Description: An anaerobic nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizing bacterium, Pseudogulbenkiania sp. strain 2002, was used to investigate As immobilization by biogenic Fe oxyhydroxides under different initial molar ratios of Fe/As in solutions. Results showed that Fe(II) was effectively oxidized, mainly forming lepidocrocite, which immobilized more As(III) than As(V) without changing the redox state of As. When the initial Fe/As ratios were kept constant, higher initial Fe(II) concentrations immobilized more As with higher Asimmobilized/Feprecipitated in biogenic lepidocrocite. EXAFS analysis showed that variations of initial Fe(II) concentrations did not change the As–Fe complexes (bidentate binuclear complexes (2C)) with a fixed As(III) or As(V) initial concentration of 13.3 μM. On the other hand, variations in initial As concentrations but fixed Fe(II) initial concentration induced the co-occurrence of bidentate binuclear and bidentate mononuclear complexes (2E) and bidentate binuclear and monodentate mononuclear complexes (1V) for As(III) and As(V)-treated series, respectively. The coexistence of 2C and 2E complexes (or 2C and 1V complexes) could contribute to higher As removal in experimental series with higher initial Fe(II) concentrations at the same initial Fe/As ratio. Simultaneous removal of soluble As and nitrate by anaerobic nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria provides a feasible approach for in situ remediation of As-nitrate cocontaminated groundwater.

Description: Map-Reduce-Merge is an improved parallel programming model based on Map-Reduce in cloud computing environment. Through the new Merge module, Map-Reduce-Merge can support processing multiple related heterogeneous datasets more efficiently. In order to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of this new model, we present a rigorous description for Map-Reduce-Merge model using Haskell. Firstly, we describe the basic program skeleton of Map-Reduce-Merge programming model. Secondly, an abstract description for the Merge module is presented by analyzing the structure and function of the Merge module with Haskell as the description tool. Thirdly, we evaluate the Map-Reduce-Merge model on the basis of our description. We capture the functional characteristics of the Map-Reduce-Merge model by our abstract description, which can provide theoretical basis for designing more efficient parallel programming model to process join operation.

Description: Positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) is a strategic key technology widely used in military and civilian applications. Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) are the most important PNT techniques. However, the vulnerability of GNSS threatens PNT service quality, and integrations with other information are necessary. A chip scale atomic clock (CSAC) provides high-precision frequency and high-accuracy time information in a short time. A micro inertial measurement unit (MIMU) provides a strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS) with rich navigation information, better real-time feed, anti-jamming, and error accumulation. This study explores the coupled integration of CSAC, MIMU, and GNSS to enhance PNT performance. The architecture of coupled integration is designed and degraded when any subsystem fails. A mathematical model for a precise time aiding navigation filter is derived rigorously. The CSAC aids positioning by weighted linear optimization when the visible satellite number is four or larger. By contrast, CSAC converts the GNSS observations to range measurements by “clock coasting” when the visible satellite number is less than four, thereby constraining the error divergence of micro inertial navigation and improving the availability of GNSS signals and the positioning accuracy of the integration. Field vehicle experiments, both in open-sky area and in a harsh environment, show that the integration can improve the positioning probability and accuracy.

Description: Electrical self-sustained oscillations have been observed in a broad range of two-terminal systems and are of interest as possible building blocks for bio-inspired neuromorphic computing. In this work, we experimentally explore voltage-controlled oscillations in NbO x devices with a particular focus on understanding how the frequency and waveform are influenced by circuit parameters. We also introduce a finite element model of the device based on a Joule-heating induced insulator-metal transition. The electroformed device structure is represented by a cylindrical conductive channel (filament) comprised of NbO/NbO 2 zones and surrounded by an Nb 2 O 5− x matrix. The model is shown to reproduce the current-controlled negative differential resistance observed in measured current-voltage curves, and is combined with circuit elements to simulate the waveforms and dynamics of an isolated Pearson–Anson oscillator. Such modeling is shown to provide considerable insight into the relationship between the material response and device and circuit characteristics.

Description: The stress-induced unfolded protein response (UPR) in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) involves various signaling cross-talks and controls cell fate. B-cell receptor (BCR) signaling, which can trigger UPR, induces gammaherpesvirus lytic replication and serves as a physiological mechanism for gammaherpesvirus reactivation in vivo. However, how the UPR regulates BCR-mediated gammaherpesvirus infection is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the ER stressors tunicamycin and thapsigargin inhibit BCR-mediated murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV68) lytic replication by inducing expression of the UPR mediator Bip and blocking activation of Akt, ERK, and JNK. Both Bip and the downstream transcription factor ATF4 inhibited BCR-mediated MHV68 lytic gene expression, whereas UPR-induced C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) was required for and promoted BCR-mediated MHV68 lytic replication by suppressing upstream Bip and ATF4 expression. Bip knockout was sufficient to rescue BCR-mediated MHV68 lytic gene expression in CHOP knockout cells, and this rescue was blocked by ectopic ATF4 expression. Furthermore, ATF4 directly inhibited promoter activity of the MHV68 lytic switch transactivator RTA. Altogether, we show that ER stress–induced CHOP inhibits Bip and ATF4 expression and that ATF4, in turn, plays a critical role in CHOP-mediated regulation of BCR-controlled MHV68 lytic replication. We conclude that ER stress–mediated UPR and BCR signaling pathways are interconnected and form a complex network to regulate the gammaherpesvirus infection cycle.
