    Notes: The Arizona Community Data Set (ACDS) now contains the results of 40 separate establishment-level, community-wide surveys. These communities can be classified into different functional types, and OLS regression models can be used to explore the relationships among community functions, levels of public transfer payments, and magnitudes of economic base multipliers. The statistical analysis suggests that employment-derived estimates of the base multiplier tend to be biased upward unless transfer payments are specified in the model.

    Notes: Interindustry employment requirements are examined in nonmetropolitan communities ranging in population size between 1,000 and 15,000. A ten-sector economic base model is first used to estimate the demand for nonbasic employment in five different functional types of communities. A new and improved method for community impact assessment is then outlined. Here a distance-weighting procedure is applied to the various type-specific estimates of nonbasic employment so that a composite employment requirements matrix can be calculated for any study community. Finally, postimpact interindustry requirements are decomposed into two effects: preimpact employment requirements plus nonbasic employment shifts reflecting structural change. All estimates and findings are based on the Arizona Community Data Set.

    Notes:   Analysts and policy makers frequently measure industrial localization and regional specialization. However, they rarely examine the nation's full array of industries or regions. So local indices, appropriate for specific industries or selected regions, are typically estimated. But in some instances global indices would be preferable in order to assess the wider features of the entire space-economy. This article constructs global indices from the local indices already used in assessing localization and specialization. Global localization and global specialization are shown to be identical when all local indices use the dissimilarity logic. Two-digit standard industry codes manufacturing data, taken from the U.S. during 1958–1995, are used to illustrate the results. The values of these global coefficients, like their local constituents, are shown to vary with geographic scale. The discussion addresses spatial distributions (evenness) but not geographic arrangements (clustering).

    Integrating Economic Base Theory with Regional Adjustment Models: The Nonmetropolitan Rocky Mountain West (1999)

    Notes: Interest in the use of adjustment models has recently increased as analysts have come to see the value of these models in the study of regional growth processes. Adjustment models are especially useful in clarifying the nature and direction of population-employment interactions. However, other models of regional growth suggest that employment should not be treated as a single homogeneous variable, as is the usual assumption in regional adjustment models. This paper looks at the issue of employment disaggregation, and suggests that adjustment models can be alternatively specified by making use of economic base theory to separate employment into at least two broad sectors. Alternative economic base specifications are tested using data for the nonmetropolitan counties (n=254) of the US. Rocky Mountain West during a recent time period. The results show that an economic base version of the adjustment model provides insights to regional change that are not available from the traditional version of the model.

    Notes: A review of the literature indicates that fairly simplistic measures of equality in travel distances are normally used in facility location studies. Two popular criteria, those of minimizing the maximal distance and the range, are known to be sensitive to the extreme values (locations of users) of the problem. This paper recommends that distributional equality should be used instead in most locational studies. Using a simple spatial setting, the paper offers a comparative analysis of equality curves based on the following measures: Gini coefficient, mean deviation, Hoover's concentration index, variance (standard deviation), and Theil's entropy index.

This article presents a collection of regional science books that long-standing members of the Regional Science Association International (RSAI) identified as path-breaking books. The most frequently nominated books include the “classics” by Isard, the seminal books in urban economics by Alonso, Muth and Mills, methods books by Miernyk, Wilson, Anselin, and Cliff and Ord, textbooks by Beckmann and Richardson, as well as the recent contribution by Fujita, Krugman and Venables. Reviews of these books, written by leading scholars from different continents, make up the major contribution of this article and are a testimony to the far-reaching influence of regional science in the academic literature.

    Notes: Recent findings suggest that spatial competition studies should focus more on markets having numerous firms and realistic topologies. Eventually clarification is needed of the existence conditions and properties of multi-firm equilibria in network markets. This paper uses a traditional conjectures approach to examine long-run equilibria in a variety of one-dimensional markets. In all cases consumer demand is perfectly inelastic, price conjectures are exogenous, and (interior) firms show maximum locational differentiation. The attitude of firms is always myopic and never strategic, however. In a linear market the analysis discloses that firm price depends upon price in the counterpart circular market, a boundary effect, the spatial aggression of exterior firms, and the location of the firm. In a network market the analysis discloses that multiple equilibria occur and that the existence conditions for these equilibria depend upon both the geometric properties of the network and the price conjectures of the firms.
