    Notes: : Systematic sampling of waterways and irrigation runoff from agricultural lands in the North Platte Project of Nebraska in July and August of 1972–1974 demonstrated that phytopathogenic organisms were disseminated. The organisms monitored included the bean common blight bacterium Xanthomonas phaseoli, the bean white mold fungus Whetzelinia sclerotiorum and various nematodes. Although many types of nematodes often were recovered from irrigation water, Heterodera sp. cysts which cause significant disease problems in the valley were found infrequently. Patterns of movement of the bacterial and fungal organisms were correlated with previous or current season infection of bean plants. The short-term survival of X. phaseoli in sterile deionized water may explain the detection of this organism only in runoff or ditches receiving runoff from common blight infected bean fields. Sclerotial bodies of W. sclerotiorum remained viable for at least 10–21 days in flowing water and were found throughout the irrigation waterways. Irrigation of beans with contaminated water can result in both common blight and white mold diseases. Dissemination of phytopathogenic organisms in irrigation reuse systems as well as agricultural land runoff should be considered in irrigation planning and system design.

    Notes: Using a combination of model simulations and detailed measurements at a hierarchy of scales conducted at a sandhills forest site, the effect of fertilization on net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and its components in 6-year-old Pinus taeda stands was quantified. The detailed measurements, collected over a 20-d period in September and October, included gas exchange and eddy covariance fluxes, sampled for a 10-d period each at the fertilized stand and at the control stand. Respiration from the forest floor and above-ground biomass was measured using chambers during the experiment. Fertilization doubled leaf area index (LAI) and increased leaf carboxylation capacity by 20%. However, this increase in total LAI translated into an increase of only 25% in modelled sunlit LAI and in canopy photosynthesis. It is shown that the same climatic and environmental conditions that enhance photosynthesis in the September and October periods also cause an increase in respiration The increases in respiration counterbalanced photosynthesis and resulted in negligible NEE differences between fertilized and control stands. The fact that total biomass of the fertilized stand exceeded 2·5 times that of the control, suggests that the counteracting effects cannot persist throughout the year. In fact, modelled annual carbon balance showed that gross primary productivity (GPP) increased by about 50% and that the largest enhancement in NEE occurred in the spring and autumn, during which cooler temperatures reduced respiration more than photosynthesis. The modelled difference in annual NEE between fertilized  and  control  stands  (approximately  200 1;g 2;C 3;m−2 y−1)  suggest that the effect of fertilization was sufficiently large to transform the stand from a net terrestrial carbon source to a net sink.

    Notes: Fertilization commonly increases biomass production in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.). However, the sequence of short-term physiological adjustments allowing for the establishment of leaf area and enhanced growth is not well understood. The effects of fertilization on photosynthetic parameters, root respiration, and growth for over 200 d following the application of diammonium phosphate were intensively investigated in an effort to establish a relative sequence of events associated with improved growth. Root respiration, foliar nitrogen concentration [N]f, and light-saturated net photosynthesis (Asat) temporarily increased following fertilization. Asat was correlated positively with [N]f when non-fertilized and fertilized treatments were pooled (R2 = 0.47). Increased photosynthetic capacity following fertilization was due to both improved photochemical efficiency and capacity and enhanced carboxylation capacity of Rubisco. Positive effects of fertilization on growth were observed shortly after Asat increased. Fertilized seedlings had 36.5% more leaf area and 36.5% greater total dry weight biomass at 211 d following fertilization. It is concluded that fertilization temporarily increased photosynthetic capacity, which resulted in a pool of photo-assimilate used to build leaf area. The N from fertilizer initially invested in photosynthetic structures and enzymes probably re-translocated to newly developing foliage, explaining the reduction in [N]f and Asat that was observed after peak levels were achieved following fertilization.

