    Notes: The surface chemistry of triethylaluminum, triethylgallium, triethylindium, and triethylantimony was studied on GaAs(100) using thermal desorption spectroscopy, static secondary ion mass spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Ethylene, the major hydrocarbon reaction product, desorbs from the GaAs(100) surface during thermal desorption spectroscopy experiments at 565 K for all four molecules. This indicates an identical rate limiting step for the elimination of ethyl groups from the surface following adsorption of these molecules. We propose that ethyl groups migrate to Ga sites and then undergo reaction at these sites. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Five intervals in the pericentromeric region of human chromosome 10 have been defined using a panel of somatic cell hybrids carrying portions of the chromosome. The map positions of twelve markers, consisting of four genes and eight anonymous DNA segments, have been localized by assignment to one of the five intervals. Several other markers could be placed in specific intervals by genetic linkage to assigned loci. When previously published data are incorporated, the summary map of the pericentromeric region encompasses thirty-two loci in bands 10p11.2-q11.2.

    Description: We present an XMM–Newton observation of the highly polarized low-surface-brightness supernova remnant (SNR) G107.5–1.5, discovered with the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey. We do not detect diffuse X-ray emission from the SNR and set an upper limit on the surface brightness of ~2 10 30  erg arcmin –2  s –1 , at an assumed distance of 1.1 kpc. We found eight bright point sources in the field, including the ROSAT source 1RXS J225203.8+574249 near the centre of the radio shell. Spectroscopic analysis of some of the embedded point sources, including the ROSAT source, has been performed, and all eight sources are most likely ruled out as the associated neutron star, primarily due to counterpart bright stars in optical and infrared bands. Timing analysis of the bright point sources yielded no significant evidence for pulsations, but, due to the timing resolution, only a small part of the frequency space could be searched. An additional 10 fainter point sources were identified in the vicinity of the SNR. Further X-ray observation of these and the region in the vicinity of the radio shell may be warranted.

    Description: Background— 3D stereolithographic printing can be used to convert high-resolution computed tomography images into life-size physical models. We sought to apply 3D printing technologies to develop patient-specific models of the anatomic and functional characteristics of severe aortic valve stenosis. Methods and Results— Eight patient-specific models of severe aortic stenosis (6 tricuspid and 2 bicuspid) were created using dual-material fused 3D printing. Tissue types were identified and segmented from clinical computed tomography image data. A rigid material was used for printing calcific regions, and a rubber-like material was used for soft tissue structures of the outflow tract, aortic root, and noncalcified valve cusps. Each model was evaluated for its geometric valve orifice area, echocardiographic image quality, and aortic stenosis severity by Doppler and Gorlin methods under 7 different in vitro stroke volume conditions. Fused multimaterial 3D printed models replicated the focal calcific structures of aortic stenosis. Doppler-derived measures of peak and mean transvalvular gradient correlated well with reference standard pressure catheters across a range of flow conditions ( r =0.988 and r =0.978 respectively, P 〈0.001). Aortic valve orifice area by Gorlin and Doppler methods correlated well ( r =0.985, P 〈0.001). Calculated aortic valve area increased a small amount for both methods with increasing flow ( P =0.002). Conclusions— By combing the technologies of high-spatial resolution computed tomography, computer-aided design software, and fused dual-material 3D printing, we demonstrate that patient-specific models can replicate both the anatomic and functional properties of severe degenerative aortic valve stenosis.

    Description: Background— The aim of this study was to test the accuracy of an automated 3-dimensional (3D) proximal isovelocity surface area (PISA) (in vitro and patients) and stroke volume technique (patients) to assess mitral regurgitation (MR) severity using real-time volume color flow Doppler transthoracic echocardiography. Methods and Results— Using an in vitro model of MR, the effective regurgitant orifice area and regurgitant volume (RVol) were measured by the PISA technique using 2-dimensional (2D) and 3D (automated true 3D PISA) transthoracic echocardiography. The mean anatomic regurgitant orifice area (0.35±0.10 cm 2 ) was underestimated to a greater degree by the 2D (0.12±0.05 cm 2 ) than the 3D method (0.25±0.10 cm 2 ; P 〈0.001 for both). Compared with the flowmeter (40±14 mL), the RVol by 2D PISA (20±19 mL) was underestimated ( P 〈0.001), but the 3D peak (43±16 mL) and integrated PISA-based (38±14 mL) RVol were comparable ( P 〉0.05 for both). In patients (n=30, functional MR), 3D effective regurgitant orifice area correlated well with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging RVol r =0.84 and regurgitant fraction r =0.80. Compared with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging RVol (33±22 mL), the integrated PISA RVol (34±26 mL; P =0.42) was not significantly different; however, the peak PISA RVol was higher (48±27 mL; P 〈0.001). In addition, RVol calculated as the difference in automated mitral and aortic stroke volumes by real-time 3D volume color flow Doppler echocardiography was not significantly different from cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (34±21 versus 33±22 mL; P =0.33). Conclusions— Automated real-time 3D volume color flow Doppler based 3D PISA is more accurate than the 2D PISA method to quantify MR. In patients with functional MR, the 3D RVol by integrated PISA is more accurate than a peak PISA technique. Automated 3D stroke volume measurement can also be used as an adjunctive method to quantify MR severity.

    Description: In platelets, splicing and translation occur in the absence of a nucleus. However, the integrity and stability of mRNAs derived from megakaryocyte progenitor cells remain poorly quantified on a transcriptome-wide level. As circular RNAs (circRNAs) are resistant to degradation by exonucleases, their abundance relative to linear RNAs can be used as a surrogate marker for mRNA stability in the absence of transcription. Here we show that circRNAs are enriched in human platelets 17- to 188-fold relative to nucleated tissues and 14- to 26-fold relative to samples digested with RNAse R to selectively remove linear RNA. We compare RNAseq read depths inside and outside circRNAs to provide in silico evidence of transcript circularity, show that exons within circRNAs are enriched on average 12.7 times in platelets relative to nucleated tissues and identify 3162 genes significantly enriched for circRNAs, including some where all RNAseq reads appear to be derived from circular molecules. We also confirm that this is a feature of other anucleate cells through transcriptome sequencing of mature erythrocytes, demonstrate that circRNAs are not enriched in cultured megakaryocytes, and demonstrate that linear RNAs decay more rapidly than circRNAs in platelet preparations. Collectively, these results suggest that circulating platelets have lost 〉90% of their progenitor mRNAs and that translation in platelets occurs against the backdrop of a highly degraded transcriptome. Finally, we find that transcripts previously classified as products of reverse transcriptase template switching are both enriched in platelets and resistant to decay, countering the recent suggestion that up to 50% of rearranged RNAs are artifacts.
