Description: A Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) analysis was applied to the 1685-2014 winter series of the four DIs (Mellado-Cano et al. 2019) retaining the two first singular vectors (NAODIs and EADIs), which explain 44% and 35% of the total variance, respectively.

Description: Climate variability in the North Atlantic sector is commonly ascribed to the North Atlantic Oscillation. However, recent studies have shown that taking into account the second and third mode of variability (namely the East Atlantic – EA – and the Scandinavian – SCA – patterns) greatly improves our understanding of their controlling mechanisms, as well as their impact on climate. The most commonly used EA and SCA indices span the period from 1950 to present which is too short, for example, to calibrate palaeoclimate records or assess their variability over multi-decadal scales. To tackle this, here, we make available seasonal (3-months) EOF-based indices of NAO, EA and SCA indices covering the period from 1851 to present (Dataset 2); and compare them with their equivalent instrumental indices calculated as standarised sea-level pressure anomalies from Valentia Observatory, Ireland and Bergen Florida, Norway (Dataset 1)

Description: The Azores archipelago is a group of nine oceanic volcanic islands located in the mid-North Atlantic, roughly 1500 km from Europe and 1900 km from America. Lake Azul located in São Miguel island has a surface area of 4.35 km, 28m of maximum depth and is located at 259m above sea level. A coring campaign was conducted in September 2011 using a 60mm diameter UWITEC gravity corer from UWITEC floating platform retrieving a Core AZ11_02 (1.70 m long) located in the deep basin of the lake (27m depth). The core was dated using ¹⁴C and produced a multi-proxy dataset of geochemical and biological analyses that we used to uncover paleoenvironmental changes on Lake Azul in the last 660 years.

Description: Sixteen calcareous nannoplankton taxa and didemnid ascidian spicules were identified throughout MIRA-CP1 core (see Alday et al. 2006 for further details). On the basis of calcareous nannofossil (calcareous nannoplankton and ascidian spicules) assemblages, defined in terms of presence, species abundance, diversity and dominance, the MIRA-CP1 core (ca. 25 m thick) was spreviously divided into five different nannofossil zones 6 (NNZ). NNZ3 (16 m to 4.05 m) is characterized by high and persistent record on nannoliths. This zone can be further divided in two subzones: NNZ3A (16 m to 11.06 m), characterized by the relative dominance of Gephyrocapsa oceanica, Gephyrocapsa muellerae, Umbilicosphaera sibogae, Syracosphaera histrica-pulchra, Coronosphaera mediterranea and a dominance cycle of Coccolithus pelagicus braarudi and Calcidiscus leptoporus; and NNZ3B (11.06 m to 4.05 m), characterized by the relative dominance of Helicosphaera carteri, Braarudosphaera bigelowii together with ascidian spicules and a second dominance cycle of C. pelagicus braarudi and Calcidiscus leptoporus

Description: To evaluate changes in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the Azores, we developed paleoecological and paleoclimate records from Lake Funda on Flores Island that span the last millennium. Vegetation composition (n-alkane average chain length) indicate when human activities began in the catchment area and biogenic silica tracks changes in diatom productivity. In addition, sterol hydrogenation and archaeal lipids (isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers) trace changes in redox conditions and biogeochemical cycles, respectively. Finally, a high-resolution reconstruction using leaf wax hydrogen isotopes records changes in precipitation amount over the last millennium.
