    Notes: Summary The case is reported of a young girl who was bitten on the hand by a viper and developed compartment syndrome of the intrinsic muscles more than 24 h later. Multiple dorsal and volar fasciotomies resolved the acute episode with complete restitutio ad integrum. The clinical case is discussed in detail and the literature on these rare complications of snake bites in European countries reviewed.

    Description: We report on the epitaxial growth of Ge virtual substrates directly on Si (001) and on different porosity porous silicon (pSi) buffers. Obtained results indicate that Ge grown on low porosity (22%) pSi buffer has a better crystalline quality compared to Ge grown on bulk Si and on higher porosity buffers. This result is attributed to the compliant nature of pSi and to its reduced Young's modulus, which leads to plastic tensile deformation of the 22% porosity buffer under the in-plane tensile stress introduced by Ge lattice. The same result is not observed for higher porosity buffers, this effect being attributed to the higher buffer fragility. A low porosity pSi layer can hence be used as buffer for the growth of Ge on Si virtual substrates with reduced dislocation content and for the growth of Ge based devices or the successive integration of III-V semiconductors on Si.

    Description: A multidisciplinary field campaign was carried out at Nisyros Island (Greece). Hydrothermal gases were sampled and analysed, and CH4 and CO2 fluxes from the soils were measured with the accumulation chamber method. The sampling area (Lakki plain) covers an area of about 0.08 km2, and includes the main fumarolic areas of Kaminakia, Stefanos, Ramos, Lofos and Phlegeton. Flux values measured at 130 sites range from −3.4 to 1420 mg m−2 d−1 for CH4 and from 0.1 to 383 g m−2 d−1 for CO2. The fumarolic areas show very different CH4 degassing patterns, Kaminakia showing the highest CH4 output values (about 0.8 t a−1 from an area of about 30,000 m2) and Phlegeton the lowest (about 0.01 t a−1 from an area of about 2500 m2). The total output from the entire geothermal system of Nisyros should not exceed 2 t a−1. Previous indirect estimates of the CH4 output at Nisyros, based on soil CO2 output and CH4/CO2 ratios in fumarolic gases, were more than one order of magnitude higher. The present work further underscores the utmost importance of direct CH4 flux data because indirect methods totally disregard methanotrophic activity within the soil. Ten soil samples were collected for CH4 consumption experiments and for metagenomic analysis. Seven of the soil samples showed small but significant CH4 consumption (up to 39.7 ng g−1 h−1) and were positive for the methanotrophs-specific gene (pmoA) confirming microbial CH4 oxidation in the soil, notwithstanding the harsh environmental conditions (high temperature and H2S concentrations and low pH).

    Description: Samples of efflorescences and encrustations of hydrothermal origin were collected at Sousaki (Greece) and analysed for their mineralogical (XRD) and chemical composition. Solutions obtained both from mineralization with HNO3 and from leaching with deionised water were analysed for major (ICP-OES), minor and trace metals (ICP-MS) and sulfate contents (IC). Results evidence the dependence of the chemical and mineralogical composition on micro-environmental conditions i.e. humidity, oxygen-rich or -poor environment, exposed or sheltered from meteoric agents. In fact, the presence of highly soluble sulfate minerals with elevated contents of many metals (e.g. Mg, Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, Ni, etc.) further underscores the important influence of hydrothermal activity on elements' mobility, whilst the sometimes very high concentrations in toxic elements like Al, Cr, Ni suggest also possible environmental impacts.

    Description: The complex geology of Greece includes two important parallel running ophiolitic belts. The Othrys Massif in central Greece belongs to the westernmost of them. In the current study, 33 water samples from cold hyperalkaline and hypothermal (T 〈 40°C) alkaline springs and 30 gas samples (either dissolved or free) were collected at 17 different sites in and around this wide ophiolite outcrop, aiming to determine the origin of fluids and evidence gas-water-rock interaction processes taking place in the area. Water samples were analysed for their chemical (major ions and trace elements) and isotope (d18O-H2O, d2H-H2O) composition. They can be subdivided into alkaline (pH 〈11) of both Mg-Ca-HCO3 and Na-HCO3 composition and hyperalkaline (pH 〉 11 and Ca-OH composition). Trace elements generally showed very low concentrations and mostly inversely correlated with pH. Gases were analysed for their chemical (He, Ne, Ar, H2, O2, N2, CH4, C2H6, CO2 and H2S) and isotope (d13C-CH4, d2H-CH4, d13C-CO2) composition. Samples from alkaline waters were mainly dominated by CH4 (from 128,000 to 915,000 µmol/mol), while hyperalkaline waters showed a N2-rich composition (from 727,000 to 977,000 µmol/mol). Methane had a wide range of isotope compositions (d13C-CH4 from -74.5 to -14.5‰ and d2H-CH44 from -343 to -62‰). Alkaline waters present the most negative isotope values for CH4, evidencing a biogenic (both thermogenic and microbial) origin. Many of the hyperalkaline waters had CH4 isotope values compatible with an abiogenic origin through serpentinization processes but occasionaly very negative values were recorded, indicating sometimes a clear biogenic contribution. Finally, few samples both from alkaline and hyperalkaline waters showed some evidence of secondary oxidation processes.

