Notes: We report on new developments in the long-core measurement techniques using u channels in connection with new small-access cryogenic magnetometers. With these new instruments, u-channel samples allow us to measure a wide range of magnetic parameters along entire-core length with a spatial resolution and accuracy virtually equivalent to that obtained using discrete cubic samples. An additional advantage is that the sediment disturbance when sampling is significantly less when using u channels. We present comparisons of results from both continuous and discrete measurements and examine the effectiveness of minimal deconvolution using various techniques. Examples of continuous measurements of low-field susceptibility, NRM, ARM, IRM, Hrc from North Atlantic deep-sea cores show that it is possible to generate logs of combination of parameters related to rock-magnetic characteristics of the sediments useful in palaeoceanography. In particular, the continuous method allows us to rapidly detect core regions with fast changing magnetic parameters useful for correlation between cores and also for understanding changes in palaeo-environmental conditions. The fast scan also allows us to detect regions of the core where the rock magnetic parameters are suitable (or not suitable) for palaeomagnetic studies related to changes in the geomagnetic field such as the relative changes in palaeointensity.

Notes: Repolarization Alternans in Ischemia. Introduction: A canine model of reversible ischemia was used to measure the magnitude and transmural distribution of repolarization alternans. Methods and Results: Twenty-four multielectrode needles were inserted into a reversibly ischemic region created by 8 minutes of coronary occlusion. One hundred ninety-two unipolar electrograms were simultaneously recorded at 1-minute intervals for 8 minutes of ischemia and 3 minutes of reflow recovery. Beat-to-beat repolarization alternans was quantified for all electrograms using the standard deviation of QRST integrals. When alternans from animals that fibrillated was compared with alternans from animals that did not, the magnitude of alternans in the fibrillation group was an average standard deviation of 1125 ± 99.7 mV-msec at the time of fibrillation and 409 ± 183 mV-msec at 8 minutes of ischemia in the animals that did not fibrillate. The increase in alternans occurred mainly in the mid-myocardial and epicardial regions in the animals that fibrillated. QRS morphology of sequential electrograms did not differ in beat-to-beat comparison, suggesting that repolarization alternans measured was not due to alternating conduction block in the region of reversible ischemia. Conclusion: During acute ischemia, the magnitude and distribution of repolarization alternans are greater and differ in hearts that experience ventricular fibrillation. This observation may have clinical utility in arrhythmia prediction. It also is consistent with the possibility there may be multiple mechanisms for repolarization alternans.

Notes: [Auszug] Attempts to explain these phenomena include the suggestion that the Moon had, early in its history, a regenerative dynamo like the Earth's, so that the magnetisation now observed was acquired in its field2. It has also been proposed that the Moon was exposed to an external field in which the ...

Notes: Abstract Quantitative photoacoustic and transmission infrared spectroscopy have been compared for a highly overlapped three component mixture with concentrations varying from 0 to 60%. A partial leastsquares model has been employed for the quantitative analysis. High correlation coefficients were obtained for both the transmission and photoacoustic model.

Notes: Abstract FT-IR spectrometers designed for laboratory operation are generally not suited for plant production areas where ambient temperatures often exceed 120° F and noise levels are extremely high. The Nicolet Pro-IR 5 process FT-IR spectrometer can operate in hostile environments over the spectral range from 10 000 to 250 wavenumbers. We have evaluated the performance of this system using a set of commercial detergent samples and a wide range of gas mixtures. The detergent samples were simultaneously analyzed for twelve components using a sophisticated partial least-squares statistical analysis software package. The concentrations ranged from 0.1 to over 50 wt.-%, with water being the major component. A comparison will be made between the NIR and MIR results using flow-through ATR (attenuated total reflectance) and transmission cells.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR - Valet et al.1 concluded that there is no statistical evidence for a preferred sector of longitude in the distribution of mean virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) paths during reversals. This contradicts the earlier suggestion that the transitional field VGPs have a tendency to follow the ...

Notes: [Auszug] ROBERT Butler's aim of showing how palaeomagnetism works is certainly ful-filled by this excellent book, which provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of the subject with plenty of examples of practical applications to tec-tonics and geochronology. As with all authors of books on ...
