    Description: The Tufiti di Tusa Formation, a siliciclastic turbidite system of lower Miocene age in southern Italy, is mainly composed of volcaniclastic and quartzolithic sandstones interbedded with mudrocks. Sandstones are subdivided into four distinctive petrofacies, evolving from quartzolithic to volcaniclastic lithofeldspathic and feldspatholithic, reflecting detrital evolution from growing orogen (quartzolithic petrofacies) to active volcanism (volcaniclastic petrofacies). The mineralogical composition of the associated mudrocks is predominantly characterized by phyllosilicates, mainly illite/smectite mixed layers (I/S R1 associated with minor amounts of I/S R0 in the lower part of the succession, and I/S R3 in its upper part), together with illite, detrital micas and chlorite, and minor amounts of chlorite/smectite mixed layers and kaolinite, in addition to quartz, calcite and feldspars. The most abundant phyllosilicates are I/S mixed layers, 10-Å minerals (illite and micas) and chlorite, while kaolinite and chlorite–smectite mixed layers are present as a few per cent or in trace amounts. X-ray diffraction patterns show the occurrence of the ordered I/S R1 mixed layers in most samples but, at the top of the succession, some samples are characterized by I/S R3 mixed layers, whilst in the lower part of the succession I/S R1 is associated with a lower amount of I/S R0. These features suggest that the Tufiti di Tusa Formation experienced a medium diagenetic grade, and the occurrence of I/S R3 could be explained by K-availability in samples in the upper part of the succession. The lithic fragments in sandstones are metasedimentary rocks of Palaeozoic age, and andesite to dacite volcanic rocks of early Miocene age. The associated mudrocks also contain trace element ratios (Cr/V, Y/Ni, La/Sc, Th/Sc, Th/Co, Th/Cr, Cr/Th and Eu/Eu*) consistent with a provenance containing intermediate to silicic sources with scarce or absent basic rocks. The chemical index of alteration (63.2 to 71.6) suggests a moderate degree of weathering in the source. Furthermore, the K/Cs ratios of sediments confirm likely moderate rather than intense weathering. The index of compositional variability (ICV) values (from 1.2 to 2.5) are high enough to suggest the mudrocks are first-cycle sediments with little recycling. The Al–Ti–Zr diagram and the Th/Sc v. Zr/Sc plot indicate poor sorting and rapid deposition of the sediments. Detrital and sedimentary evolution of the Tufiti di Tusa Formation provides constraints, in terms of relations between a growing orogenic system and active volcanism in the Central Mediterranean, to contribute to geodynamic and palaeogeographic reconstructions of the earliest collision in the southern Apennines region.

    Description: Open conduit basaltic volcanoes can be potentially hazardous as the eruptive activity may turn suddenly from a steady state to highly explosive. Unexpected changes in explosion intensity are recurrent at Stromboli volcano, where major explosions and large-scale paroxysms sometimes break off the ordinary, Strombolian activity with little or no warning. Two powerful paroxysmal eruptions took place at Stromboli volcano during the summer 2019, causing widespread fires, consistent damages across the island, injuries and one fatality. Prediction of similar events is really challenging for the modern volcanology, though models propaedeutic to early-warning monitoring systems are not properly assessed yet in many volcanoes worldwide. Here, we present a multi-parametric study that combines petrological and geophysical data to investigate processes generating the two paroxysms. The time information derived by Li enrichments in plagioclase crystals correlates with tilt time series derived by seismometers installed on the island, highlighting the dominant role of shallow conduit processes in triggering the 2019 paroxysmal activity. Our dataset conceives a mechanism of gas slug formation and fast upward migration that finally triggered the eruptions in very limited times. The proposed model questions our capability to forecast such kind of paroxysms in times that are rapid enough to allow mitigation of the associated risk.

