Description: Coccolithophores are globally important marine calcifying phytoplankton. They contribute to the organic carbon pump through the primary production and the ballast of organic matter, and to the carbonate pump through the production of calcium carbonate. Here we compiled all available scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coccolithophore abundance observations. Taxa were standardized following NannoTax3 to a species level where possible. Subspecies (e.a. C. leptoporus subsp. leptoporus and C. leptoporus subsp. quadriperforatus) were grouped as single species. The database contains 2556 abundance observations from 35 different publications. The data span the period of 1993-2017, with observations from all ocean basins and all seasons, and at depths ranging from the surface to 5000 m. We limited our compilation to SEM observations (or observations which further identified samples with SEM) because SEM provides greater detail of coccolithophore diversity than more commonly used polarized light microscopy. Although this limits the number of observations, this allows for a more in-depth analysis of coccolithophore ecology, such as the ecological significance of the coccolithophore life cycle.

Description: Dataset: Coccolithophore birefringence from polarized microscopy
Description: This dataset presents polarized microscopy-derived concentration data for coccolithophores and detached coccoliths in samples collected from stations in the Northwest Atlantic during R/V Endeavor cruise EN616 in July 2018. Counts are based on image analysis of dark-field, cross-polarized views of filtered particulate matter. These counts take advantage of the birefringence property of calcium carbonate (particulate inorganic carbon) that it rotates the plane of linearly polarized incident light by 90 degrees. Incident light directed upwards, towards the microscope slide, is polarized 90 degrees with a linear polarizer. Particles are viewed from above the slide, through a second, linear polarizer filter held between the microscope stage and the camera which only accepts light that is polarized orthogonal to the lower polarizer. Calcium carbonate particles in the beam appear as bright dots of light. Image analysis software then analyzes the pattern of birefringence and enumerates only those particles with size and shape of coccolithophores or detached coccoliths. Description: Despite the progress in the international and regional governance efforts at the level of climate change, ocean acidification (OA) remains a global problem with profoundly negative environmental, social, and economical consequences. This requires extensive mitigation and adaptation effective strategies that are hindered by current shortcomings of governance. This multidisciplinary chapter investigates the risks of ocean acidification (OA) for aquaculture and fisheries in the Mediterranean Sea and its sub-basins and the role of regional adaptive governance to tackle the problem. The identified risks are based on the biological sensitivities of the most important aquaculture species and biogenic habitats and their exposure to the current and future predicted (2100) RCP 8.5 conditions. To link OA exposure and biological sensitivity, we produced spatially resolved and depth-related pH and aragonite saturation state exposure maps and overlaid these with the existing aquaculture industry in the coastal waters of the Mediterranean basin to demonstrate potential risk for the aquaculture in the future. We also identified fisheries’ vulnerability through the indirect effects of OA on highly sensitive biogenic habitats that serve as nursery and spawning areas, showing that some of the biogenic habitats are already affected locally under existing OA conditions and will be more severely impacted across the entire Mediterranean basin under 2100 scenarios. This provided a regional vulnerability assessment of OA hotspots, risks and gaps that created the baseline for discussing the importance of adaptive governance and recommendations for future OA mitigation/adaptation strategies. By understanding the risks under future OA scenarios and reinforcing the adaptability of the governance system at the science-policy interface, best informed, “situated” management response capability can be optimised to sustain ecosystem services.

Description: Dataset: Coccolithophore survival in darkness
Description: Results for batch growth experiments that lasted for 30 days on two species, Cruciplacolithus neohelis (McIntyre & Bé) Reinhardt strain CCMP298 and Chrysotila carterae (Braarud & Fagerland) Andersen, Kim, Tittley & Yoon (NCMA lists the strain as Pleurochrysis carterae) strain CCMP3337, grown in darkness with the addition of acetate, mannitol, and glycerol in final concentrations of 10, 30, 100, 300 and 1000 µmol l−1. We performed these experiments to determine whether coccolithophores (CCMP298 and CCMP3337) can sustain themselves in darkness by using organic compounds as energy and/or carbon sources.
