    Notes: We measured the static error rate of a high-Tc superconductor dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), which, in the form as a storage loop for single flux quanta, is a basic element of rapid single flux quantum circuits. Using high-Tc multilayer bicrystal technology, we fabricated a stacked dc SQUID pair, one SQUID serving as the storage loop, the other one as the readout device. The escape rate of a stored flux quantum was measured as a function of the bias current at a temperature of 28 K. The measured error rates were in good agreement with a model calculation based on thermally activated barrier crossing. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have fabricated YBa2Cu3O7−δ/PrBa2Cu3O7−δ/YBa2Cu3O7−δ ramp-type Josephson junctions with high characteristic voltage Vc=IcRn at a temperature of 77 K. A microshadow mask technique was used to grow completely in situ a ramp-type multilayer structure. Junctions with barrier thicknesses of about 13 and 45 nm were characterized. Junctions with a thicker barrier exhibited supercurrent up to 80 K and showed a resistively shunted-junction-like current voltage characteristics with a Vc as high as ∼1.5 mV at 77 K and 16 mV at 15 K. Junctions with a thinner barrier worked up to 90 K and exhibited the ac Josephson effect at 77 K under 8.9 GHz microwave radiation. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report Josephson junctions in YBa2Cu3O7−δ films, fabricated by oxygen irradiation through a 50 nm wide slit in an implantation mask. After annealing the irradiated microbridges at 500 °C in an oxygen atmosphere, this process creates a homogeneous barrier region with a reduced but finite transition temperature, allowing Josephson coupling in a temperature window of ≤15 K. Over the entire temperature range of Josephson coupling these junctions show resistively shunted junction behavior. The exponential dependence of the critical current on temperature is in good agreement with conventional superconductor–normal–superconductor proximity effect theory. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The application of high temperature superconductor (HTS) Josephson junctions in digital rapid single flux quantum circuits requires a careful study of the influence of thermal noise on the bit error rate (BER). We have determined experimentally, for the first time, the BER of a HTS rapid single flux quantum circuit. A comparator, formed by two Josephson junctions, was integrated in a Josephson transmission line ring oscillator, allowing us to perform high speed testing of the comparator at GHz frequencies. For fabrication, focused-electron-beam-irradiated junctions have been used because of their small parameter spread and excellent alignment possibilities. A BER of less than 10−11 was obtained at 39 K. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Konstruktionsmerkmale von Endoprothesen aus Al2O3 werden vorgestellt. Die Befestigung am langen Röhrenknochen erfolgt mittels einer Kegelhülsenverbindung. Diese Prothesen-Knochenverbindung wurde mechanischen Festigkeitsprüfungen unterworfen and im Tierexperiment überprüft. Die Ergebnisse ermutigten zur klinischen Anwendung am Tumorpatienten, die an Hand verschiedener Fälle demonstriert wird. Auf die Möglichkeit, auch große Defekte zu überbrücken, wird hingewiesen.
    Notes: Summary Design characteristics of endoprostheses made of alumina are discussed. Fixation of implants on long bones is achieved by means of a conical sleeve. The bonding of bones to implants has been proved tested mechanically and in animal experiments. Good results have led to the use of bioceramic endoprostheses in tumor patients. Several implantations are shown. This technique makes it possible to bridge large defects.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The author surveys the sympathomimetic appetite inhibitors. He discusses obesity, its dangers, and the possibilities of treatment. He enumerates the substances used for the medical treatment of adiposity. Using the history of benzedrine (d,l-amphetamine) as a guide, he describes the pharmacological effects of this prototype of anorexigenic substances. Recent developments in the field of appetite inhibitors are explained using the molecular structure of benzedrine as an example. He further shows that most of these substances derive chemically in a more or less distinct manner from this prototype and that they are basically similar in pharmacological action. He discusses finally the problem of misuse.
    Abstract: Résumé L'auteur donne un résumé de l'emploi des sympathicomimétiques en tant que freinateurs de l'appétit. D'abord, il discute de l'obésité, des dangers qu'elle présente, et des possibilités de son traitement. Il fait le récit des produits employés en tant qu'adjuvants dans la thérapeutique de l'obésité. L'action pharmacologique du prototype des corps anorexigènes, soit de la d,l-amphétamine, est expliquée dans le cadre de l'histoire de cette substance. De nouveaux corps anorexigènes sont comparés, quant à leur formule développée, à la molécule de la d,l-amphétamine. L'on démontre qu'il existe un rapport plus ou moins apparent entre le «prototype» et les corps plus récents, aussi en ce qui concerne le principe de leur action pharmacologique. Pour terminer, l'on effleure le problème posé par l'abus de ces corps.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Der Autor bringt eine Übersicht über die sympathomimetischen Appetitzügler. Er bespricht zunächst die Fettsucht, ihre Gefahren und ihre Behandlungsmöglichkeiten. Die medikamentösen Hilfsmittel der Adipositas-Therapie werden genannt. An der Geschichte des Benzedrins werden die pharmakologischen Wirkungen dieses Prototyps der anorexigenen Substanzen beschrieben. Die Neuentwicklungen auf dem Gebiet der Appetitzügler werden an Hand des Benzedrinmoleküls erklärt. Es wird gezeigt, daß sie sich chemisch mehr oder weniger deutlich vom Prototyp ableiten und auch pharmakologisch im Prinzip ähnlich sind. Zum Schluß wird noch kurz auf das Problem des Mißbrauches eingegangen.

    Notes: Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate whether mild neurological symptoms suggestive of neuropsychiatric involvement may be associated with cerebral perfusion defects as detected by functional brain imaging with 99m-Tc-HMPAO-SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography). SPECT analysis for the early detection of central nervous system (CNS) involvement was evaluated in 40 consecutive patients with systemic vasculitis or with Sneddon's syndrome. Of these, 18 patients showed overt neuropsychiatric symptoms, so-called major symptoms (e.g. motoric or sensible defects); 6 had mild symptoms like headache or cognitive disorders, so-called minor symptoms; 16 patients did not present with any of these symptoms. SPECT abnormalities were detected in 16 of the 18 patients with overt neuropsychiatric symptoms (89%). Five of the 6 patients with minor symptoms (83%) and 5 of the 16 patients without neurological symptoms (31 %) also had SPECT abnormalities. There was no relation to disease activity or duration. We concluded that the high sensitivity of SPECT (87.5%) in detecting perfusion abnormalities among the evaluated group of patients indicates its suitability for early diagnosis of vasculitic CNS involvement.
