    Description: Physical properties measurements provide a relatively inexpensive and fast way to obtain high-resolution estimates of the variations in sedimentological properties. To better resolve the validity and cause of the geophysical signals measured by the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) shipboard multisensor track (MST) instruments, 223 x 10 cm**3 core samples were collected at 4 cm intervals in Core 167-1016B-17H at the California Margin Conception Transect for the measurements of index properties, carbonate content, and opal content. This core was chosen because hole-to-hole stratigraphic correlation of MST data suggested that Core 17H corresponds to a depth interval that displays the greatest range of amplitude of many physical properties.

    Description: Recent modeling studies call on increased ocean heat transport to explain high-latitude warming observed for intervals throughout the middle Pliocene. Possible vehicles for ocean heat transport are the poleward arms of the subtropical gyres. Sites from the California margin (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 167) provide monitors of wind field within the eastern arm of the gyre which may be an indication of basin-wide subtropical gyral strength. At most sites (water depths from 1106 to 4212 m) CaCO3 mass accumulation rate (MAR) was highest in the middle Pliocene (3.5-2.0 Ma). This high CaCO3 MAR 'event' is attributed primarily to higher CaCO3 production due to higher offshore upwelling associated with the zone of the greatest wind stress curl. Thus, in the middle Pliocene, there was enhanced wind stress curl along the California margin, and possibly enhanced North Pacific sub-tropical gyral circulation and meridional ocean heat advection.

    Notes: In a system of plane parallel fractures, it is often assumed that resistance to slip on the fractures is independent of the direction of that slip. The fracture system then is transversely isotropic in its elastic properties and can be characterized by just two numbers: the compliances normal and tangential to the fractures, for example. But any relief on the fracture surfaces will destroy the symmetry and demand additional elastic constants. In general, a system of plane parallel fractures has a 3 times 3 matrix Z of fracture compliances which contributes to the overall 6times6 compliance matrix S of the fractured solid. For transversely isotropic fractures Z has only two independent elements, but for general fractures all that is known is that Z must be symmetric. This implies that six parameters are needed to describe a fracture system with triclinic behaviour. We find, however, that there is always a coordinate rotation which sets a symmetric pair of the off-diagonal terms of Z to zero, so Z has, in fact, only five independent elements. The zeros of the rotated Z show that particle displacements tangential to the fractures and parallel to the new coordinate axes are decoupled from each other. Despite this decoupling, the medium is still fully triclinic because displacement normal to the fractures still couples with all the other displacements.

    Description: Résumé Quatre sites ont été forés dans le talus volcanoclastique sous-marin de l'île volcanique de Gran Canaria au cours du Leg ODP 157. La sédimentation du talus enregistre l'évolution volcanique de l'île. Les grandes phases éruptives s'expriment clairement par d'importants apports clastiques contemporains au niveau du talus. En revanche, les périodes d'inactivité volcanique se traduisent par des taux de sédimentation très faibles. II est possible ainsi d'établir un découpage volcanostratigraphique à partir des sédiments marins. Abstract Four sites have been drilled in the submarine volcaniclastic apron of the volcanic island of Gran Canaria during the ODP Leg 157. The volcaniclastic submarine apron reflects the volcanological evolution of the island. The main volcanic phases are recorded in the sedimentation by an important contemporaneous clastic influx on the apron. However, periods of volcanic quiescence are characterized by very weak sedimentation rates. Consequently, it is possible to establish a volcanostratigraphy from the sedimentary record of the apron.

    Description: BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to identify molecular alterations associated with disease outcomes for white and black patients with endometrioid endometrial cancer (EEC). METHODS EEC samples from black (n = 17) and white patients (n = 13) were analyzed by proteomics (liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry) and transcriptomics (RNA-seq). Coordinate alterations were validated with RNA-seq data from black (n = 49) and white patients (n = 216). Concordantly altered candidates were further tested for associations with race-specific progression-free survival (PFS) in black (n = 64) or white patients (n = 267) via univariate and multivariate Cox regression modeling and log-rank testing. RESULTS Discovery analyses revealed significantly altered candidate proteins and transcripts between black and white patients, suggesting modulation of tumor cell viability in black patients and cell death signaling in black and white patients. Eighty-nine candidates were validated as altered between these patient cohorts, and a subset significantly correlated with differential PFS. White-specific PFS candidates included serpin family A member 4 (SERPINA4; hazard ratio [HR], 0.89; Wald P value = .02), integrin subunit α3 (ITGA3; HR, 0.76; P = .03), and Bet1 Golgi vesicular membrane trafficking protein like (BET1L; HR, 0.48; P = .04). Black-specific PFS candidates included family with sequence similarity 228 member B (FAM228B; HR, 0.13; P = .001) and HEAT repeat containing 6 (HEATR6; HR, 4.94; P = .047). Several candidates were also associated with overall survival (SERPINA4 and ITGA3) as well as PFS independent of disease stage, grade and myometrial invasion (SERPINA4, BET1L and FAM228B). CONCLUSIONS This study has identified and validated molecular alterations in tumors from black and white EEC patients, including candidates significantly associated with altered disease outcomes within these patient cohorts.