    Description: Rare Earth Elements (REE; lanthanides and yttrium) are elements with high economic interest because they are critical elements for modern technologies. This study mainly focuses on the geochemical behavior of REE in hyperacid sulphate brines in volcanic-hydrothermal systems, where the precipitation of sulphate minerals occurs. Kawah Ijen lake, a hyperacid brine hosted in the Ijen caldera (Indonesia), was used as natural laboratory. ∑REE concentration in the lake water is high, ranging from 5.86 to 6.52 mg kg-1. The REE pattern of lake waters normalized to the average local volcanic rock is flat, suggesting isochemical dissolution. Minerals spontaneously precipitated in laboratory at 25 °C from water samples of Kawah Ijen were identified by XRD as gypsum. Microprobe analyses and the chemical composition of major constituents allow to identify possible other minerals precipitated: jarosite, Al-sulphate and Sr, Ba-sulphate. ∑REE concentration in minerals precipitated (mainly gypsum) range from 59.53 to 78.64 mg kg-1. The REE patterns of minerals precipitated normalized to the average local magmatic rock show enrichment in LREE. The REE distribution coefficient (KD), obtained from a ratio of its concentration in the minerals precipitated (mainly gypsum) and the lake water, shows higher values for LREE than HREE. KD-LREE/KD-HREE increases in the studied samples when the concentrations of BaO, MgO, Fe2O3, Al2O3, Na2O and the sum of total oxides (except SO3 and CaO) decrease in the solid phase. The presence of secondary minerals different than gypsum can be the cause of the distribution coefficient variations. High concentrations of REE in Kawah Ijen volcanic lake have to enhance the interest on these environments as possible REE reservoir, stimulating future investigations. The comparison of the KD calculated for REE after mineral precipitation (mainly gypsum) from Kawah Ijen and Poás hyperacid volcanic lakes allow to generalize that the gypsum precipitation removes the LREE from water.

    Description: The chemical and isotopic features of the fluids (water and gases) in the Lucane thermal area (southern Italy) have been investigated in order to verify their origin, water temperature in the geothermal reservoir, and to recognize the main natural processes concerning the water composition during ascent towards the surface. The Lucane geothermal system is placed in the southern sector of the Apennines chains, a seismically active area, close to the southern base of the Mt. Alpi carbonate massif. Along the study area, two main sets of high-angle faults form an almost orthogonal fault system that, as suggested by local structural geology, acts as a preferential pathway for uprising deep fluids. Here, we recognized two different types of waters: (i) cold shallow waters having a meteoritic origin and interacting with carbonate rocks (dolomite and calcite), whose dissolved gases show a dominant atmospheric contribution and (ii) hypothermal waters (average temperature of 21 °C), having a meteoritic origin and interacting with both carbonate rocks and inter-bedded evaporitic deposit. Geochemical data allow estimating a geothermal reservoir temperature between 30 °C and 60 °C, according to silica and Ca/ Mg geothermometers, respectively. A heat discharge related to hypothermal groundwater flow between 7.75E +06 and 2.00E+07 J/s was computed. δ18O and δ2Η data allowed recognizing a meteoric origin for hypothermal (hereafter TL) waters, with mean recharge (infiltration) elevations between 1300 and 1700 m a.s.l. These waters are gas-rich (e.g., CO2 and He), which amounts are higher than those in air-saturated water (ASW). Carbon and helium isotope signature in the TL waters indicate their mainly crustal origin and involve a tectonic control on fluid migration through the crust. Furthermore, we observe that the He isotopic signature in gases dissolved in TL waters is stable over time and its monitoring could be a powerful tool to assess the seismogenetic processes since their preparatory phases.

