    Description / Table of Contents: This volume studies the driving dynamic for thick-skin tectonics. It evaluates the role of various factors that control the development of thick-skin architecture. The studied driving dynamics include individual plate movement rates, overall convergence rates, orogen movement sense with respect to mantle flow and pro-wedge versus retro-wedge location. Numerous internal factors that influence the architecture of thick-skinned dominated orogens have been considered. These include the role of the rheology of the deforming layers, the presence or absence of potential detachment horizons, basement buttresses, crustal thickness variations, inherited strength contrasts and the impact of pre-existing anisotropy in thick-skin orogenic deformation. External factors discussed include the role of both syn-tectonic erosion and deposition in deformation. The study areas begin with worldwide examples and close with a detailed coverage of the Northern Andes natural laboratory, which is characterized by particularly robust data coverage--

    Description: 〈title xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"〉Abstract〈/title〉〈p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xml:lang="en"〉The interaction of the northern Nazca and southwestern Caribbean oceanic plates with northwestern South America (NWSA) and the collision of the Panama‐Choco arc (PCA) have significant implications on the evolution of the northern Andes. Based on a quantitative kinematic reconstruction of the Caribbean and Farallon/Farallon‐derived plates, we reconstructed the subducting geometries beneath NWSA and the PCA accretion to the continent. The persistent northeastward migration of the Caribbean plate relative to NWSA in Cenozoic time caused the continuous northward advance of the Farallon‐Caribbean plate boundary, which in turn resulted in its progressive concave trench bending against NWSA. The increasing complexity during the Paleogene included the onset of Caribbean shallow subduction, the PCA approaching the continent, and the forced shallow Farallon subduction that ended in the fragmentation of the Farallon Plate into the Nazca and Cocos plates and the Coiba and Malpelo microplates by the late Oligocene. The convergence tectonics after late Oligocene comprised the accretional process of the PCA to NWSA, which evolved from subduction erosion of the forearc to collisional tectonics by the middle Miocene, as well as changes of convergence angle and slab dip of the Farallon‐derived plates, and the attachment of the Coiba and Malpelo microplates to the Nazca plate around 9 Ma, resulting in a change of convergence directions. During the Pliocene, the Nazca slab broke at 5.5°N, shaping the modern configuration. Overall, the proposed reconstruction is supported by geophysical data and is well correlated with the magmatic and deformation history of the northern Andes.〈/p〉
    Description: Plain Language Summary: The tectonic reconstruction in convergent triple junctions is a particularly challenging task as the relative motion between plates could define highly changing boundaries. Indeed, the resulting interaction between these convergent plates may induce important changes in the disposition of the trenches, and in turn in the three‐dimensional geometry of the subducting plates. Therefore, these highly dynamic conditions throughout geological time may be accommodated by different phases of plate fragmentation and reorganization. These factors could explain the complex spatial‐temporal distribution of subduction‐related magmatism and the different episodes of deformation in the upper plates. This reasoning is validated in the northwestern corner of South America (SA), where the continent has been converging against the Caribbean and Farallon‐derived oceanic plates since Cretaceous time. Additionally, we study the effects of the collision and accretion of the Panama‐Choco arc with SA. To accomplish that, we review the kinematic history of the Farallon/Nazca and Caribbean oceanic plates relative to stable Guiana Craton (SA) and integrate these results with the magmatic and deformation evolution of the northern Andes, which allow us to propose a model of the geometrical evolution of the subducting slabs. The obtained model is additionally constrained by seismological data and published velocity anomalies.〈/p〉

    Notes: The effect of a previous K± stimulation on striatal extracellular monoamine levels during global ischaemia, under simulated penumbral conditions, was investigated. Rats were implanted with microdialysis probes in both striata, monoamine release was stimulated unilaterally by adding K± (100 mM, 20 min) to the artificial CSF perfused through one probe, and bilateral partial ischaemia was imposed after monoamine levels had returned to basal values or below. Resultant increases in dialysate levels of dopamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine were markedly and significantly greater on the side previously exposed to K±, even though electrophysiological measurements indicated similarly severe ischaemia on both sides. Associated monoamine metabolite changes did not differ significantly between the two sides. There was no evidence of greater neuronal loss in the K±-stimulated striata 7 days after ischaemia. However, striatal tissue probably exposed to the highest concentrations of K± could not be examined because of extensive gliosis around the probe.

    Notes: Abstract— We have measured changes in the levels of do-pamine (DA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), and their metabolites in striatal dialysates during 30 min of global ischaemia under simulated penumbral conditions, and compared these with neurological assessments over the following 7 days and histological damage at the end of this period. On the basis of dialysate DA levels during ischaemia, the animals fell into two subgroups; group I, with little or no DA increase (less than three times basal); and group II, with a much larger increase (greater than 30 times basal). Changes in 5-HT, though of lesser magnitude, showed a similar pattern. These findings may indicate that the amine changes depend on a critical reduction of blood flow within the range obtained by our experimental procedure. Levels of deaminated metabolites fell in all ischaemic animals, with comparable decreases of 3, 4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid plus homovanillic acid in both groups. Decreases of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid were greater in group II than in group I, but the relative differences between the groups were much less marked than those of 5-HT. These neuro-chemical findings suggest that moderate ischaemia affects extracellular amine and deaminated metabolite levels by different mechanisms. Only one of the ischaemic rats (a member of group II) showed a marked neurological deficit, but histological damage, as indicated by neuronal loss and gliosis in vulnerable structures, was apparent in all ischaemic animals. Although damage tended to be greater in animals with marked increases in extracellular monoamines, differences were not significant. These findings suggest that the large increases of extracellular DA and 5-HT that sometimes occur in ischaemia may play a relatively small part in the genesis of neuronal damage, though these transmitters may well have a permissive role.

    Notes: The optical absorption coefficient α near the band edge is found to vary exponentially with photon energy in several samples of CuInTe2 single crystals. This behavior, where the extrapolation of ln α vs hυ at different temperatures converges to a single point, is consistent with Urbach's rule. The temperature dependence of Urbach energy KT/σ, calculated from the steepness parameter σ, agrees with the theoretical model that takes into account the contribution of both electron-phonon interaction and structural disorder. It is established that the observed phonon energy higher than the average value calculated from the reported optical modes is due to structural disorder which is caused by the compositional deviation from the ideal stoichiometry. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
