, which takes into account science, financial, political, and socio-economic criteria. In this paper, we provide an overview of the site-selection criteria for ET, provide a formalism to evaluate the direct impact of environmental noise on ET sensitivity, and outline the necessary elements of a site-characterization campaign.

    Description: The Italian Government has decreed a series of progressive restrictions to delay the COVID-19 pandemic diffusion in Italy since March 10, 2020, including limitation in individual mobility and the closure of social, cultural, economic and industrial activities. Here we show the lockdown effect in Northern Italy, the COVID-19 most affected area, as revealed by noise variation at seismic stations. The reaction to lockdown was slow and not homogeneous with spots of negligible noise reduction, especially in the first week. A fresh interpretation of seismic noise variations in terms of socio-economic indicators sheds new light on the lockdown efficacy pointing to the causes of such delay: the noise reduction is significant where non strategic activities prevails, while it is small or negligible where dense population and strategic activities are present. These results are crucial for the a posteriori interpretation of the pandemic diffusion and the efficacy of differently targeted political actions.

    Description: As a consequence of climate change and land subsidence, coastal zones are directly impacted by sea-level rise. In some particular areas, the effects on the ecosystem and urbanisation are particularly enhanced. We focus on the Emilia-Romagna (E-R) coastal plain in Northern Italy, bounded by the Po river mouth to the north and by the Apennines to the south. The plain is  ∼ 130 km long and is characterised by wide areas below mean sea level, in part made up of reclaimed wetlands. In this context, several morphodynamic factors make the shore and back shore unstable. During next decades, the combined effects of land subsidence and of the sea-level rise as a result of climate change are expected to enhance the shoreline instability, leading to further retreat. The consequent loss of beaches would impact the economy of the region, which is tightly connected with tourism infrastructures. Furthermore, the loss of wetlands and dunes would threaten the ecosystem, which is crucial for the preservation of life and the environment. These specific conditions show the importance of a precise definition of the possible local impacts of the ongoing and future climate variations. The aim of this work is the characterisation of vulnerability in different sectors of the coastal plain and the recognition of the areas in which human intervention is urgently required. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) sea-level scenarios are merged with new high-resolution terrain models, current data for local subsidence and predictions of the flooding model in_CoastFlood in order to develop different scenarios for the impact of sea-level rise projected to year 2100. First, the potential land loss due to the combined effect of subsidence and sea-level rise is extrapolated. Second, the increase in floodable areas as a result of storm surges is quantitatively determined. The results are expected to support the regional mitigation and adaptation strategies designed in response to climate change.

    Description: The recent discovery of gravitational waves (GWs) and their potential for cosmic observations prompted the design of the future third‐generation GW interferometers, able to extend the observation distance for sources up to the frontier of the Universe. In particular, the European detector Einstein Telescope (ET) has been proposed to reach peak strain sensitivities of about 3×10−25Hz−1/2 in the 100 Hz frequency region and to extend the detection band down to 1 Hz. In the bandwidth [1,10] Hz, the seismic ambient noise is expected to represent the major perturbation to interferometric measurements, and the site that will host the future detectors must fulfill stringent requirements on seismic disturbances. In this article, we conduct a seismological study at the Italian ET candidate site, the dismissed mine of Sos Enattos in Sardinia. In the range between few mHz to hundreds of mHz, out of the detection bandwidth for ET, the seismic noise is compatible with the new low‐noise model (Peterson, 1993); in the [0.1,1] Hz bandwidth, we found that seismic noise is correlated with sea wave height in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. In the [1,10] Hz frequency band, noise is mainly due to anthropic activities; within the mine tunnels (⁠≃100m underground), its spectrum is compliant with the requirements of the ET design. Noise amplitude decay with depth is consistent with a dominance of Rayleigh waves, as suggested by synthetic seismograms calculated for a realistic velocity structure obtained from the inversion of phase‐ and group‐velocity dispersion data from array recording of a mine blasting. Further investigations are planned for a quantitative assessment of the principal noise sources and their spatiotemporal variations.

    Description: In this work we report the ongoing characterization of the Sos Enattos former mine (Sardinia, Italy), one of the two candidate sites for the Einstein Telescope (ET), the European third-generation underground interferometric detector of Gravitational Waves. The Sos Enattos site lies on a crystalline basement, made of rocks with good geomechanical properties, characterized by negligible groundwater. In addition, the site has a very low seismic background noise due to the absence of active tectonics involving Sardinia. Finally, the area has a low population density, resulting in a reduced anthropic noise even at the ground level. This location was already studied in 2012-2014 as a promising site for an underground detector. More recently, in March 2019, we deployed a new network of surface and underground seismometers at the site, that is currently monitoring the local seismic noise. Most of the energy carried by the seismic waves is due to the microseisms below 1 Hz, showing a significant correlation with the waves of the west Mediterranean sea. Above 1 Hz the seismic noise in the underground levels of the mine approaches the Peterson's low noise model. Exploiting mine blasting works into the former mine, we were also able to perform active seismic measurements to evaluate the seismic waves propagation across the area. In conclusion we also give a first assessment about the acoustic and magnetic noise in this underground site.

    Description: The Mediterranean Network (MedNet) presently comprises 22 operating broadband seismic stations installed and maintained in cooperation with 13 geophysical institutions in Italy and in most of the countries adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea. The number of stations may vary as stations are opened or sometimes closed due to different reasons like political, technical, etc., but usually temporarily. All the stations are equipped with Quanterra digitizers and Streckeisen sensors, mostly STS2 with a few STS1. Aim of the network is to contribute to monitoring of one of the most active seismic regions of the World in terms of providing high quality real-time broadband data to the seismological community. Operations started with off-line field data collection and dial-up capabilities were later added at selected sites. At present these have been replaced with more efficient TCP connections that provide for real-time data collection over the whole network. This important technological upgrade allows a prompt contribution to the seismic monitoring of Italy and of most countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, since data are exchanged in real-time with other seismological observatories. SeedLink protocol has been adopted for data transmission. As for data archiving and distribution, a fast system for retrieving data has been developed. Continuous data streams, collected both from field data tapes and from real-time transfer, are stored at the MedNet Data Center and are directly available at users’ request by the standard AutoDRM and NetDC protocols (in GSE and SEED formats respectively). Station metadata and continuous waveforms are archived in a MySQL database on RAID systems and backed up on DLT tapes. Presently, fully automatic network functions include: daily monitoring of state of health; triggered retrieval of event waveforms (with magnitude- and region-specific selection criteria), local and surface wave magnitude determination, and update of web pages (http://mednet.ingv.it) for events and station information. Rapid semiautomatic moment tensor solutions are calculated by means of a modified Harvard technique, which lowers the Mw threshold down to 4.5 for regional events in those areas with proper station coverage. For smaller earthquakes in Italy a new approach to moment tensor estimation, based on higher signal frequencies, is now being developed. Preliminary tests on earthquake recordings (not only MedNet stations) from the 2002 Molise, South Italy, sequence have proved very successful.
