    Notes: Abstract The New Hebrides island arc in Vanuatu has been significantly modified by collision with several major submarine ridges and plateaux. Bathymetric sections taken at intervals along the arc, perpendicular to the trench, show that prior to collision at 3 Ma the morphology was typical of modern intraoceanic island arcs. Collision has caused uplift of the trench and forearc (up to 6000 m), subsidence around the arc volcanic edifices (up to 2500 m), forming a large intra-arc basin and uplift of the arc-backarc transition (up to 2000 m). In the transition zone between collisional and non-collisional sections of the arc, subsidence occurs in the forearc and uplift occurs around the arc volcanoes. Many of these characteristics are typical of collisions in other Western Pacific island arcs such as the Tonga–Kermadec and Izu–Bonin arcs. The pattern of uplift and subsidence has important implications for the tectonic history of the New Hebrides system. The morphology of the arc shows that collision of the West Torres Massif probably accounts for at least half the uplift. Arrival at 0.7 Ma of the West Torres Massif in the trench may have caused the slowing of subduction in the entire northern half of the arc and not just in the central segment as previously suggested. Re-equilibration of the arc following collision probably masks any evidence of collision prior to 3 Ma. For example, the Efate re-entrant, a large indentation in the arc immediately to the south of the collision zone, probably originated as a result of erosion during collision followed by subsidence after collision. The Vanuatu collision shows that the subduction of seamounts and ridges in an intraoceanic arc temporarily changes the arc morphology, allowing the development of angular unconformities and changing the pattern of sedimentation. This provides information which can be used to facilitate recognition of these events in ancient arc-related sequences.

    Description: Volcanism associated with the Kerguelen Large Igneous Province is found scattered in southwestern Australia (the ca 136 to ca 130 Ma Bunbury Basalts, and ca 124 Ma Wallaby Plateau), India (ca 118 Ma Rajmahal Traps and Cona Basalts), and Tibet (the ca 132 Ma Comei Basalts), but apart from the ∼70 000 km2 Wallaby Plateau, these examples are spatially and volumetrically minor. Here, we report dredge, geochronological and geochemical results from the ∼90 000 km2 Naturaliste Plateau, located ∼170 to ∼500 km southwest of Australia. Dredged lavas and intrusive rocks range from mafic to felsic compositions, and prior geophysical analyses indicate these units comprise much of the plateau substrate. 40Ar/39Ar plagioclase ages from mafic units and U–Pb zircon ages from silicic rocks indicate magmatic emplacement from 130.6 ± 1.2 to 129.4 ± 1.3 Ma for mafic rocks and 131.8 ± 3.9 to 128.2 ± 2.3 Ma for silicic rocks (2σ). These Cretaceous Naturaliste magmas incorporated a significant component of continental crust, with relatively high 87Sr/86Sr (up to 0.78), high 207Pb/204 Pb ratios (15.5–15.6), low 143Nd/144Nd (0.511–0.512) and primitive-mantle normalised Th/Nb of 11.3 and La/Nb of 3.97. These geochemical results are consistent with the plateau being underlain by continental basement, as indicated by prior interpretations of seismic and gravity data, corroborated by dredging of Mesoproterozoic granites and gneisses on the southern plateau flank. The Cretaceous Naturaliste Plateau igneous rocks have signatures indicative of extraction from a depleted mantle, with trace-element and isotopic values that overlap with Kerguelen Plateau lavas reflect crustal contamination. Our chemical and geochronological results therefore show the Naturaliste Plateau contains evidence of an extensive igneous event representing some of the earliest voluminous Kerguelen hotspot magmas. Prior work reports that contemporaneous correlative volcanic sequences underlie the nearby Mentelle Basin, and the Enderby Basin and Princess Elizabeth Trough in the Antarctic. When combined, the igneous rocks in the Naturaliste, Mentelle, Wallaby, Enderby, Princess Elizabeth, Bunbury and Comei-Cona areas form a 136–124 Ma Large Igneous Province covering 〉244 000 km2.

    Description: The oldest known, intact sedimentary record of a nascent intraoceanic arc was recovered in a ∼100-m-thick unit (IV) above ca. 49 Ma basaltic basement at International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1438 in the Amami Sankaku Basin. During deposition of Unit IV the site was located ∼250 km from the plate edge, where Izu-Bonin-Mariana subduction initiated at 52 Ma. Basement basalts are overlain by a mudstone-dominated subunit (IVC) with a thin basal layer of dark brown metalliferous mudstone followed by mudstone with sparse, graded laminae of amphibole- and biotite-bearing tuffaceous sandstone and siltstone. Amphibole and zircon ages from these laminae suggest that the intermediate subduction-related magmatism that sourced them initiated at ca. 47 Ma soon after basement formation. Overlying volcaniclastic, sandy, gravity-flow deposits (subunit IVB) have a different provenance; shallow water fauna and tachylitic glass fragments indicate a source volcanic edifice that rose above the carbonate compensation depth and may have been emergent. Basaltic andesite intervals in upper subunit IVB have textures suggesting emplacement as intrusions into unconsolidated sediment on a volcanic center with geochemical and petrological characteristics of mafic, differentiated island arc magmatism. Distinctive Hf-Nd isotope characteristics similar to the least-radiogenic Izu-Bonin-Mariana boninites support a relatively old age for the basaltic andesites similar to detrital amphibole dated at 47 Ma. The absence of boninites at that time may have resulted from the position of Site U1438 at a greater distance from the plate edge. The upper interval of mudstone with tuffaceous beds (subunit IVA) progresses upsection into Unit III, part of a wedge of sediment fed by growing arc-axis volcanoes to the east. At Site U1438, in what was to become a reararc position, the succession of early extensional basaltic magmatism associated with spontaneous subduction initiation is followed by a rapid transition into potentially widespread subduction-related magmatism and sedimentation prior to the onset of focused magmatism and major arc building.
