Pendant la campagne Walda du N.O ‘Jean Charcot”, 10 prélèvements méiobenthiques ont été effectués dans la région de la dorsale de Walvis à l'aide d'un carottier Reineck. 2. Les méthodes de collecte du méiobenthos profond sont discutées. 3. L'étude de ces prélèvements révèle und distribution quantitative hétérogène de la méiofaune de part et d'autre de la dorsale, le bassin du Cap étant le plus riche. 4. Les résultats sont comparés avec les données antérieures et notamment celles qui concernent la région du seuil Islande-Färöer.
    Notes: Abstract The distribution of deep-sea meiobenthos near the Walvis ridge has been studied during the Walda-cruise of the R.V. ‘Jean Charcot”. Using the Reineok box-sampler, 10 meiobenthos samples were made. The quantitative meiofauna distribution is different on each side of the ridge. Population densities attain maximum values in the Cape Basin. The methods employed for deep-sea meiobenthos collection are evaluated. Results obtained are discussed and compared with previous information, especially from the Iceland-Faroe area.

    Notes: Abstract The combined effects of temperature, salinity and nutrition on survival and growth of larvae of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas were studied over a period of 7 d in the laboratory. Ripe adults, collected in spring and summer 1987 from natural populations in the Bay of Arcachon, France, were induced to spawn. Larvae of both species were cultured at four temperatures (15°, 20°, 25° and 30°C), four salinities (20, 25, 30 and 35‰S) per temperature, and two levels of nutrition (fed and unfed) per temperature/salinity combination. The fed larvae received a mixed algal diet of 50 cells each of Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum per microlitre. In both bivalve species, larvae survived over a wide range of temperature and salinity, with the exception of mussel larvae, which died at 30°C. Statistical analysis indicated that nutrition had the greatest effect on larval development, explaining 64 to 75% of the variance in growth of M. galloprovincialis and 54 to 70% in growth of Crassostrea gigas. Unfed mussel larvae displayed little growth. Compared with temperature, the effect of salinity was very slight. M. galloprovincialis larvae exhibited best growth at 20°C and 35‰S and C. gigas at 30°C and 30‰S.

    Notes: Abstract Combined effects of temperature, salinity and nutrition on larval survival and growth of the European oyster Ostrea edulis L. were studied over a period of seven days in the laboratory. Larvae were obtained in August 1985 from oysters reared under field conditions on the Mediterranean coast. Four temperatures (15°, 20°, 25°, 30°C), four salinities (20, 25, 30, 35‰ S) and two levels of nutrition (fed or unfed) were used in the experimental design; the fed larvae received a mixed algal diet of Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum at a concentration of 100 cells per microlitre. Larvae survived over a wide range of temperature and salinity; statistical analysis indicated that nutrition had the greatest effect on the development of O. edulis larvae, explaining 85 to 88% of the variance in growth. Compared with temperature, the effect of salinity was very slight, usually statistically insignificant. The combined effects of temperature and nutrition produced the only significant interaction. Growth of starved larvae seems to be independent of both temperature and salinity within the range of levels tested.

    Description: The influence of sampler type on quantitative estimates of deep-sea meiobenthos is examined by an indirect statistical comparison of box corer and multiple corer samples collected throughout the northeast Atlantic, and by a direct comparison of contemporaneously collected multiple corer and box corer samples from a single abyssal location. The data strongly support the suggestion that the greater down-wash/bow wave associated with box corers results in displacement of surface sediments and any superfic~al detrltus layer together with thelr associated fauna. Total metazoan meiobenthos density estimates from box corer samples are about half those from corresponding multiple corer samples Sampler type may also influence the fauna1 composition of both the metazoan and protozoan components of the meiobenthos.

    Description: This chapter throws the attention on the meiobenthos of the deep northeast Atlantic. The main purpose of this chapter is to summarize new results from an area lying between 15°N and 53°N and extending from the continental margin of western Europe and northwest Africa to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It considers first the nature and scope of meiofaunal research in the northeast Atlantic and then discuss the environmental parameters, which are believed to influence meiofaunal organisms. This chapter then discusses the various types and scales of pattern observed among meiofaunal populations within the study area, progressing from the large-scale bathymetric and latitudinal trends and then to small-scale horizontal patterns within particular areas. Faunal densities and faunal composition are considered separately and compared with data from other regions. This chapter also deals with the distribution of meiofauna within sediment profiles and the temporal variability of populations. This chapter concludes by discussing the recent review of deep-sea meiofauna, which focused mainly on the abundance and biomass data from different oceans and on the relationship between the biomass of the meiofauna and that of other faunal components
