    Notes: A fiber optical laser spot microscope, which allows the simultaneous measurements of photocurrent and reflected light intensity or the measurement of laser spot photocurrent under the illumination of other light sources, has been developed to study semiconductor/electrolyte interfaces. The capability of this microscope was demonstrated on as-cleaved and Pt-treated p-InSe. The Pt treatment increased the photocurrent and improved the lateral resolution due to the increase of surface reaction rate. The higher photocurrent was observed at the spot where the reflectivity was higher. This behavior is considered to be due to an uneven distribution of platinum. The laser spot photocurrent image under the illumination of other light sources provided useful information to clarify whether the rate was controlled by surface or bulk properties of InSe.

    Notes: The stability towards photoelectrochemical (PEC) etching in hexacyanoferrate (II) (=R) solution has been determined for a set of single-crystalline ternary alloys in the series GaAs1−yPy (0〈y〈0.8), using the rotating ring-disk electrode technique. It was found that the stability coefficient S increases monotonicaly but nonlinearly from a low value in the GaAs end to near 1 for y=0.8. The data are consistent with a kinetic model involving competition between decomposition and hole transfer from the valence band edge to R with a probability determined by the thermal fluctuating energy level model. The findings are of potential interest in using selective PEC etching in preparing structures in optoelectronics and multilayer heterostructures for high-speed electronics.

    Notes: A multijunction structure, Ga(As,P)/GaAs/Ga(As,P)/n+-GaAs, and a conventional Ga(As,P)/n+-GaAs structure were compared using a variety of photoelectrochemical (PEC) techniques. The samples were grown, using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition, on n+-GaAs substrates with an initial graded region with gradually varying composition. The conventional sample had a terminating top layer with constant composition GaAs0.45 P0.55. In the multijunction sample, a GaAs region was introduced between the graded region and the top layer, resulting in an interface with an abrupt heterojunction. The multijunction electrode showed several unusual PEC features, including a very low dark current over a wide potential region, both cathodic and anodic photoeffects, and a pronounced decrease in photoactivity when going to shorter wavelengths. A plausible interpretation is presented, also providing insights into the effects of graded regions versus heterojunctions, and illustrating the value of PEC studies in probing the interior of complex semiconductor materials.

    Notes: Nodularin (Nod), produced by the brackish/marine cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena, is a potent hepatotoxin, tumor promoter and is possibly carcinogenic to mammals. It is structurally and toxicologically related to the microcystins, produced by Microcystis aeruginosa in fresh water. A better understanding of the kinetics of Nod production might provide an insight into the physiological and ecological function of cyanobacterial hepatotoxins. The present study presents a simple model simulating the concentration of Nod in N. spumigena KAC66 during phosphorus-limited growth. The main assumption of the model is that the Nod production rate is proportional to the chlorophyll-a (Chla) concentration. The model was tuned to data from phosphorus-limited batch cultures of N. spumigena KAC66 at saturating light and was able to predict 96% or more of the variation in both Chla and Nod concentration. No significant effect of available nitrogen source was found on the Chla-specific Nod production rate although specific growth rates were higher in ammonium and nitrate grown cultures compared to cultures grown with N2 as the sole nitrogen source. Literature data on microcystin production by M. aeruginosa in phosphorus-limited chemostats fitted the model predictions well, except at very low dilution rates (0.1 day−1). The good fit with the proposed model to our own and literature data suggests that the production of hepatotoxic cyanotoxins is not regulated upon growth reduction due to phosphate limitation.