    Notes: Forest floor CO2 efflux (Fff) depends on vegetation type, climate, and soil physical properties. We assessed the effects of biological factors on Fff by comparing a maturing pine plantation (PP) and a nearby mature Oak-Hickory-type hardwood forest (HW). Fff was measured continuously with soil chambers connected to an IRGA during 2001–2002. At both sites, Fff depended on soil temperature at 5 cm (T5) when soil was moist (soil moisture, θ〉0.20 m3 m−3), and on both T5 and θ when soil was drier. A model (Fff (T5, θ)) explained 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:13541013:GCB915:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉92% of the variation in the daily mean Fff at both sites. Higher radiation reaching the ground during the leafless period, and a thinner litter layer because of faster decomposition, probably caused higher soil temperature at HW compared with PP. The annual Fff was estimated at 1330 and 1464 g C m−2 yr−1 for a year with mild drought (2001) at PP and HW, respectively, and 1231 and 1557 g C m−2 yr−1 for a year with severe drought (2002). In the wetter year, higher soil temperature and moisture at HW compared with PP compensated for the negative effect on Fff of the response to these variables resulting in similar annual Fff at both stands. In the drier year, however, the response to soil temperature and moisture was more similar at the two stands causing the difference in the state variables to impel a higher Fff at HW. A simple mass balance indicated that in the wetter year, C in the litter–soil system was at steady state at HW, and was accruing at PP. However, HW was probably losing C from the mineral soil during the severe drought year of 2002, while PP was accumulating C at a lower rate because of a loss of C from the litter layer. Such contrasting behavior of two forest types in close proximity might frustrate attempts to estimate regional carbon (C) fluxes and net C exchange.

    Notes: Background: Pantoprazole is a new substituted benzimidazole which inhibits gastric H+,K+-ATPase. Methods: In this double-blind, multicentre study, pantoprazole 40 mg once daily was compared with omeprazole 20 mg once daily in the treatment of grade II and III (Savary–Miller) reflux oesophagitis. Endoscopy was repeated after 4 weeks of treatment, and also after 8 weeks in patients unhealed at 4 weeks. Results: The primary efficacy variable was ulcer healing; after 4 weeks, 81/103 (78.6%) patients in the pantoprazole group and 83/105 (79.0%) patients in the omeprazole group had healed completely. After 8 weeks, the cumulative healing rates were 94.2% and 91.4 % in the pantoprazole and omeprazole groups, respectively (P 〉 0.05 at 4 weeks and 8 weeks). Both groups experienced rapid relief of the key symptoms: heartburn, acid regurgitation and pain on swallowing. The time course of relief of the individual symptoms was similar in both groups after 2 and 4 weeks (P 〉 0.05). Both treatments were well tolerated, with only three patients withdrawing owing to adverse events. Conclusion: Pantoprazole has been shown to be as effective as omeprazole in the treatment of reflux oesophagitis.

    Notes: Pantoprazole is a benzimidazole derivative which selectively inhibits the proton pump H+, K+-ATPase necessary for the final step in gastric acid secretion.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To investigate the tolerability and the prophylactic effect of pantoprazole 40 mg once daily on relapse in patients whose reflux oesophagitis had been healed.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:The safety of pantoprazole 40 mg once daily was assessed in an open 1-year trial on 222 patients whose reflux oesophagitis had been healed with omeprazole or pantoprazole. Relapse was defined as endoscopically-confirmed reflux oesophagitis (at least Grade I), with endoscopies being performed for patients experiencing 3 consecutive days of disease-specific symptoms.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Kaplan–Meier survival analysis at 6 and 12 months gave estimated treatment failure rates of 2% and 6% from confirmed relapses (per-protocol), and of 9% and 30% for a worst-case group (all withdrawals counted as failures). The only population shift in laboratory variables was a doubling of the median serum gastrin level over the first 6 months; thereafter it stabilized. Fifty-four (24%) patients experienced adverse events; 15 of these withdrew. Serious adverse events were reported for 12 patients.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:Pantoprazole appears to be highly effective and to have a good safety profile for long-term prophylaxis of reflux oesophagitis.
