    Notes: Abstract Eudendrium glomeratum Picard, in the Ligurian Sea, is one of the major components of hard-bottom sessile zoobenthos in the cold season. It settles mainly between 10 and 40 m depth, forming a seasonal facies. The presence of E. glomeratum has been evaluated by measuring in situ the height of the colonies present within a standard surface of 1 m2. Observations were carried out every other week for a whole year. The height of the colonies was correlated with their biomass (wet weight) and trophic functionality (number of polyps). The quantitative evaluation of the population shows that the situation is stable, with almost identical values at the extremes of the observed yearly time series. The species is present from October to April–May, and it is absent in the summer. The formation and disappearance of the E. glomeratum population are sudden. The colonies are sexually mature from their appearance in October to December–January. Different categories of colonies are recognizable; and are essentially referable to two groups: (1) colonies deriving from regeneration of colonies present in the previous year (45%); (2) colonies deriving from planula settlement (43%). A third group (12%) is of uncertain origin and may belong to either of the abovementioned categories. Mortality is 60% in the first group, and 82% in the second one. By “dead colonies” is meant those which do not reappear after a yearly cycle.

    Notes: Abstract Capulus subcompressus Pelseneer, 1903 (Gastropoda: Capulidae) is a small epibiont gastropod living at Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea) down to 540 m on the calcareous tubes of its unique host, the serpulid Serpula narconensis Baird, 1865. This polychaete forms bush-like aggregates which host a rich microfauna of crustaceans, hydroids and molluscs. In contrast to all other capulids, C. subcompressus shows an evident oval shell aperture, which is due to an allometric growth that can be imputed to the Serpula tube morphology. Since the allometric growth is detectable in all size classes, it could be deduced that the compressed shape of the C. subcompressus shell is the stable result of a significant evolutionary history which binds tightly these two species in Antarctic waters.

    Notes: Abstract Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation of two Antarctic sponges, Phorbas glaberrima and Tedania charcoti, showed that the exopinacoderm effects a direct uptake of benthic diatoms which settle on the sponge surface. In P. glaberrima, planktonic diatoms were also observed penetrating through the inhalant system, the primary way of feeding in sponges. Benthic diatoms which accumulate in the mesohyl underneath the exopinacoderm help to strengthen the sponge cortex and may be an alimentary source during oligotrophic periods in the Antarctic environment.

    Description: Coastal marine environment is a complex system and its management requires adequate information. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are considered pilot sites useful to define innovative tools for the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). Their management however requires acquaintance with the relationships between the protected site and the status of the coastal neighbouring areas in order to assess mutual effects and influences. There is the need of monitoring systems capable of highlighting physical and biological phenomena, and possible oceanographic anomalies at local scale, to assess possible existing differences between MPAs and their neighbouring unprotected zones. The present study proposes an integrated analysis of data sets coming from in situ and remote-sensing data to evaluate the reliability of satellite sensors for coastal zone monitoring and to better understand the short-term environmental dynamics on a coastal area centred on the Portofino MPA (Ligurian Sea).

    Description: L’ambiente marino costiero è un sistema complesso la cui gestione richiede il coinvolgimento di differenti discipline e la notevole capacità di integrazione fra osservazioni molto eterogenee. E’ in fase di messa a punto di un sistema di osservazione dell’ambiente marino nell’AMP di Portofino. L’idea è quella di sviluppare un monitoraggio dai costi contenuti, che sia in grado di evidenziare le fenomenologie prevalenti sia di tipo fisico che biologico e permetta di cogliere eventuali situazioni anomale rispetto ad una climatologia di riferimento. L’acquisizione dei dati si avvale di differenti piattaforme sia locali che remote e di differenti strategie di campionamento ed elaborazione.

    Description: L’area marina costiera antistante il Promontorio di Portofino è stata inserita nella rete ILTER – International Long Term Ecological Research dal 2007, grazie ai numerosi studi ecologici che si susseguono nell’area dagli anni ’80, ed in particolare dal 1999, quando è iniziata la raccolta sistematica delle principali variabili fisiche e chimico-biologiche lungo la colonna d’acqua e delle principali forzanti meteo-climatiche. L’analisi dei dati ha messo in evidenza un incremento della temperatura media lungo la colonna d’acqua negli ultimi anni rispetto al decennio precedente (1985-1995) ed in particolare un progressivo aumento della temperatura superficiale nelle stagioni primaverili ed autunnali, che ha portato ad un ampliamento del periodo caldo. L’area di studio è inoltre caratterizzata da una forte variabilità interannuale: sono state registrate importanti anomalie termiche nell’estate 2003 e nei periodi autunnali e primaverili del 2006-2007 con temperature superficiali più elevate rispetto alla media del periodo, dovute a due importanti anomalie termiche atmosferiche. Negli ultimi anni, le precipitazioni annuali sono sempre al di sotto della media climatica, ad eccezione del 2002, con conseguente modificazione della struttura termo-alina dell’area di studio. Le variabilità riscontrate si riflettono sui popolamenti planctonici, modificando le risposte delle comunità, in particolare nel periodo tardo primaverile. L’area conserva, comunque, le caratteristiche oligotrofiche tipiche del Mar Ligure: infatti, pur mostrando una evidente variabilità interannuale, la biomassa planctonica media nello strato superficiale continua a rimanere bassa, con una tendenza a diminuire negli ultimi anni.

    Description: Body size, geographical distribution and biomass make Adamussium colbecki (Smith 1902) one of the most important bivalve species in the Antarctic. Based on samples collected in austral summer 1999/2000 in Terra Nova Bay, the annual formation of shell growth bands visible on x-ray photographs was verified by stable isotope analyzis. A general von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to size-at-age data of 25 individuals (H*= 108.86 mm, K= 0.114 y-1, t0= -0.367, D= 1.284). Maximum age of A. colbecki is likely to be more than 18 years. Somatic production calculated from mass-specific growth rates was 235 kJ m-2 y-1. Gonadal productivity estimated by an average value for reproductive output of pectinids amounted to 59 kJ m-2 y-1. Annual somatic and gonad production-to-biomass ratios (P/B) were 0.199 and 0.043, respectively. According to its consumption and production A. colbecki is likely to play a significant role in the trophic web of Terra Nova Bay.

    Description: Adamussium colbecki is one of the well-studied Antarctic molluscs. However, information on its growth rate is currently based on estimates from mark and recapture experiments and from growth-ring analysis. This paper provides the first estimates of the growth pattern of this scallop throughout a year, for individuals maintained under both natural field and laboratory conditions. Results show size-related differences in growth rate, both in the field and in aquaria, with scallops in Terra Nova Bay growing faster than those kept in aquaria. Growth performances were lower than those reported in the literature.

    Description: Annual growth rates of Antarctic marine organisms are low compared to their relatives from warmer waters. Previous studies hypothesize that high food availability during austral spring-summer may enable Antarctic invertebrates to attain comparatively high short-term growth rates despite the low temperature. Neither a temperature-growth experiment with juvenile Adamussium colbecki (Smith 1902) nor the comparison of A. colbecki summer growth rates with an empirical scallop specific growth-to-temperature relationship could confirm this hypothesis. Summer growth rates of young, immature A. colbecki are strongly affected by temperature as indicated by high Q10 and Arrhenius activation energy.
