Notizen: SUMMARY 1. In the upper Rhône catchment (Swiss Alps), modifications in the longitudinal pattern of environmental conditions and the benthic macroinvertebrate fauna were investigated in a glacier-fed stream (Rhône) at its confluence with a smaller glacier-fed tributary (Mutt) in June, August and September 1998. The distance to the source glacier was greater for the Mutt than for the Rhône.2. Environmental conditions were harsher for the biota in the main stream upstream of the confluence than in the tributary. The tributary upstream of the confluence was characterised by higher taxonomic richness and abundance of the zoobenthos than the Rhône upstream.3. Although environmental conditions in the main stream were little modified by the tributary, the fauna was richer and more diverse below the confluence. During the period of ice melt, colonisation from the Mutt led to the occurrence of faunal elements atypical of glacial streams in the main glacial stream upstream of the confluence, where water temperature remains below 4 °C.4. Although contributing an average of only 10% to the Rhône discharge, the Mutt tributary is suggested to be the faunal driver of the system.

Notizen: 1. A study on glacial stream ecosystems was carried out in six regions across Europe, from Svalbard to the French Pyrenees. The main aim was to test the validity of the conceptual model of Milner & Petts (1994) with regard to the zonation of chironomids of glacier-fed rivers along altitudinal and latitudinal gradient.2. Channel stability varied considerably, both on the latitudinal and altitudinal scale, being lowest in the northern regions (Svalbard, Iceland and Norway) and the Swiss Alps. Water temperature at the upstream sites was always 〈2 °C.3. There was a prominent difference in taxonomic richness between the Alpine and the northern European regions, with a higher number of taxa in the south. In all regions, the chironomid community was characterized by the genus Diamesa and the subfamily Orthocladiinae. Of a total of 63 taxa recorded, two (Diamesa bertrami and Orthocladius frigidus) were common in all the regions except Svalbard.4. On the basis of cluster analysis, seven distinct groups of sites were evident amongst glacial-fed systems of the five regions (Pyrenees excluded). This classification separated the glacier-fed streams on geographical, latitudinal and downstream gradients.5. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) of environmental variables was carried out using 41 taxa at 105 sites. Slope, water depth, distance from source, water temperature and the Pfankuch channel stability index were found to be the major explanatory environmental variables. The analysis separated Diamesinae and typical upstream orthoclads from the other chironomids by low temperature and high channel instability.6. In all six regions, Diamesa was present closest to the glacier. Within 200 m of the glacier snout, other genera of Diamesinae were found together with Orthocladiinae. Pioneer taxa like Diamesa species coexisted with later colonizers like Eukiefferiella minor/fittkaui in relatively unstable channels.7. The longitudinal succession of chironomid assemblages across altitudinal and latitudinal gradients in glacial streams followed the same pattern, with similar genera and groups of species. The general aspects of the conceptual model of Milner & Petts (1994) were supported. However, Diamesa species have wider temperature limits than predicted and other Diamesinae as well as Orthocladiinae colonize metakryal habitats.

Notizen: Various criteria have been proposed for the identification of early neoplastic changes in the setting of both small hepatocellular carcinomas and macroregenerative nodules. In this study we have applied those criteria to cases of liver cirrhosis without tumour (group I) and hepatocellular-carcinoma-associated cirrhosis (group II) to assess their discriminatory value in these two situations. Group I included 50 liver biopsies with uncomplicated cirrhosis while group II encompassed 48 liver biopsies of cirrhotic nodules adjacent to hepatocellular carcinomas. The histological changes sought were large cell dysplasia, small cell dysplasia, cytoplasmic basophilia, small microacinar structures, peripheral distribution of nuclei, nuclear irregularities and thickened liver cell plates. These changes were also assessed in macroregenerative nodules (nine in group I and seven in group II). None of these changes was useful to discriminate between group I and group II cirrhotic nodules when assessed separately. On the other hand, cirrhotic nodules showing three or fewer changes were never associated with malignancy, whereas those exhibiting four or more alterations were often located in the vicinity of a tumour. Acinar structures, thickened cell trabeculae, peripheral distribution of nuclei and nuclear irregularities seem to be the most specific indicators of proximity to a hepatocellular carcinoma. Similar results were obtained for macroregenerative nodules. These results may be helpful as guidelines to the probability of having a hepatocellular carcinoma elsewhere in livers containing atypical cirrhotic nodules, and may also prove valuable in the selection of appropriate material for investigating early molecular events in hepatic carcinogenesis.

