Description / Table of Contents: Summary The theoretical treatment of the electrophoretic and the electrorheophoretic radial process and the experimental checking of the results show that by employing the apparatus suggested and described by the authors it is possible to determine for each substance a characteristic index of electrophoretic mobility. This index permits the identification of the substance in question.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of amiodarone used alone or in combination with propranolol in infants and children affected by life-threatening or drug-resistant tachyarrhythmias. The study included 27 children (median age 3 months), affected by life-threatening and/or drug-resistant supraventricular or ventricular tachyarrhythmias. The loading dose of amiodarone was 10–20 mg/kg/day and the maintenance dose ranged between 3 and 20 mg/kg/day. When amiodarone was ineffective, propranolol was added at a dosage of 2–4 mg/kg/day. The study population was divided into two groups: group A was composed of patients 〈1 year and group B of patients 〉1 year. The effectiveness of the therapy was assessed by clinical evaluation, Holter monitoring, exercise testing, and, in patients with reentry tachycardias, electrophysiological testing. Amiodarone used alone was effective or partially effective in 4/14 (28%) patients in group A and in 11/13 (85%) patients in group B (p 〈 0.006). Among amiodarone-resistant patients, the combined therapy with propranolol was effective in 8/10 patients in group A and 2/2 patients in group B. Therefore, amiodarone used alone or in combination with propranolol was effective in 25/27 (93%) patients. During the follow-up (20.5 ± 13 months) there were no arrhythmic effects but side effects were noted in 5/27 (18.5%) patients. Amiodarone seems to be an effective drug in the control of the life-threatening and/or drug-resistant supraventricular and ventricular tachyarrhythmias in children. The addition of propranolol can significantly enhance the success rate of this class III drug, especially in the treatment of reentry tachycardias due to accessory pathways.

Notes: Abstract Applications of arc plasma processing to high-temperature chemistry of Group V nitrides and Si and Ge alloys are studied. The transition metal nitrides δ-VN, δ-NbN, and δ-TaN are directly synthesized in a dc argon-nitrogen plasma from powders of the metals. A large excess of N2 is required to form stoichiometric δ-VN, while the Nb and Ta can only be synthesized with a substoichiometric N content. In a dc argon plasma the alloys V3Si, VSi2, NbSi2, NbGe2, Cr3Si, and Mo3Si are obtained from powder mixtures of the corresponding elements. The compounds are identified by x-ray diffraction patterns and particle shape and size are studied by electron microscopy.

Notes: Abstract This study evaluated the role of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) as a risk factor in a general population of 2079 non-diabetic elderly subjects. The 10-year cardiovascular morbidity was similar in normal and IGT subjects. Mortality was greater in IGT, but the Cox equations of the hazard rate were different in younger and older subjects: age, sex, lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 s, FEV1), serum uric acid, IGT and proteinuria were predictors of overall mortality in the age class 65–79 years, while only the first 4 were associated with cardiovascular mortality. The same four items also predicted overall survival in subjects over 79 years old, while only age and uric acid were predictors of cardiovascular mortality. In older subjects, total cholesterol showed an inverse predictive value. Hyperuricaemia (〉6.4 mg/dl) and proteinuria did predict mortality in normal but not in IGT subjects, while reduced FEV1 (〈60% theoretical) was predictive in all. In 65–79-year-old subjects IGT predicted mortality provided that FEV1 was normal, while in those 380 years old IGT was not a predictor. These interrelationships should be taken into account to better understand the factors underlying mortality.

Notes: Summary A population of small covalently closed non-mitochondrial circular DNA molecules was isolated from the petite-negative yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The mean length of these molecules, possessing the same density as nuclear DNA (1.695 g/ cm3) is 1.95±0.18 μm. The presence of these minicircles in crude mitochondrial preparations indicates their tight association with mitochondrial particles. Their disappearance after DNase treatment of mitochondria demonstrates their extramitochondrial location.
