    Notes: A composite titanium/silicone rubber clip has been developed for female sterilization. The 12–7 mm long metal clip is lined with silicone rubber and is bent round the Fallopian tube by means of an applicator that can be used laparoscopically. As tubal necrosis occurs, the rubber expands to keep the lumen blocked. The tube eventually divides and the stumps heal, closed. Since the Mark 3 version of the clip was introduced, over 5700 women in several countries have been sterilized. The first 540 British women who were folio wed-up for five to 17 months experienced one method failure (ectopic) and two operator failures, a total failure rate of 5·5/ 1000. Clip-related complications were minimal and long-term sequelae were comparable to tubal ligation. The clip causes minimal destruction but still seems effective for tubal occlusion and it can accommodate thick tubes.

    Notes: Abstract The relationship between host stage selection and foraging behaviour of Pholetesor bicolor Nees (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a larval parasitoid of Phyllonorycter spp. (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), was investigated under laboratory conditions. The endophytic host develops through two larval stages with different feeding habits, accordingly named sap- and tissue-feeders. The parasitoid was able to find and parasitise both larval stages, even though it is most successful in parasitising the sap-feeder stage. The influence of experience in the parasitoid's searching behaviour was observed in a choice bioassay. Searching activity increased when either contact experience with the sap- or the tissue-feeder host was given. Furthermore, the ability of the parasitoid to locate a sap- or a tissue-feeder infested plant was influenced by the type of experience given prior to the bioassay. Naive females were less active, and were observed with equal frequency on sap-feeder, tissue-feeder and non-infested plants. In contrast, females that were given previous contact experience with sap-feeders (i.e., the host stage which provided the most successful parasitism) were observed foraging more often on plants infested by the sap-feeders, than on those infested by tissue-feeders or on non-infested plants. Experience with a tissue-feeder host had no detectable effect on host stage location and only enhanced P. bicolor's foraging activity. The advantages of learning in this tritrophic system are discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Une méthode de laboratoire et de plein champ a été établie pour mesurer la prise d'envol chezTrichogramma brassicae Bezdenko (Hymenoptera, Trichogrammatidae) dans le but de développer un procédé simple, peu coûteux et rapide qui servirait aux producteurs deTrichogramma pour contrôler la performance de vol du parasitoïde. La prise d'envol de quatre souches deT. brassicae, élevées sur œufs d'Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, a été comparée. Deux souches (F2 et F39/42) n'ont jamais été soumises au stockage à basse température. Elles ont été élevées pendant deux et 39 à 42 générations uniquement sur l'hôte de substitution,E. kuehniella, c'est-à-dire sans passage sur l'hôte naturel,Ostrinia nubilalis Huebner. Une souche, élevée pendant six générations surE. kuehniella a été stockée en conditions de diapause pendant six mois. La quatrième souche était un produit commericial dont les conditions de production et de stockage ne sont pas connues en détail. Des différences nettes de l'activité de vol on été observées entre les quatre souches. La souche F2 et le produit commercial ont montré une activité de vol plus élevée en laboratoire que les deux autres souches. Le même résultat, bien qu'un peu moins accentué, a été obtenu en plein champ. Nous concluons que la méthode de laboratoire est un moyen simple, rapide et peu coûteux pour mesurer l'activité de vol de ce parasitoïde. La méthode de plein champ, étant plus laborieuse, servirait surtout aux vérifications des résultats de laboratoire.
    Notes: Abstract A laboratory and a field test for flight initiation ofTrichogramma brassicae Bezdenko (Hymenoptera, Trichogrammatidae) (synonymous toT. maidis Pintureau et Voegele) were developed with the aim to establish a simple, cheap and quick flight quality control method forTrichogramma producers. The flight quality of four strains ofT. brassicae reared onEphestia kuehniella Zeller eggs were compared. The material tested consisted of four strains: two strains reared for two (F2) and 39 to 42 (F39–42) generations onE. kuehniella eggs without storage treatment, a diapause strain reared six generations (F6) onE. kuehniella eggs and a commercial strain also reared onE. kuehniella eggs whose production and storage conditions were unknown. Clear differences in flight activity among strains were observed. Both, the F2 and commercial strain showed significantly better flight activity under laboratory conditions compared to the other strains. Flight field cage experiments were made for comparison between field and laboratory results. Similar differences among strains in field cage experiments were observed when compared to laboratory tests.