    Notes: Abstract Phytoplankton have traditionally been regarded as strictly phototrophic, with a well defined position at the base of pelagic food webs. However, recently we have learned that the nutritional demands of a growing number of phytoplankton species can be met, at least partially, or under specific environmental conditions, through heterotrophy. Mixotrophy is the ability of an organism to be both phototrophic and heterotrophic, in the latter case utilizing either organic particles (phagotrophy) or dissolved organic substances (osmotrophy). This finding has direct implications for our view on algal survival strategies, particularly for harmful species, and energy- and nutrient flow in pelagic food webs. Mixotrophic species may outcompete strict autotrophs, e.g. in waters poor in inorganic nutrients or under low light. In the traditional view of the ‘microbial loop’ DOC is thought to be channeled from algal photosynthesis to bacteria and then up the food chain through heterotrophic flagellates, ciliates and mesozooplankton. Are mixotrophic phytoplankton that feed on bacteria also significantly contributing to this transport of photosynthetic carbon up the food chain? How can we estimate the fluxes of carbon and nutrients between different trophic levels in the plankton food web involving phagotrophic algae? These questions largely remain unanswered. In this review we treat evidence for both osmotrophy and phagotrophy in phytoplankton, especially toxic marine species, and some ecological implications of mixotrophy.

    Description: Background: There is limited knowledge on the prevalence of disease in total populations. Such studies have historically been difficult to conduct but the development of health data registers has facilitated large-scale studies on recorded diagnoses in entire regions. The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence of diagnosis of six common diseases in the Swedish capital region. Methods: The study population included all living persons who resided in Stockholm County, Sweden, on December 31st 2011 (N = 2 093 717). Information on all consultations between 2007 and 2011 was obtained from primary health care, specialist outpatient care and inpatient care. Prevalence was defined as the proportion of individuals with a recorded diagnosis of diabetes, depression, anxiety disorders, hypertension, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease during the five year period, respectively. Analyses were done by age and gender. Results: Hypertension had the highest five-year prevalence (12.2%), followed by depression (6.6%), diabetes mellitus (6.2%), asthma (5.9%), anxiety disorders/phobia (4.8%), and COPD (1.8%). Diabetes was more common in men (5.3% of women and 7.1% of men) while depression (8.7% in women and 4.4% in men) and anxiety (6.3% in women and 3.4% in men) were considerably more common in women. Smaller gender differences were also found for hypertension (13.0% in women and 11.4% in men), asthma (6.4% in women and 5.4% in men) and COPD (2.1% in women and 1.6% in men). Diabetes, hypertension and COPD increased markedly with age, whereas anxiety, depression and asthma were fairly constant in individuals above 18 years. During one year of observation, more than half of all patients had only been diagnosed in primary health care, with hypertension being the diagnosis with the largest proportion of patients only identified in primary health care (70.6%). Conclusion: The prevalence of common diseases in the population can be estimated by combining data gathered during consecutive years from primary care, specialist outpatient care and inpatient care. However, accuracy of disease prevalence is highly dependent on the quality of the data. The high prevalence of the six diagnoses analysed in this study calls for preventive action to minimize suffering and costs to society.

    Description: Background: Currently, the mental health issues of traumatized refugees are mainly documented in terms of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. Importantly, there are no reports of the level of psychiatric disability in treatment seeking traumatized refugees resettled in the West. Insufficient acknowledgment of the collective load of bio-psycho-social problems in this patient group hinders effective psychiatric and social service utilization outside the specialized clinics for traumatized refugees. Methods: The level of psychiatric disability in traumatized refugees from Danish specialized clinics (N = 448) is documented using routine monitoring data from pre- and post-treatment on the Health of Nation Outcome Scales (HoNOS). Furthermore, the HoNOS ratings are compared with routine monitoring data from Danish inpatients with different diagnoses (N = 10.911). Results: The routinely collected data indicated that despite their outpatient status, traumatized refugees had higher levels of psychiatric disability at pre-treatment compared to most inpatients. Moreover, the traumatized refugees had a HoNOS profile characterized by an overall high problem level in various psychiatric and social domains. The rate of pre- to post-treatment improvement on the HoNOS was smaller for the traumatized refugees than it was for the psychiatric inpatients. Conclusions: The level, and the versatile profile, of psychiatric disability on the HoNOS point to complex bio-psycho-social problems in resettled treatment seeking traumatized refugees. Thus, a broader assessment of symptoms and better cooperation between psychiatric, health care, and social systems is necessary in order to meet the treatment needs of this group.
