    Notes: Abstract Thirty-seven selected earthquakes which occurred in Phlegraean Fields from April to December 1983 are investigated from the focal mechanism point of view in order to attempt a preliminary representation of the stress pattern in the area. From 37 earthquakes, 15 reliable solutions were obtained. Ten mechanisms for events located around the Solfatara crater are of tensional type; 2 located in the Gulf of Pozzuoli seem to be compressive. No predominant orientation ofP andT axes seem to occur. Evidently, a more accurate analysis with a greater number of data — in particular for compressive events — is necessary in order to resolve a detailed map of stress pattern.

    Description: On March 19, 1914 Giuseppe Mercalli, a seismologist and volcanologist, well-known around the world for the Intensity scale of earthquakes bearing his name, died tragically. A hundred years after, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) has promoted a variety of activities and cultural events that will take place under the Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic within a year, the so called “Anno Mercalliano” (the Year of Mercalli). The opening ceremony took place in Naples, Italy, on March 19, 2014, in the Convitto Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele II. A scientific conference was held with the participation of experts from INGV and the university of Milano – Bicocca, and presentations of students. On that day the exhibition entitled “I luoghi di Mercalli” (Mercalli's places) was also inaugurated, at the presence of local authorities. The exhibition, organized by INGV, was realized in collaboration with the high school Vittorio Emanuele II, where Mercalli has been teaching for 19 years, and the Università degli Studi Suor Orsola Benincasa, where he was professor of natural sciences. A biographical and geographical description of the places where Mercalli operated introduces the exhibition, which is organized in sections: - Mercalli educator (he taught at high schools in Reggio Calabria and Naples); - Mercalli volcanologist (Mercalli studied Vesuvius volcanic activity for more than twenty years, he was a scientific witness of the Vesuvius 1906 eruption, and of the eruptions occurred at Vulcano (1888-90) and Stromboli (1891) islands. - Mercalli seismologist (Mercalli Intensity scale definition, based on his experience as witness of catastrophic earthquakes, such as Casamicciola in 1883 and Messina in 1908). Another section deals with the Vesuvius Observatory, directed by Mercalli between 1911 and 1914, and the description of the three active volcanoes of the Campania region (Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei and Ischia island), which have been the subject of studies by the well-known scientist. The exhibition is enriched by documents, manuscripts, photos and field notebooks of Mercalli. It is not intended to be only a celebratory exhibition; rather it is designed as a tool for dissemination of scientific culture and to raise awareness about seismic and volcanic hazards. In the exhibition path a continuous thread between the figure of Mercalli as a researcher and the role of an Earth Science researcher today is highlighted, pointing to the development of scientific knowledge in the past century. The goal is to improve the capability of learning from the disasters occurred in the past to implement preventive actions to safely deal with future events. The exhibition is travelling and will be provided on request to institutions and schools.

    Description: On May 20 2012 a Ml 5.9 seismic event hit the Emilia Po Plain area (northern Italy) triggering an intense earthquake activity along a broad area of the Plain. Nine days later, on May 29 a Ml 5.8 event occurred roughly 10 km to the SW of the first main shock; these events caused 26 victims and several injured and damages. The aftershock area extended for more than 50 km, in WNW-ESE direction, including five major aftershocks with 5.1≤Ml≤5.3 and more than two thousands of minor events. In general, the seismic sequence was confined in the upper 10 km of depth (ISIDe, http://iside.rm.ingv.it/). The focal mechanisms calculated for the main events and also for several M〉4.5 aftershocks are almost all consistent with a compression (P-axes) N-S oriented due to thrust fault mechanisms. The two nodal planes, both E-W oriented, show a 40° southward and 60-70° northward dipping plane (QRCMT, Quick Regional Moment Tensors, http://autorcmt.bo.ingv.it/quicks.html), connected with the compressional regime of the area. From a tectonic point of view, the active Apennine thrust fronts, buried under the Po Plain Plio-Quaternary sediments, locally consist of three N-verging arcs. The most external structures, the active Ferrara and Mirandola thrusts and folds are responsible for the Emilia Romagna 2012 earthquake sequence. Just after the 20th May seismic event, the EMERGEO Working Group was active in surveying the epicentral area searching for coseismic geological effects. The survey lasted one month, involving about thirty researchers and technicians of the INGV in field and aerial investigations. Simultaneously, a laboratory-working group gathered, organized and interpreted the observations, processing them in the EMERGEO Information System (siE), on a GIS environment. The most common coseismic effects are: 1) liquefactions related to overpressure of aquifers hosted in buried and confined sand layers, occurring both as single cones or through several aligned vents forming coalescent sand blows; 2) extensional fractures with small vertical throws, apparently organized in an en-echelon pattern, observed mainly in the eastern sector and in the central area; 3) liquefactions directly associable to fractures where huge amounts of liquefied sand and fine sand was ejected from fractures tens of meters long. The dip of the fault plane, the depth of the main shock and the magnitude indeed did not induce any primary rupture at the surface.

