Notes: We have developed a self-healing mercury-wetted target as a practical source of soft x-ray radiation for photoexciting extreme ultraviolet lasers. A threaded rod, rotating in a pool of mercury, demonstrates a soft x-ray conversion efficiency similar to that of expendable gold-coated targets in synchronous photopumping of a photoionization Xe2+ laser at 109 nm. Surfaces self-heal or are continuously regenerated by rewetting, while mercury debris is removed by evaporation from the target chamber walls and optics. Long target lifetime and self-cleaning performance of the new target system are attractive features in future high-repetition-rate, high-throughput applications for photopumping of extreme ultraviolet or soft x-ray lasers, and more generally as incoherent sources for soft x-ray lithography and spectroscopy.

Notes: We have designed a near field measurement system operating at 200 GHz which has a dynamic range of 60 dB. The system has a short term and long term phase variation less than 0.5° and 2°, respectively. On averaging 128 times at each measurement point by using the averaging function of the network anaylzer, the short term phase variation decreases to less than 0.2°. The phase variation mentioned above is observed with the testing probe pointing to the center of the antenna under test. The contours of the near field obtained shows that the field is highly circular as expected from the theoretical predication. We have shown that the system can distinguish the quality of the corrugated feed horn by near field measurement. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We propose a novel sensitive method of surface impedance measurement for small samples utilizing a YIG delay line. We will give a full analysis of the relationship between the phase and amplitude of the signals to surface impedance. The sensitivity of this method will be fully addressed. The dispersion relations of magnetostatic waves guided by lossy ground planes will also be given as byproducts of the above analysis. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The analytical three-dimensional temperature solution of a five-layer anisotropic plate structure with infinite lateral boundaries and with embedded heat sources has been derived. By incorporating the method of images, this solution can be utilized to obtain the exact solution of a five-layer structure with rectangular lateral boundaries and with embedded heat sources. Consequently, this solution constitutes the most general analytical expression reported so far. The solution is in the form of a double Fourier integration. To carry out the integration effectively, the characteristics of the transformed temperature in the Fourier domain have been studied. Subsequently, an integration algorithm has been developed for the efficient numerical integration of the double Fourier inverse transform for temperature calculation. In comparison with the double Fourier series solution of rectangular structure, the solution reported here is not only much more computationally effective but also more general. Besides thermal problems, the solution also has important applications in electrostatics since the thermostatics share the same equations with electrostatics. Examples of electrostatic problems are multilayer stripline, and microstrip, multilevel interconnection of integrated circuits, and multilayer printed circuit boards.

Notes: Using the double Fourier integral transform method, the analytical temperature solutions to the single-layer and multilayer structures with infinite lateral dimensions have been derived. For the single-layer structure, temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity has been taken into account using the Kirchhoff transformation. The use of discrete rectangular heat sources rather than circular heat sources on the top surface of the structure makes this model particularly useful for the thermal analysis of common solid-state and integrated circuit devices and packages. For studying the thermal properties of a large class of solid-state device geometries, this model can be utilized to approximate actual devices with reasonable accuracy. The general device geometries for which this model can be employed to represent the actual devices are determined. Compared with the model where the finite extent of the chip lateral dimensions is considered, the present model is much more computationally efficient for cases where the heat source size is much smaller than the substrate or package size.

Notes: Using the method of images and the analytical temperature solution to the multilayer infinite plate structure, the thermal profile over finite rectangular multilayer integrated circuit devices can be calculated exactly. The advantage of using the image method lies in the enhanced capability of arriving at an analytical solution for structures where analytical solutions do not apparently exist, e.g., circular or arbitrarily oriented rectangular sources over multilayered rectangular structures. The new approach results in large savings in computer CPU time especially for small sources over large substrates. The method also finds very important applications to integrated circuit devices with heat dissipating elements close to the edge boundaries. Results from two examples indicate that the edge boundaries of a device may also be utilized to remove heat from it. This additional heat removing capability should have important applications in high power devices.

Notes: A high-performance liquid chromatography method has been developed for simultaneous determination of triclosan (2,4,4-trichloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether) and triclocarban (3,4,4-trichlorocarbanilide) in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. The two compounds could be separated on a Nucleosil C18 column and eluted with acetonitrile and water (70:30, v/v) as the mobile phase and detected with a differential refractive index detector. The retention times of triclosan and triclocarban were 5.81 and 2.99 min, respectively. The results obtained were in good agreement with those obtained by a differential pulse voltammetric method.