    Description: An integrated petrological and geochemical study on plagioclase crystals erupted at Vulcano Island (Aeolian Islands, Southern Italy) over the past 1000 years allowed us to draw a detailed model of the internal structure of the volcanic system, in which modes of magma interaction and timescales of storage at crustal depth are shown. The integration of compositional, textural and temporal record preserved in plagioclase crystals provides evidence for an articulated plumbing system constituted by several reservoirs connected at the crust-mantle boundary. Here, a basaltic-shoshonitic magma resides and is thought to feed the shallow magma reservoir of both La Fossa and Vulcanello centers, finally triggering eruptions throughout injections from depth. Textural and micro-compositional data on plagioclase crystals suggest the presence of three main magma levels located between ca. 17 and 2 km of depth beneath La Fossa Cone, which were intermittently reactivated over the whole period of activity considered. Plagioclase textures and compositional zoning indicate that the shallow (b11 km bsl) portions of the La Fossa plumbing system were particularly active over the last 1000 years, as crystals record the ascent and continuous episodes of magma recharge and mixing that affect the shallower reservoirs. The first stage of activity at Vulcanello (i.e. Vulcanello I eruption) was fed by slightly differentiated melts that directly rose from the deep basaltic-shoshonitic reservoir, residing for a short period of time into the crust before the eruption. Indeed, diffusion modeling calculations on Sr zoning in plagioclase indicate shorter timescales of residence (b2 years) for crystals erupted at Vulcanello compared to those of the La Fossa Cone eruptions (ca. 2–10 years). If compared with the time span between eruptions occurred at La Fossa, our time estimations may suggest that magma feeding the activity at La Fossa resides most of the time in reservoirs located below the plagioclase nucleation depth (~11 km of depth), finally rising up only few years before the eruption onset. According to our model, magmatic eruptions at Vulcano Island are related to the ascent of deep basic (basaltic/shoshonitic) magmas that trigger a sort of “reaction chain” through subsequent episodes of recharge and mixing toward the upper magmatic reservoirs.

    Description: In this study, we analysed the Gioia Tauro Plain (Tyrrhenian coast, southern Italy) in terms of hydrostratigraphy and the physicochemical status of groundwater. We investigated the hydrostratigraphic framework of the area identifying a deep aquifer (made by late Miocene succession), an aquitard (consisting of Pliocene clayey and silty deposits) and a shallow aquifer (including Late Pleistocene and Holocene marine and alluvial sediments) using subsoil data (boreholes and geophysics). Our reconstruction showed that the structural geology controls the spatial pattern of the aquitard top and the shallow aquifer thickness. Furthermore, we evaluated the hydraulic conductivity for the shallow aquifer using an empirical method, calibrated by slug tests, obtaining values ranging from 10􀀀4 to 10􀀀5 m/s with a maximum of 10􀀀3 m/s located close to inland dune fields. The piezometric level of the shallow aquifer recorded a significant drop between the 1970s and 2021 (􀀀35 m as the worst value). It is the effect of climate and soil use changes, the latter being the increased water demand for kiwi cultivation. Despite the overexploitation of the shallow aquifer, shallow groundwater is fresh (736 S/cm as mean electrical conductivity) except for a narrow coastal area where the electrical conductivity is more than 1500 S/cm, which can be due to the seawater intrusion. What was more complex was the physicochemical status of the deep aquifer characterised by high temperature (up to 25.8 C) and electrical conductivity up to 10,520 S/cm along the northern and southern plain boundaries marked by tectonic structures. This issue suggested the dominant role of the local fault system that is likely affecting the deep groundwater flow and its chemical evolution.

    Description: Magmatism accompanies rifting along divergent plate boundaries, although its role before continental breakup remains poorly understood. For example, the magma-assisted Northern Main Ethiopian Rift (NMER) lacks current volcanism and clear tectono-magmatic relationships with its contiguous rift portions. Here we define its magmatic behaviour, identifying the most recent eruptive fissures (EF) whose aphyric basalts have a higher Ti content than those of older monogenetic scoria cones (MSC), which are porphyritic and plagioclase-dominated. Despite these differences, calculations highlight a similar parental melt for EF and MSC products, suggesting only a different evolutionary history after melt generation. While MSC magmas underwent a further step of storage at intermediate crustal levels, EF magmas rose directly from the base of the crust without contamination, even below older polygenetic volcanoes, suggesting rapid propagation of transcrustal dikes across solidified magma chambers. Whether this recent condition in the NMER is stable or transient, it indicates a transition from central polygenetic to linear fissure volcanism, indicative of increased tensile conditions and volcanism directly fed from the base of the crust, suggesting transition towards mature rifting.

