    Description: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Coastal Change Analysis Programl (C-CAP) is developinga nationally standardized database on landcover and habitat change in the coastal regions of the United States. C-CAP is part of the Estuarine Habitat Program (EHP) of NOAA's Coastal Ocean Program (COP). C-CAP inventories coastal submersed habitats, wetland habitats, and adjacent uplands and monitors changes in these habitats on a one- to five-year cycle. This type of information and frequency of detection are required to improve scientific understanding of the linkages of coastal and submersed wetland habitats with adjacent uplands and with the distribution, abundance,and health of living marine resources. The monitoringcycle will vary according to the rate and magnitude ofchange in each geographic region. Satellite imagery(primarily Landsat Thematic Mapper), aerial photography,and field data are interpreted, classified, analyzed,and integrated with other digital data in a geographicinformation system (GIS). The resulting landcoverchange databases are disseminated in digital formfor use by anyone wishing to conduct geographic analysisin the completed regions. C-CAP spatial information on coastal change will be input to EHP conceptual and predictive models to support coastal resource policy planning and analysis. CCAP products will include 1) spatially registered digital databases and images, 2) tabular summaries by state, county, and hydrologic unit, and 3) documentation. Aggregations to larger areas (representing habitats, wildlife refuges, or management districts) will be provided on a case-by-case basis. Ongoing C-CAP research will continue to explore techniques for remote determination of biomass, productivity, and functional status of wetlands and will evaluate new technologies (e.g. remote sensor systems, global positioning systems, image processing algorithms) as they become available. Selected hardcopy land-cover change maps will be produced at local (1:24,000) to regional scales (1:500,000) for distribution. Digital land-cover change data will be provided to users for the cost of reproduction.Much of the guidance contained in this document was developed through a series of professional workshopsand interagency meetings that focused on a) coastal wetlands and uplands; b) coastal submersed habitat including aquatic beds; c) user needs; d) regionalissues; e) classification schemes; f) change detectiontechniques; and g) data quality. Invited participantsincluded technical and regional experts and representativesof key State and Federal organizations. Coastal habitat managers and researchers were given an opportunity for review and comment. This document summarizes C-CAP protocols and procedures that are to be used by scientists throughout the United States to develop consistent and reliable coastal change information for input to the C-CAP nationwide database. It also provides useful guidelines for contributors working on related projects. It is considered a working document subject to periodic review and revision.(PDF file contains 104 pages.)

    Notes: Until recently the Younger Dryas cooling event was thought to be restricted to the North Atlantic region. However, preliminary evidence based on magnetic susceptibility and stable isotope data from Lake Hetongchahannor, a hypersaline alkaline lake in Inner Mongolia indicates that this event is observed in NE Asia. In addition we find indications of wetter climatic conditions between 9000 and 6000 yr BP, possibly due to increased monsoon activity, followed by a progressive aridification towards the present time.

    Notes: The Dumfries and Galloway Regional Council's largely rural statutory area extends to 6370 km2, with a population of 146 000. During 1988 the Council, mindful of impending legislation likely to affect existing sludge disposal outlets, particularly those to agricultural land, commissioned a detailed study into all aspects of sewage sludge production, treatment, storage and disposal. The prime aim of the study was the production of a regional sludge disposal strategy. Consideration was given to five different options of sludge disposal.

The Scheme began in 1991 and is in its fifth year of operation.     Notes: Abstract Isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) acquisition and alternating field (A.F.) demagnetization analyses were performed on human heart, spleen and liver samples resected from cadavers. The magnetic properties of the samples were measured both at 77K and at 273K. A.F. demagnetization was performed at 273K. Results from the analyses of the tissue indicate the presence of ferromagnetic, fine-grained, magnetically interacting particles which, due primarily to magnetic properties, are thought to be magnetite and/or maghemite. The presence of superparamagnetic particles can be inferred from the increase in saturation IRM values when measured at 77K compared with measurements at 273K and the decay of remanent magnetization upon warming from 77K. The concentration of magnetic material (assuming it is magnetite or maghemite) in the samples varies from 13.7 ng g-1 to 343 ng g-1, with the heart tissue generally having the highest concentration. The presence of magnetic material in these organs may have implications for the function of biogenic magnetite in the human body.

    Notes: Abstract Isothermal remanent magnetization was measured in 14 Wistar and five Porton rat brains. Results indicate that magnetic iron biominerals are present in most of the samples and the formation of these minerals in the rat brain is influenced by transfusion and dietary iron loading when compared to control samples. The high level of consistency in the concentrations and the lack of magnetic material in several of the measured samples indicates that a genetic mechanism may be responsible for magnetic iron biomineralization in the rat brain. Comparison with human studies indicates that extrapolation of the results of rat studies of electromagnetic field bioeffects may not be accurately extrapolated to humans in all cases

    Description: Autoclaved natural seawater collected in the North Pacific Ocean was used as a reference material for nutrients in seawater (RMNS) during an inter-laboratory comparison (I/C) study conducted in 2008. This study was a follow-up to previous studies conducted in 2003 and 2006. A set of six samples was distributed to each of 58 laboratories in 15 countries around the globe, and results were returned by 54 of those laboratories (15 countries). The homogeneities of samples used in the 2008 I/C study, based on analyses for three determinants, were improved compared to those of samples used in the 2003 and 2006 I/C studies. Results of these I/C studies indicate that most of the participating laboratories have an analytical technique for nutrients that is sufficient to provide data of high comparability. The differences between reported concentrations from the same laboratories in the 2006 and 2008 I/C studies for the same batch of RMNS indicate that most of the laboratories have been maintaining internal comparability for two years. Thus, with the current high level of performance in the participating laboratories, the use of a common reference material and the adaptation of an internationally accepted nutrient scale system would increase comparability among laboratories worldwide, and the use of a certified reference material would establish traceability. In the 2008 I/C study we observed a problem of non-linearity of the instruments of the participating laboratories similar to that observed among the laboratories in the 2006 I/C study. This problem of non-linearity should be investigated and discussed to improve comparability for the full range of nutrient concentrations. For silicate comparability in particular, we see relatively larger consensus standard deviations than those for nitrate and phosphate.