    Description: A considerable rise in temperature in the fumarolic gases, observed at Vulcano throughout 1988, was not accompanied by correlated geophysical markers indicating clear renewal of the volcanic activity Microseismicity remained at very low energy levels and was monitored during two months by use of a temporary array of three-component digital stations, in addition to the permanent seismic network of the Aeolian Islands. Comparison of the seismic activity recorded dunng thls experiment with the seismicity detected during a previous survey carried out in 1987, suggests that no substantial changes occurred in both the hypocentral volumes and energy release. Relocation of the events within a three-dimensionally heterogeneous medium, observation of waveforms similarities and kinematic analysis for reconnalssance of the seismic phases allow to draw a preliminary quantitative picture of the seismic behaviour of the volcanic field during the survelllance period.

    Description: Alla fine degli anni '80 furono effettuate numerose indagini DSS e WARR nell'area campana con l'obiettivo di investigarne la struttura crostale, in particolare quella dell'area vulcanica costiera, impostata nella zona di transizione tra il bacino tirrenico e la catena appenninica. Le geometrie punto di scoppio - punti di registrazione, lineari e a offset costante, furono scelte per ottenere informazioni sulla distribuzione delle velocità sismiche e sulla geometria delle principali discontinuità crostali. In questo lavoro presentiamo i risultati della modellazione dinamica (gaussian-bean dynamic ray-tracing) dei profili PP (Tirreno-Campi Flegrei), PV (Tirreno-Vesuvio), PB (Capri-Penisola Sorrentina) e V3 (Penisola Sorrentina-Vesuvio)e del profilo a offset costante Fan C-B.

    Description: The aim of this study is a critical revision of historical and recent seismicity of the Salento peninsula (Apulia, Southern Italy), offering an updated evaluation of its seismic hazard currently underestimated. This area is actually included in the least dangerous IV category of the Italian seismic classification. The Salento Peninsula was struck by the February 20, 1743 earthquake, considered as the strongest seismic event of this area. The reassessment of both the macroseismic effects on man-made structures, and the triggered effects in the natural environment has been carried out on the basis of archival documents and recent literature, according to the MCS and the ESI 2007 scale. The main result of our study has been the re-evaluation of the maximum intensity (Imax=XMCS) of the 1743 earthquake, besides new intensity values for some localities along the Apulian coasts.

    Description: The area of the Salento peninsula (Apulia, Southern Italy) is considered the stable foreland of the Southern Apennines chain (Cinque et al., 1993), although it has been hit by several low energy and a few high energy earthquakes over the last centuries. The aim of this study is a critical revision of the historical and recent seismicity of the Salento peninsula and surrounding seismogenetic areas, for re-evaluating the macroseismic effects in MCS scale and ground effects in natural environment, according to the ESI 2007 scale (Michetti et al., 2007; Guerrieri et al., 2012). In particular, the February 20, 1743 earthquake, the strongest of the area, was reviewed and new MCS intensity values were attributed to some localities. Moreover we have evaluated the most important effects on land in the Salento area due to the strong earthquakes of Northern Apulia, Southern Apennines, Adriatic and Ionian sea, Albania and Greece. The use of both traditional MCS macroseismic intensity scale and the ESI 2007 scale gives a more accurate image of the earthquake (Dengler and McPherson, 1993; Porfido et al., 2007; Serva et al., 2007) and allowed us to better constrain the seismic hazard assessment in the Salento peninsula.