Notizen: Abstract Alternative splicing gives rise to numerous CD44 isoforms, some of which seem to have a role in tumour metastasis. Specifically, a variant form of CD44 with sequences encoded by exon v6 (CD44v6) confers metastatic potential when transfected into a nonmetastasizing cell line of rat pancreatic adenocarcinoma. This study has investigated standard CD44 (CD44s) and CD44v6 expression immunohistochemically in 6 samples of normal pancreatic tissue, 4 of tissue affected by chronic pancreatitis, and 24 of tissue from metastasizing and nonmetastasizing pancreatic adenocarcinomas. In addition, 18 samples from lymph node or visceral metastases were included in the study. CD44s was expressed in nonneoplastic tissue and in tissue from pancreatic adenocarcinomas. In contrast, CD44v6 was not detected in any of the normal tissue or chronic pancreatitis specimens, whereas 54% of pancreatic adenocarcinomas and 55% of metastases expressed this variant exon. Although it is not clear whether CD44 isoforms containing exon v6 play a part in malignant progression in the human exocrine pancreas, it seems plausible that the expression of multiple isoforms containing this and other variant exon confers a selective advantage on pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Notizen: Abstract We present a case of aortocaval fistula (ACF) secondary to spontaneous rupture of an atherosclerotic infrarenal aortic aneurysm into the inferior vena cava that was initially diagnosed with computed tomography (CT). This is believed to be the first report of this condition with CT demonstration of the exact site of fistula and CT—pathologic correlation. We retrospectively reviewed the CT findings of another two cases of ACF and the previous literature.

Notizen: Abstract Background:Sentinel node biopsy (SNB) has been proposed as analternative to axillary lymph-node dissection (ALND) in breast cancer. Beforeimplementing SNB in our practice, we wished to test its validity by comparingit to the standard ALND, both in our hands and with other reported series. Patients and methods:One hundred thirty-two patients wereincluded prospectively. SNB and immediate ALND were performed. For SNB, atechnetium-colloid was used to produce preoperative lymphoscintigraphy andintraoperative gamma-probe search for the SN. Serial sectioning andimmunostains were used on the SN. A comprehensive review of the literature wasdone in order to run a meta-analysis of diagnostic tests using a summaryreceiver operating characteristic curve (SROC) to calculate the pooledparameters of sensitivity and associated 95% confidence interval(95% CI), including our own data. Results:Our technical success rate was 96%. Localsensitivity was 96%, with a 95% CI from85%–99%. Seven patients were upstaged by the SNB. Aliterature search identified 18 studies published from 1996–1999.Estimates of sensitivity ranged from 83%–100%. The pooleddata meta-analysis gave a global sensitivity of 91%, with a 95%CI from 89%–93%. The area under the global SROC curve was0.9967. Conclusions:The minimally invasive SNB was shown to be apractical alternative to ALND. We propose to use local as well as globalsensitivity and associated 95% CI to test the validity of SNB in theclinical setting. Due to limitations of ALND as the golden standard, SNB canin fact be considered a more accurate method for nodal staging.

