    Notes: Summary IfXiphophorus helleri males are kept in social isolation for 14–56 days, the fights for rank order position showed an increasing duration and intensity. These results support the idea of a spontaneous accumulation of attack readiness and are in contrast to the results in cichlid fishes. It is supposed that the different influence of social isolation to aggressive behaviour corresponds to different types of social organisation anp ecological adaptations.

    Notes: Summary A previous hypothesis which we originally based on standardized mirror tests was examined. It stated that subordinate males from socially stabilized groups, when confronted with a strange male of similar fighting ability, tend to take the offensive; in contrast, dominant males tend to wait and see and to increase their aggressiveness only as far as necessary to counter the aggressive actions of the opponent. 30 highly escalating fights between well matched opponents, either with different or with the same prior rank-order experience, were recorded on video tape and then analysed in detail. Rank-order experience affected neither the escalation level nor the outcome of the fights. However, in the first nonescalated stage of the fights all measures of unilateral aggressive actions were higher in the omega than in the alpha males. This is contrary to expectations based on the theory of social conditioning; nor can it yet be explained by game-theory models. We then discuss why it should pay subordinates to be more offensive and to show higher levels of unilateral aggression than dominants. Some current aspects of game theory are supported by our data: (1) Threat display is a poor predictor of attack and fleeing, and simply informs the opponent that the threatening individual will probably just stay and avoid further escalations. (2) Relative fighting ability is demonstrated during highly-escalated fighting by delivering Fin Grips, the most effective and costly attack pattern. The high energetic costs of Fin Grips can be compensated by reducing the rate of Biting. (3) Probably, the combatants did not transfer information about their intentions, i.e. they concealed their intentions as to what they were going to do next. Contrary to the predictions of game theory, winners and losers showed some differences in Pecking early in the nonescalated stage of the fights, the prospective losers exhibiting more Pecking than the winners.

    Notes: Abstract Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is a well-established technique that permits rapid detection of stable and radioactive nuclides. Its resolving mass power provides an efficient analytical method and, in particular, it makes possible accurate isotopic ratio determination. Tests were carried out to evaluate the performance of this technique for the assessment of trace concentrations of uranium and plutonium in urine samples prepared in thin sources. Special attention has been paid to the preparation of the specimens which represents a critical step for the employment of this technique due to the erosion process used by SIMS. Fixation of the matrix in Polypyrrole films have been proved to be suitable. Present results show that concentrations in the order of 10−10 g·1−1 of238U (10−6 Bq·1−1) and 10−11 g·1−1 of239Pu (10−2 Bq·1−1) can be rapidly measured.

    Notes: Abstract Although much progress was made by using high purity gemanium detectors for direct measurement of239Pu in man, the improvement of lung spectroscopy sensitivity remains a challenge. Previous work showed that passivated implanted planar silicon detectors could provide an alternative by combining high-energy resolution at room temperature and planar geometry with large detection arrays. This paper reports on the status of this research based on the characterisation of 3×3 cm2 and 6×3 cm2 strip silicon detectors. Furthemore, the possibility to apply such detectors towards other monitoring problems for accidental situations such as the direct measurement of small contaminated surfaces was investigated.

    Description: In the last decades, selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) has become a real alternative in the treatment of unresectable hepatic cancers. In practice, the activity prescription is limited by the irradiation of organs at risk (OAR), such as the lungs and nontumoral liver (NTL). Its clinical implementation is therefore highly dependent on dosimetry. In that context, a 3-dimensional personalized dosimetry technique—personalized Monte Carlo dosimetry (PMCD)—based on patient-specific data and Monte Carlo calculations was developed and evaluated retrospectively on clinical data. Methods: The PMCD method was evaluated with data from technetium human albumin macroaggregates ( 99m Tc-MAA) evaluations of 10 patients treated for hepatic metastases. Region-of-interest outlines were drawn on CT images to create patient-specific voxel phantoms using the OEDIPE software. Normalized 3-dimensional matrices of cumulated activity were generated from 99m Tc-SPECT data. Absorbed doses at the voxel scale were then obtained with the MCNPX Monte Carlo code. The maximum-injectable activity (MIA) for tolerance criteria based on either OAR mean absorbed doses (D mean ) or OAR dose-volume histograms (DVHs) was determined using OEDIPE. Those MIAs were compared with the one recommended by the partition model (PM) with D mean tolerance criteria. Finally, OEDIPE was used to evaluate the absorbed doses delivered if those activities were injected to the patient and to generate the corresponding isodose curves and DVHs. Results: The MIA recommended using D mean tolerance criteria is, in average, 27% higher with the PMCD method than with the PM. If tolerance criteria based on DVHs are used along with the PMCD, an increase of at least 40% of the MIA is conceivable, compared with the PM. For MIAs calculated with the PMCD, D mean delivered to tumoral liver (TL) ranged from 19.5 to 118 Gy for D mean tolerance criteria whereas they ranged from 26.6 to 918 Gy with DVH tolerance criteria. Thus, using the PMCD method, which accounts for fixation heterogeneities, higher doses can be delivered to TL. Finally, absorbed doses to the lungs are not the limiting criterion for activity prescription. However, D mean to the lungs can reach 15.0 Gy. Conclusion: Besides its feasibility and applicability in clinical routine, the interest for treatment optimization of a personalized Monte Carlo dosimetry in the context of SIRT was confirmed in this study.

    Description: Elastic waves are guided along finite structures such as cylinders, plates, or rods through reflection, refraction, and mode conversion at the interfaces. Such wave propagation is ubiquitous in the world around us, and studies of elastic waveguides first emerged in the later part of the 19th century. Early work on elastic waveguides revealed the presence of backward propagating waves, in which the phase velocity and group velocity are anti-parallel. While backward wave propagation exists naturally in very simple finite elastic media, there has been remarkably little attention paid to this phenomenon. Here we report the development of a tunable acoustic lens in an isotropic elastic plate showing negative refraction over a finite acoustic frequency bandwidth. As compared to engineered acoustic materials such as phononic crystals and metamaterials, the design of the acoustic lens is very simple, with negative refraction obtained through thickness changes rather than internal periodicity or sub-wavelength resonant structures. A new class of acoustic devices, including resonators, filters, lenses, and cloaks, may be possible through topography optimization of elastic waveguide structures to exploit the unique properties of backward waves.
