Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1 Map of the Castelsardo area with sampling sites indicated. The volcanic rocks of northern Sardinia consist of andesites, trachytes and liparites. Tuffs, tuffites and sediments are intercalated. The exposures are discontinuous, the sediments show Tapid facies transitions, and block faulting ...

Notes: [Auszug] The sampled rocks are ignimbritic pheno-trachy-andesites, which occur as extensive flow sheets. They are considered to be of Oligocene, perhaps Early Miocene age4. Tuffs and conglomerates are intercalated. Ten flows have been sampled from about twenty, each flow at one site only (Fig. 1). The ...

Notes: Abstract Paleomagnetic study of specimens from four lamprophyric dykes on the Kukri Hills, Taylor Valley (77.64°S, 163.35°E) has yielded a primary mean direction of magnetization ofD=222.6 andI=+0.6 with α95=10.9° after AF cleaning. The magnetization of five other dykes and of the amphibolitic basement was either unstable or not fully reliable. The corresponding pole position lies at 9.3°S and 26.7°E and confirms the previous results from Lower Ordovician rocks from distant areas of East Antarctica. A Lower Ordovician mean pole position recalculated from valid data lies at 17°S, 21°E.

Notes: Abstract The microbial oxidation of various primary alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes has been investigated. A focused screening performed amongst some acetic acid bacteria showed that a newly isolated strain of Gluconobacter oxydans oxodizes various short-chain aliphatic alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes with negligible acid production. 3-Methyl-1-butanol (isoamyl alcohol) proved to be the better substrate with high yields (more than 90%) without by-product formation. This biotransformation also occurs with continuous or semicontinuous addition of substrate since the volatile product is removed from the medium under vigorous aeration conditions. Product recovery is attained either by the use of cold traps or by reversible complex formation.

Notes: Summary d-Xylanase (1,4-β-xylan xylanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.8) was obtained from mycelial submerged culture of the mushroom Schizophyllum radiatum, grown on wheat straw pretreated with “steam explosion” as the substrate. The enzyme was purified 192-fold (specific activity 455 IU mg-1 protein), with 37% yield with respect to total d-xylanase activity. Polyacrylamide electrophoresis of the d-xylanase peak showed a single band of protein whose molecular weight, calculated by electrophoretic mobility, was 25 700. The enzyme exhibited maximum activity at pH 4.9 and 55°C. d-Xylanase was stable from pH 5.0 to 7.5; its half-life was 12 h at 45°C. The Michaelis constant was 9.5 mg ml-1 and V max 0.37 μ mole min-1. End-product analysis of the d-xylan hydrolysate showed the presence of d-xylobiose, d-xylotriose, d-xylotetraose, and d-xylopentose showing the mode of action of an endo-type enzyme.

Notes: Abstract The survey of radiometric and paleomagnetic work on the mafic rocks of South Carolina is consistent with, and amplifies the studies on the acidic rocks of the southeast by Ellwood (1982). The westerly post-early Mesozoic tilt of the southeastern Appalachians proposed by Dooley and Smith (1982) over most of the Piedmont balances out the post-late Paleozoic southeastern tilt of Ellwood (1982). Only in the Elberton-Sparta block is the tilting important and here the interpretation proposed is of a greater initial tilt (approximately 25–30°) reduced by the post-early Mesozoic tilt. There is no evidence of displaced terrains as far as the King's Mountain, Charlotte, and Slate belts are concerned at least since 300 m.y. ago and perhaps as early as 350 m.y. ago. The anomalous paleomagnetic data from the Kiokee belt is best interpreted as due to tectonic displacements associated with the late Paleozoic event described by Secor and Snoke (1978) and Snokeet al. (1980). The paleopoles of the mafic rocks are in agreement with paleopoles on the North American apparent polar wander path (APWP) at about 300 m.y. The resolution of K−Ar apparent ages of 350 m.y. or older will require40Ar/39Ar studies and such age relationships are critical to the reasonable application of tilt corrections in the southern Appalachians.

Notes: Summary Sulfhydryl blockers, such as N-ethylmaleimide, iodoacetate and heavy metals induce a transitory stimulation of O2 consumption and H2O2 production (oxidative burst) and a rapid release of electrolytes in leaves of various aquatic plants. The correlation between these two responses to N-ethylmaleimide or to Ag+ in separate organs and stages of leaf development was investigated inEgeria densa. Only adult leaves were able to respond to the sulfhydryl blockers with an oxidative burst, whereas this response was absent in immature growing leaves and in stem and root segments. In N-ethyl-maleimide- as well as in Ag+-treated adult leaves the oxidative burst was constantly associated with a relevant electrolyte leakage. These data are consistent with a model in which the SH reagent would first interact with a plasmalemma protein, leading to an increase in passive permeability to ions and to the activation of an oxidative enzyme of the type of the superoxide synthase described for granulocytes. In its turn, active-oxygen species produced by the activated oxidase might further damage the plasma membrane, increasing its passive permeability. Digitonin and nystatin, two reagents known to cause a permeabilization of lipid membranes, induced in adultE. densa leaves a transient increase in the rate of O2 consumption and H2O2 production and an electrolyte leakage very similar to those induced by sulfhydryl blockers. These effects, however, were not influenced by the flavin analogues diphenylene iodonium and quinacrine, and were partially inhibited by the presence of CN− and salicylhydroxamic acid, thus suggesting the involvement of a different oxidase in the oxidative burst elicited by these reagents.

Notes: Summary The production of the K4 polysaccharide was obtained for the first time extracellularly from a strain of Escherichia coli. The set up of the fermentation conditions led to the maximum fermentation yield, as extracellular K4, after 20 h. Purification and characterization of this K4 resulted in 200 mg/L of highly purified K4.
