    Notes: The solar wind plasma from the Sun interacts with the Moon, generating a wake structure behind it, since the Moon is to a good approximation an insulator, has no intrinsic magnetic field, and a very thin atmosphere. Following earlier one and one-half dimensional (1〈fraction SHAPE="CASE"〉12D) simulations, 2〈fraction SHAPE="CASE"〉12D simulations have been studied for the first time. 2〈fraction SHAPE="CASE"〉12D simulations in the solar wind rest frame with an initial circular void reveal structures similar to those found in the earlier simulations, indicating that the 1〈fraction SHAPE="CASE"〉12D simulations are a good approximation to the physics. The infilling of the wake was found to be anisotropic, with the infilling occurring predominantly parallel to the magnetic field. The 2〈fraction SHAPE="CASE"〉12D simulations that are stationary with respect to the Moon, allow the effect of solar wind magnetic fields oblique to the solar wind flow to be studied, and these reveal additional assymetries. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The solar wind plasma from the Sun interacts with the Moon, generating a wake structure behind it, since the Moon is to a good approximation an insulator, has no intrinsic magnetic field and a very thin atmosphere. The lunar wake in simplified geometry has been simulated via a 1〈fraction SHAPE="CASE"〉12D electromagnetic particle-in-cell code, with high resolution in order to resolve the full phase space dynamics of both electrons and ions. The simulation begins immediately downstream of the moon, before the solar wind has infilled the wake region, then evolves in the solar wind rest frame. An ambipolar electric field and a potential well are generated by the electrons, which subsequently create a counter-streaming beam distribution, causing a two-stream instability which confines the electrons. This also creates a number of electron phase space holes. Ion beams are accelerated into the wake by the ambipolar electric field, generating a two-stream distribution with phase space mixing that is strongly influenced by the potentials created by the electron two-stream instability. The simulations compare favorably with WIND observations. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Twenty-five preterm neonates were studied to determine whether monitoring of body temperature may be accomplished by taking axillary instead of rectal temperatures. Both axillary and rectal temperatures were taken simultaneously 12 times over a two-day period. Temperatures were recorded at three, five, eight, and ten minutes. The researchers concluded that an axillary measurement of temperature may be adequately substituted for rectal measurement of temperature.

    Notes: Abstract The delay coordinate technique is examined as an indicator of the regime of particle dynamics for the system of single charged particle motion in magnetic reversals. Examples of numerically integrated trajectories in both static (zero electric field) and time dependent (corresponding nonzero induction electric field) simple models for magnetic reversals are considered. In the static case, the dynamics can in principle be directly classified by constructing Poincaré surfaces of section; here we demonstrate that whilst the Poincaré surface contains the relevant information to classify the dynamics, the corresponding delay coordinate plot can provide a far more sensitive indication of the onset of nonregular behaviour. In the case of nonperiodic time dependence considered here Poincaré plots cannot in general be constructed directly. Nevertheless, delay coordinate plots can still reveal details of the phase space portrait of the system, and here are shown to indicate whether segments of stochastic motion exist in a given trajectory. It is anticipated that the delay coordinate plot technique as realized here will be a valuable tool in characterizing the behaviour in large numbers of trajectories that are evolved in time-dependent systems, thereby giving us insight into the evolution of the distribution function as a whole, either in prescribed fields or in self-consistent numerical simulations.

    Description: Learning from successful applications of methods originating in statistical mechanics, com- plex systems science, or information theory in one scientific field (e.g., atmospheric physics or climatology) can provide important insights or conceptual ideas for other areas (e.g., space sciences) or even stimulate new research questions and approaches. For instance, quantification and attribution of dynamical complexity in output time series of nonlinear dynamical systems is a key challenge across scientific disciplines. Especially in the field of space physics, an early and accurate detection of characteristic dissimilarity between nor- mal and abnormal states (e.g., pre-storm activity vs. magnetic storms) has the potential to vastly improve space weather diagnosis and, consequently, the mitigation of space weather hazards. This review provides a systematic overview on existing nonlinear dynamical systems- based methodologies along with key results of their previous applications in a space physics context, which particularly illustrates how complementary modern complex systems ap- proaches have recently shaped our understanding of nonlinear magnetospheric variability. The rising number of corresponding studies demonstrates that the multiplicity of nonlin- ear time series analysis methods developed during the last decades offers great potentials for uncovering relevant yet complex processes interlinking different geospace subsystems, variables and spatiotemporal scales.