    Description: An interlaboratory study of Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios in three commercially available carbonate reference materials (BAM RS3, CMSI 1767, and ECRM 752-1) was performed with the participation of 25 laboratories that determine foraminiferal Mg/Ca ratios worldwide. These reference materials containing Mg/Ca in the range of foraminiferal calcite (0.8 mmol/mol to 6 mmol/mol) were circulated with a dissolution protocol for analysis. Participants were asked to make replicate dissolutions of the powdered samples and to analyze them using the instruments and calibration standards routinely used in their laboratories. Statistical analysis was performed in accordance with the International Standardization Organization standard 5725, which is based on the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique. Repeatability (RSDr%), an indicator of intralaboratory precision, for Mg/Ca determinations in solutions after centrifuging increased with decreasing Mg/Ca, ranging from 0.78% at Mg/Ca = 5.56 mmol/mol to 1.15% at Mg/Ca = 0.79 mmol/mol. Reproducibility (RSDR%), an indicator of the interlaboratory method precision, for Mg/Ca determinations in centrifuged solutions was noticeably worse than repeatability, ranging from 4.5% at Mg/Ca = 5.56 mmol/mol to 8.7% at Mg/Ca = 0.79 mmol/mol. Results of this study show that interlaboratory variability is dominated by inconsistencies among instrument calibrations and highlight the need to improve interlaboratory compatibility. Additionally, the study confirmed the suitability of these solid standards as reference materials for foraminiferal Mg/Ca (and Sr/Ca) determinations, provided that appropriate procedures are adopted to minimize and to monitor possible contamination from silicate mineral phases.

    Description: We use a suite of 31 simulated galaxies drawn from the MaGICC project to investigate the effects of baryonic feedback on the density profiles of dark matter haloes. The sample covers a wide mass range: 9.4 10 9  〈  M halo / M  〈 7.8 10 11 , hosting galaxies with stellar masses in the range 5.0 10 5  〈  M * / M  〈 8.3 10 10 , i.e. from dwarf to L*. The galaxies are simulated with blastwave supernova feedback and, for some of them, an additional source of energy from massive stars is included. Within this feedback scheme we vary several parameters, such as the initial mass function, the density threshold for star formation, and energy from supernovae and massive stars. The main result is a clear dependence of the inner slope of the dark matter density profile, α in    r α , on the stellar-to-halo mass ratio, M * / M halo . This relation is independent of the particular choice of parameters within our stellar feedback scheme, allowing a prediction for cusp versus core formation. When M * / M halo is low, 0.01 per cent, energy from stellar feedback is insufficient to significantly alter the inner dark matter density, and the galaxy retains a cuspy profile. At higher stellar-to-halo mass ratios, feedback drives the expansion of the dark matter and generates cored profiles. The flattest profiles form where M * / M halo  ~ 0.5 per cent. Above this ratio, stars formed in the central regions deepen the gravitational potential enough to oppose the supernova-driven expansion process, resulting in cuspier profiles. Combining the dependence of α on M * / M halo with the empirical abundance matching relation between M * and M halo provides a prediction for how α varies as a function of stellar mass. Further, using the Tully–Fisher relation allows a prediction for the dependence of the dark matter inner slope on the observed rotation velocity of galaxies. The most cored galaxies are expected to have V rot  ~ 50 km s –1 , with α decreasing for more massive disc galaxies: spirals with V rot  ~ 150 km s –1 have central slopes α ≤ –0.8, approaching again the Navarro–Frenk–White profile. This novel prediction for the dependence of α on disc galaxy mass can be tested using observational data sets and can be applied to theoretical modelling of mass profiles and populations of disc galaxies.
