Description: As part of the ICDP project PaleoVan, two sites were drilled in the Lake Van (eastern Turkey) in summer 2010. The main objective of the drilling campaign is the reconstruction of paleoclimate based on the drilled sediment cores. This thesis deals with a different aspect of the project. Physical property data were created by downhole- and core logging. Both, core and downhole-logging data were used to calculate synthetic seismograms for the Ahlat-Ridge site. The correlation of the synthetics with measured seismic data collected during a pre-site survey in 2004 allowed to assign accurate depth to the main marker horizons. The reectors were then assigned to lithological layers using core photographies. Most lithologies were identied als tephra. Furthermore there have been detected gassy sediments and material transitions. An extrapolation of the marker horizons beyond the drilling location was also performed, but achieved only limited success. Disturbed sediments and steep slopes limited the extrapolation of the reectors in many areas. The study of further drillings is recommended, to achieve a better extrapolation.