    Description: Greece belongs to the most geodynamically active regions of the world and as such, it has to be considered an area of intense geogenic degassing. In terms of carbon, the territory is characterized by the high hydrothermal and volcanic activity of the South Aegean Active Volcanic Arc (SAAVA), and by widespread geological seeps of buried carbon dioxide and methane. In the present work, we investigate the island of Gyali located in the volcanic system Kos-Gyali-Nisyros. Nine gas samples have been collected on the island of Gyali in areas found both on land, in a small lake (~2000 m2) along its beach, and in the sea close to the shore at shallow depths (〈20 m). Results show that CO2 is the prevailing gas species with concentrations above 833,000 μmol/mol, whilst minor enrichments in N2 are noticed in some of the samples. Helium isotope ratio suggests an up to 70% mantle origin (considering a MOR type source) with the contribution of the atmospheric component being negligible, whereas C presents a mixed mantle-limestone origin with organic sediment being unimportant. Such isotope values fall in the range that characterizes the Kos-Gyali- Nisyros Volcanic Field. First estimations on the CO2 release suggest an output in the range from 18 to 28 t/d for Gyali Island, which is much lower than the total output of Kos ~75 t/d and Nisyros ~100 t/d. However, such results highlight that Gyali is an active system and, despite its small size, its degassing is not trivial.

    Description: Geothermal areas of Greece are located in regions affected by recent volcanism and in continental basins characterised by elevated heat flow. Many of them are found along the coast, and thus, water is often saline due to marine intrusion. In the current study, we present about 300 unpublished and literature data from thermal and cold mineral waters collected along Greece. Samples were analysed for major ions, Li, SiO2 and isotopes in water. Measured temperatures range from 6.5 to 98 °C, pH from 1.96 to 11.98, while Total Dissolved Solutes (TDS) from 0.22 to 51 g/L. Waters were subdivided into four main groups: (1) thermal; (2) cold; (3) acidic (pH 〈 5); and (4) hyperalkaline (pH 〉 11). On statistical basis, thermal waters were subdivided into subgroups according to both their temperature [warm (〈 29 °C), hypothermal (29–48 °C), thermal (48–75 °C) and hyperthermal (〉 75 °C)] and TDS [low salinity (〈 4 g/L), brackish (4–30 g/L) and saline (〉 30 g/L)]. Cold waters were subdivided based on their pCO2 [low (〈 0.05 atm), medium (0.05–0.85 atm) and high (〉 0.85 atm)]. δ18O–H2O ranges from − 12.7 to + 2.7‰ versus SMOW, while δ2H–H2O from − 91 to + 12‰ versus SMOW being generally comprised between the Global Meteoric Water Line and the East Mediterranean Meteoric Water Line. Positive δ18O shifts with respect to the former are mostly related to mixing with seawater, while only for a few samples these shifts point to high-temperature water–rock interaction processes. Only a few thermal waters gave reliable geothermometric estimates, suggesting reservoir temperatures between 80 and 260 °C.

    Description: The concepts of CO2 emission, global warming, climate change, and their environmental impacts are of utmost importance for the understanding and protection of the ecosystems. Among the natural sources of gases into the atmosphere, the contribution of geogenic sources plays a crucial role. However, while subaerial emissions are widely studied, submarine outgassing is not yet well understood. In this study, we review and catalog 122 literature and unpublished data of submarine emissions distributed in ten coastal areas of the Aegean Sea. This catalog includes descriptions of the degassing vents through in situ observations, their chemical and isotopic compositions, and flux estimations. Temperatures and pH data of surface seawaters in four areas affected by submarine degassing are also presented. This overview provides useful information to researchers studying the impact of enhanced seawater CO2 concentrations related either to increasing CO2 levels in the atmosphere or leaking carbon capture and storage systems.
