Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 333-334, 293-303, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2012.03.033

Description: Within the last decade, the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) and its surroundings have experienced record high surface temperatures (Mote, 2007, doi:10.1029/2007GL031976; Box et al., 2010), ice sheet melt extent (Fettweis et al., 2011, doi:10.5194/tc-5-359-2011) and record-low summer sea-ice extent (Nghiem et al., 2007, doi:10.1029/2007GL031138). Using three independent data sets, we derive, for the first time, consistent ice-mass trends and temporal variations within seven major drainage basins from gravity fields from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE; Tapley et al., 2004, doi:10.1029/2004GL019920), surface-ice velocities from Inteferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR; Rignot and Kanagaratnam, 2006, doi:10.1126/science.1121381) together with output of the regional atmospheric climate modelling (RACMO2/ GR; Ettema et al., 2009, doi:10.1029/2009GL038110), and surface-elevation changes from the Ice, cloud and land elevation satellite (ICESat; Sorensen et al., 2011, doi:10.5194/tc-5-173-2011). We show that changing ice discharge (D), surface melting and subsequent run-off (M/R) and precipitation (P) all contribute, in a complex and regionally variable interplay, to the increasingly negative mass balance of the GrIS observed within the last decade. Interannual variability in P along the northwest and west coasts of the GrIS largely explains the apparent regional mass loss increase during 2002-2010, and obscures increasing M/R and D since the 1990s. In winter 2002/2003 and 2008/2009, accumulation anomalies in the east and southeast temporarily outweighed the losses by M/R and D that prevailed during 2003-2008, and after summer 2010. Overall, for all basins of the GrIS, the decadal variability of anomalies in P, M/R and D between 1958 and 2010 (w.r.t. 1961-1990) was significantly exceeded by the regional trends observed during the GRACE period (2002-2011).

Notes: In this paper we formulate the boundary-value problem for the determination of the gravimetric geoid considering a satellite gravitational model as a reference. We show that the long-wavelength part of the gravitational field generated by topographical masses must be added to the satellite model in order to prescribe a reference gravitational potential for a partly internal and partly external problem for geoid determination. We choose a reference potential that does not depend on the way topographical masses are compensated or condensed, but only on the satellite reference model and on the difference of gravitational potentials induced by topographical masses in the spaces outside the Earth and below the geoid. The latter contribution to the reference potential is expressed in the form of an ellipsoidal harmonic series, and the expansion coefficients are tabulated numerically up to degree 20.

Notes: The spherical propagator matrix for free spheroidal elastic oscillations of SNREI Earth's model has been derived in an analytical form. It is expressed in terms of cross-products of spherical Bessel functions and their derivatives. A new computational algorithm is proposed to ensure an improvement in economy and accuracy in machine computations.

Notes: The compilation of new global Mohorovičic̀ (‘Moho’) topographic data enables us to estimate the density contrast between the crust and mantle. Assuming that this contrast is constant, the minimization of the external gravitational potential induced by the Earth's topographic masses and the Moho discontinuity gives the value of 0.28 gcm−3 for the density jump at the Moho under the continental areas. For the oceanic areas where the information about the Moho depths is unavailable or poor, the procedure has not been applied.

Notes: Based on the recently compiled crustal-thickness data, it is shown that the Airy-Heiskanen model of compensation only partly compensates the surface topographic masses. to fit the external gravitational potential induced by the surface topography, the Pratt-Hayford concept of compensation has also to be considered. Employing the dynamical flattening of the Earth, the minimum depth of compensation has been estimated to be of the order of 100–150 km. This means that the topographic masses are compensated throughout the Earth's lithosphere at least.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The paper is concerned with the properties of a density distribution within the Earth. A system of density parameter constraints involving Stokes' coefficients of the gravity field and the parameters describing the Earth's figure is derived. A density model, whose parameters fit these constraints, accounts for the fine structure of the gravity field and Earth's figure. Additional condition imposed on the average spherical density model are derived; they guarantee that the average spherical model is compatible with the 3-D density model.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Matrix formulae for the intensities of the M- and E-fields have been derived. They have been applied to express the apparent resistivity, the transfer function, as well as the frequency equation determining the frequencies of free motion of the M- and E-waves. A fast algorithm for computing the transfer function and the apparent resistivity has been suggested.