    Description: Groundwater is the main water supply for agricultural and industrial needs in many coastal plains worldwide. Groundwater depletion often triggers land subsidence, which threatens manmade infrastructure and activities and aggravates other geohazards. We applied a multi-temporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar technique to Sentinel-1 datasets to detect ground motion in the Gioia Tauro plain (Calabria, Southern Italy) from 2018 to 2021. The InSAR data were analysed through the integrated use of groundwater head, stratigraphical and geomorphological data, and land use information to distinguish the potential subsidence divers. The results show that subsiding areas, with a mean rate of about 10 mm/yr, are in the middle of the plain, and their location is influenced by the spatial distribution of compressible sediments included in the shallow aquifer. Furthermore, the subsidence arrangement is spatially accordant with the main groundwater depression area, which can be ascribed to the ongoing and increasing water pumping for predominantly agricultural usage. We also observed that subsidence (up to 10 mm/yr) affects the western dock of the Gioia Tauro harbour, in front of which, in very shallow water, are two submarine canyon heads already affected by slides in the past.

    Description: This work aims to define the geothermal conceptual model of the Spezzano Albanese thermal system located in the northern sector of the Calabria Region, along the western edge of the Sibari Plain. The study confirms that the deep thermal reservoir of Spezzano Albanese is mainly hosted within the permeable levels of the evaporite deposits of the Messinian succession including siltstones with manganese mineralisation, halite, and gypsumarenites. The thermal waters show discharging temperature between 20.2 and 26.6 ◦C and a high compositional variability, from Na–Cl to Na–Ca–HCO3. The compositional evolution (from Na–Cl to Na–HCO3) is accompanied by a decrease in both salinity and the concentrations of most dissolved constituents, including Cl, Br, B, Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, and Ba. These variations are due to mixing between the thermal endmember, rich in Cl and related components, and low-salinity, cold shallow waters (temperature between 17.5 and 22.7 ◦C). The study points out that the thermal endmember derives by halite dissolution and more complex water-rock interaction processes involving (1) the dissolution of other solid phases of the Messinian deposits, as also confirmed by δ34S values of dissolved sulphate and sulphide, and (2) the precipitation of secondary solid phases (e.g., barite). The geothermometric modelling suggests that the thermal groundwaters in the deep reservoir are probably in equilibrium with either (i) quartz, calcite, disordered dolomite, low-albite, and K-feldspar, as well as with pyrophyllite and poorly crystalline kaolinite (as proxies of clay minerals) at temperatures of 65.5 ± 4.5 ◦C or (ii) quartz, calcite, disordered dolomite, low-albite, disordered adularia, laumontite and saponites at temperatures of 56.1 ± 4.3 ◦C, based on the first and second geothermometric model, respectively. The δ18O and δ2H values of water confirm a meteoric origin for the thermal waters with average recharge altitudes between 745 and 857 m a.s.l. These elevations are compatible with the recharge from the western side of the Esaro valley where evaporite successions are found close to the surface. The isotopic value of the dissolved CO2 associated to the Spezzano Terme water highlights its likely microbial origin, as recognised for other thermal circuits hosted in sedimentary rocks of the southern Apennines. Furthermore, the thermal endmember shows a noteworthy enrichment in CH4 with respect to air due to the interaction of groundwater with sediments rich in organic matter. Although methane could have a biogenic origin, the presence of a minor component of thermogenic methane in the gas phase dissolved in the Spezzano Terme waters cannot be completely excluded. The data obtained in this study allow to assume that the recharge meteoric waters descend to a maximum depth of about 1.1–1.4 km below the main emergence area and then the regional NE-SW fault systems probably act as a preferential pathway for the ascent of the thermal waters towards the surface. These waters discharge at Spezzano Albanese, where the crystalline-metamorphic units cropping out immediately upstream of the emergence area act as cap-rock favouring the final ascent towards the surface of the thermal waters.