Notizen: Abstract There are increasing concerns about the ecological effects of water abstraction and in the UK, these concerns have been hightened by the 1976, 1984 and 1988-92 droughts. This paper assesses macroinvertebrate and environmental changes induced by surface and groundwater abstractions on 22 streams throughout the UK. The approach involved comparative research to assess differences between reference and impacted sites. Using a database comprising 204 sets of biological and environmental data (89 taxa and 16 environmental variables) a preliminary ordination using principle components analysis clearly differentiated three types of sites: upland, lowland and an intermediate type. At this scale, any effects of abstractions on invertebrate communities are shown to be insignificant relative to regional controls. A simultaneous ordination of the environmental and faunal differences between pairs of sites was undertaken separately for each of the three regional groups. Differences are considered as vectors having both direction and amplitude and the analysis elucidates common patterns in the faunal and environmental data. Important changes were observed in two situations: upland streams affected by major diversions as part of hydro-power schemes in Scotland and lowland rivers impacted by groundwater abstractions. No strong patterns of change (either in amplitude or orientation) were demonstrated within any of the taxonomic groups. However, within the upland type some rheophilous taxa were shown typically to be reduced in abundance at impacted sites. Within the lowland type, a consistent pattern in the dataset is demonstrated by a group of taxa that are reduced in abundance at the impacted sites.

Notizen: Abstract Samples of aquatic macroinvertebrates were taken from abandoned beds of the river Rhône in the Brégnier-Cordon area. This sector of the French Upper Rhône is particularly rich in old beds or ‘lônes’ which vary in age and morphological type and have more or less direct connections with the river. Samples were collected using a hand net in eight different ‘lônes’. The results concerned five groups of fauna: Mollusca, Crustacea, Ephemeroptera, Coleoptera, Trichoptera. The study revealed a wide range of fauna, and the fact that group of taxa can be used to describe types of ‘lônes’ defined by morphological and hydrological characteristics. This kind of research adds to our understanding of how such aquatic ecosystems evolve, and may be applied in a more general way to other important river systems.

Notizen: Abstract Biodiversity of European floodplains is seriously threatened mainly due to (1) modifications of river courses such as channelisation or embankments, and (2) changes in traditional agricultural practices (i.e. usually pastures), into intensive production using drainage and fertilisation. A upstream-downstream survey of the Saône floodplain (France) has been done to identify the contribution of habitats to the floodplain biodiversity. Selected taxa were aquatic and terrestrial vegetation, Odonata, Coleoptera, Amphibians, and birds. The taxa were sampled in different habitat types that were: forests, grasslands and aquatic habitats. Tributary confluences with the river and cut-off channels contributed greatly to the floodplain diversity according to their invertebrates and aquatic vegetation communities. The abundance of rare species (benefitting of a national or regional protection status) was the highest in hygrophilous grasslands. Moreover, we demonstrated that diversity of breeding bird communities was correlated with the size of these habitats. We demonstrated also that alluvial forests contributed to maintain some particular species as Middle-spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopus medius), while new plantations were colonized by openland bird communities sensible to the edge effect. Grassland fragmentation for agriculture appeared to be a major cause in biodiversity loss. Any alteration of the floodplain dynamics must be avoided to preserve the present diversity of riverine wetlands.

Notizen: Abstract We review progress toward developing a data-analysis system using invertebrate species lists in wetland evaluation procedures. Species lists for Mollusca, Carabidae (Coleoptera), Empidoidea and Syrphidae (Diptera), derived from samples collected at six stations along a transect established at a site on the floodplain of the River Loire (France) provide the raw data. An initial analysis using a traditional ordination method (Correspondence Analysis) is carried out. A data base was established for the 118 mollusc, carabid and syrphid species recorded, and each species was then treated not as a simple integer, but as an amalgam of digitised attributes deemed responsive to wetland conditions, in a correspondence analysis on instrumental variables. Despite the generalized nature of the attributes as defined for this example, the approach demonstrates a marked increase in interpretability of the output of analysis, in respect of the relation between the species and the floodplain environment. It also highlights the value of use of data pertaining to more than one taxonomic group and of selecting these taxonomic groups on the basis of complementarity of their ‘bioindicator’ potential.
