Description / Table of Contents:
Summary Four types of preys were presented to workers ofOdontomachus troglodytes: 1) “normal” sized:Allognathotermes workers andTenebrio molitor larvae (5 to 6 mm long); 2) “inert”:Allognathotermes workers anaesthetized with CO2; 3) “small” sized:Microtermes workers; 4) “large” sized:Tenebrio molitor larvae (10 to 11 mm long). The most complete sequence includes the following phases: detection, localization, approach, antennal palpation, attack, lifting, stinging and transport. Only inert preys are always antennated, and they are never attacked nor lifted and stung. The “small” preys are generally stunned or killed during the attack; they are not lifted and stung, whereas the “large” preys, which struggle vigorously after the attack, nearly always are. The “normal” preys are lifted and stung only when the attack is insufficient to stun or kill them.
Notes:
