Description: Global change is impacting the oceans in an unprecedented way with resulting changes in species distributions or species loss. There is increasing evidence that multiple environmental stressors act together to constrain species habitat more than expected from single stressor. Here, we conducted a comprehensive study of the combined impact of ocean warming and acidification (OWA) on a global distribution of pteropods, ecologically important pelagic calcifiers and an indicator species for ocean change. We co-validated three different approaches to evaluate the impact of OWA on pteropod survival and distribution. First, we used co-located physical, chemical, and biological data from oceanographic cruises and regional time-series; second, we conducted multifactorial experimental incubations using OWA to evaluate survival; and third, we validated pteropod distributions using global carbonate chemistry and observation datasets. Habitat suitability indices and global distributions suggest that a multi-stressor framework is essential for understanding distributions of this pelagic calcifier.

Notes: Abstract: The distribution of dopamine D-1 receptors has been determined in human prefrontal cortex (Brodmann's area 9) by an in vitro light microscopic autoradiographic method. Dopamine D-l receptors were localized by using [3H]SCH 23390 as a ligand. Our results indicated that [3H]-SCH 23390 binding to slide-mounted tissue sections of human brain is specific, saturable, and of high affinity. Lamina Va contained the highest density of D-l receptors, with a Bmax value of 11.2 × 1.3 fmol/mg tissue. The KD values for [3H]SCH 23390 in all laminae ranged from 2.6 to 3.2 nM. Competition studies performed with [3H]SCH 23390 indicated a pharmacologic profile consistent with labeling of the D-l receptor.

Notes: The pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis is complex, involving not only histamine and mast cell-derived tryptase, but also eosinophil- and neutrophil-derived mediators, cytokines, and intercellular cell adhesion molecules (ICAM-1). It is surprising that antihistamines, which block only one component of the process, have proved so effective in the management of allergic rhinitis. Research has therefore focused on whether antihistamines have additional pharmacological activities. In vitro studies have shown that high concentrations of second generation antihistamines can block inflammatory mediator release from basophils and mast cells, and reduce ICAM-1 expression in epithelial cell lines. In vivo studies have also shown an effect on the allergen-induced inflammatory reaction; both oral and intranasal antihistamines cause a reduction in nasal symptoms and inflammatory cell influx. Oral terfenadine and cetirizine and intranasal levocabastine and azelastine have also demonstrated a lowering of ICAM-1 expression on epithelial cells. With regard to clinical efficacy, topical levocabastine (0.5mg/mL eye drop solution and 0.5 mg/mL nasal spray) was shown to be more effective than oral terfenadine (60mg twice daily) in relieving ocular itch (P=0.02) and reducing nasal symptoms in allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. In a further study. levocabastine eye drops were as effective and well tolerated as sodium cromoglycate in seasonal allergic rhinitis. Intranasal azelastine (0.28mg twice daily) showed a trend for superior relief of rhinorrhoea and nasal obstruction compared with oral terfenadine (60mg twice daily). In addition, intranasal azelastine (0.28 mg twice daily) resulted in significant reductions in sneezing, nasal obstruction, rhinorrhoea and itching in perennial rhinitis, compared with the lower efficacy of beclomethasone dipropionate (0.1 mg twice daily). As well as benefits in efficacy, topical administration is associated with improved safety. Some antihistamines, particularly those metabolized in the liver, are associated with occasional reports of severe side-effects. It is therefore logical to administer antihistatnines directly to the target organ.

Notes: Abstract The case reports of 3 severely bead-injured adolescents, who developed psychiatric sequelae after (he trauma, are presented. All 3 cases displayed various socially disinhibited behaviours. Individually tailored treatment programmes helped these young people manage their maturational tasks of adolescence. Several issues, central to this rehabilitative work, are discussed, including the personal significance of the adolescent's injury, identity issues and defence mechanisms; a family perspective on coping with (he injured adolescent and the components of a therapeutic package.

Notes: Abstract X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements indicate that the Ce3+ fraction in Al2O3-supported CeO2 can be decreased by the incorporation of La3+. If La3+ is incorporated into the Al2O3 before CeO2 is added, a higher CeO2 dispersion and a greater range of reversible reducibility of the CeO2 may also be obtained. These changes offer potential for improvement in the oxygen storage capacity provided by CeO2 in three-way catalysts.
