    Description: Evidence from geologic archives suggests that there were large changes in the tropical hydrologic cycle associated with the two prominent northern hemisphere deglacial cooling events, Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1; ∼19 to 15 kyr BP; kyr BP = 1000 yr before present) and the Younger Dryas (∼12.9 to 11.7 kyr BP). These hydrologic shifts have been alternatively attributed to high and low latitude origin. Here, we present a new record of hydrologic variability based on planktic foraminifera-derived δ18O of seawater (δ18Osw) estimates from a sediment core from the tropical Eastern Indian Ocean, and using 12 additional δ18Osw records, construct a single record of the dominant mode of tropical Eastern Equatorial Pacific and Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) hydrologic variability. We show that deglacial hydrologic shifts parallel variations in the reconstructed interhemispheric temperature gradient, suggesting a strong response to variations in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and the attendant heat redistribution. A transient model simulation of the last deglaciation suggests that hydrologic changes, including a southward shift in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) which likely occurred during these northern hemisphere cold events, coupled with oceanic advection and mixing, resulted in increased salinity in the Indonesian region of the IPWP and the eastern tropical Pacific, which is recorded by the δ18Osw proxy. Based on our observations and modeling results we suggest the interhemispheric temperature gradient directly controls the tropical hydrologic cycle on these time scales, which in turn mediates poleward atmospheric heat transport.

    Description: Widespread global declines in shellfish reefs (ecosystem-forming bivalves such as oysters and mussels) have led to growing interest in their restoration and protection. With restoration projects now occurring on four continents and in at least seven countries, global restoration guidelines for these ecosystems have been developed based on experience over the past two decades. The following key elements of the guidelines are outlined: (a) the case for shellfish reef resto- ration and securing financial resources; (b) planning, feasibility, and goal set- ting; (c) biosecurity and permitting; (d) restoration in practice; (e) scaling up from pilot to larger scale restoration, (f) monitoring, (g) restoration beyond oyster reefs (specifically mussels), and (h) successful communication for shell- fish reef restoration projects.

    Notes: Introduction: The incidence of spontaneous transition of 2:1 AV block to 1:1 AV conduction during AV nodal reentrant tachycardia has not been well reported. Among previous studies, controversy also existed about the site of the 2:1 AV block during AV nodal reentrant tachycardia. Methods and Results: In patients with 2:1 AV block during AV nodal reentrant tachycardia, the incidence of spontaneous transition of 2:1 AV block to 1:1 AV conduction and change of electrophysiologic properties during spontaneous transition were analyzed. Among the 20 patients with 2:1 AV block during AV nodal reentrant tachycardia, a His-bundle potential was absent in blocked beats during 2:1 AV block in 8 patients, and the maximal amplitude of the His-bundle potential in the blocked beats was the same as that in the conducted beats in 4 patients and was significantly smaller than that in the conducted beats in 8 patients (0.49 ± 0.25 mV vs 0.16 ± 0.07 mV, P = 0.007). Spontaneous transition of 2:1 AV block to 1:1 AV conduction occurred in 15 (75%) of 20 patients with 2:1 AV block during AV nodal reentrant tachycardia. Spontaneous transition of 2:1 AV block to 1:1 AV conduction was associated with transient right and/or left bundle branch block. The 1:1 AV conduction with transient bundle branch block was associated with significant His-ventricular (HV) interval prolongation (66 ± 19 ms) compared with 2:1 AV block (44 ± 6 ms, P 〈 0.01) and 1:1 AV conduction without bundle branch block (43 ± 6 ms, P 〈 0.01). Conclusion: The 2:1 AV block during AV nodal reentrant tachycardia is functional; the level of block is demonstrated to be within or below the His bundle in a majority of patients with 2:1 AV block during AV nodal reentrant tachycardia, and a minority are possibly high in the junction between the AV node and His bundle.     Notes: Regulation of Transient Outward Current. Introduction: Regulation of transient outward current (Ito) in human myocytes is unclear. The present study investigated the effect of protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) inhibitors on Ito in human atrial myocytes. Methods and Results: Atrial myocytes were isolated enzymatically from biopsies of human right atrial appendage obtained from patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery. Ito was recorded by the whole-cell patch-clamp technique in voltage-clamp configuration. Two groups of PTK inhibitors, the ATP binding site PTK inhibitors genistein and AG957 and the protein substrate PTK inhibitors ST638 and PP2, significantly inhibited Ito in a concentration-dependent manner, with a potency order of genistein 〉 AG957 〉 ST638 〉 PP2. At test pulse potential of +60 mV, Ito was inhibited by 28% ± 3%, 59% ± 3%, and 89% ± 3% by 15, 50, and 100 μM genistein, respectively. Daidzein and PP3, inactive analogues of genistein and PP2, respectively, did not produce any inhibitory effects on Ito. In addition to the inhibition of Ito amplitude, the protein substrate PTK inhibitors ST638 and PP2 significantly accelerated Ito inactivation (current decay) and delayed recovery from inactivation. Inhibition of protein tyrosine phosphatase partially reversed the effect of genistein. Stimulation or inhibition of serine/threonine kinases (PKA, PKC, and PKG) did not change Ito or alter the inhibitory response of PTK inhibitors on Ito. Conclusion: In human atrial cells, the PTK pathway plays an important role in the regulation of basal Ito, independent of serine/threonine kinases.

    Notes: Background: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the electrocardiographic and electrophysiologic characteristics of right midseptal (RMS) and left midseptal (LMS) accessory pathways (APs), and to develop a stepwise algorithm to differentiate RMS from LMS APs. Methods and Results: From May 1989 to February 2004, 1591 patients with AP-mediated tachyarrhythmia underwent RF catheter ablation in this institution, and 38 (2.4%) patients had MS APs. The delta wave and precordial QRS transition during sinus rhythm, retrograde P wave during orthodromic tachycardia, and electrophysiologic characteristic and catheter ablation in 30 patients with RMS APs and 8 patients with LMS APs were analyzed. There was no significant difference in electrophysiologic characteristics and catheter ablation between RMS and LMS APs. The polarity of retrograde P wave during orthodromic tachycardia also showed no statistical difference between patients with RMS and LMS APs. The delta wave polarity was positive in leads I, aVL, and V3 to V6 in patients with RMS and LMS APs. Patients with LMS APs had a higher incidence of biphasic delta wave in lead V1 than patients with RMS APs (80% vs. 15%, P = 0.012). The distributions of precordial QRS transition were different between RMS APs (leads V2; n = 10, V3; n = 7 and V4; n = 3) and LMS APs (leads V1; n = 1 and V2; n = 4) (P = 0.03). The combination of a delta negative wave in lead V1 or precordial QRS transition in lead V3 or V4 had a sensitivity of 90%, specificity of 80%, positive predictive value of 95%, and negative predictive value of 66% in predicting an RMS AP. Conclusions: Delta wave polarity in lead V1 and precordial QRS transition may differentiate RMS and LMS APs.
