    Notes: In children, patient controlled analgesia (PCA) and continuous infusion (CI) of morphine are well established methods of relieving postoperative pain. This study was designed to assess the efficacy of PCA plus background infusion (BI) (15 μg·kg−1·h−1 and bolus doses of 15 μg·kg−1 with a lock-out interval of 10 min) with CI (20 to 40 μg·kg−1·h−1) in terms of analgesia, morphine needs and side-effects. A stratified randomized controlled trial was carried out. 47 children aged 5–18 years undergoing major elective lower/upper abdominal or spinal surgery were allocated. The magnitude of surgery was assessed by the Severity of Surgical Stress scoring (SSS) system. Pain was assessed by self-report every three h. Side-effects compatible with morphine as well as morphine consumption were recorded. Morphine consumption was significantly increased in the PCA group compared with the CI group. Moreover, morphine consumption was associated with SSS, independent of the technique of administration. There were no significant differences between groups in pain scores or in the incidence of side-effects.

    Description: It is usually assumed that metabolic constraints restrict deep-sea corals to cold-water habitats, with ‘deep-sea’ and ‘cold-water’ corals often used as synonymous. Here we report on the first measurements of biological characters of deep-sea corals from the central Red Sea, where they occur at temperatures exceeding 20°C in highly oligotrophic and oxygen-limited waters. Low respiration rates, low calcification rates, and minimized tissue cover indicate that a reduced metabolism is one of the key adaptations to prevailing environmental conditions. We investigated four sites and encountered six species of which at least two appear to be undescribed. One species is previously reported from the Red Sea but occurs in deep cold waters outside the Red Sea raising interesting questions about presumed environmental constraints for other deep-sea corals. Our findings suggest that the present understanding of deep-sea coral persistence and resilience needs to be revisited.

    Description: The Red Sea has long been recognized as a region of high biodiversity and endemism. Despite this diversity and early history of scientific work, our understanding of the ecology of coral reefs in the Red Sea has lagged behind that of other large coral reef systems. We carried out a quantitative assessment of ISI-listed research published from the Red Sea in eight specific topics (apex predators, connectivity, coral bleaching, coral reproductive biology, herbivory, marine protected areas, non-coral invertebrates and reef associated bacteria) and compared the amount of research conducted in the Red Sea to that of the Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and the Caribbean. On average, for these eight topics, the Red Sea had 1/6th the amount of research compared to the GBR and about 1/8th the amount of the Caribbean. Further, more than 50% of the published research from the Red Sea originated from the Gulf of Aqaba, a small area (〈 2% of the area of the Red Sea) in the far northern Red Sea. We summarize the general state of knowledge in these eight topics and highlight areas of future research priorities for the Red Sea region. Notably, data that could inform science-based management approaches is badly lacking in most Red Sea countries. The Red Sea, as a geologically “young” sea located in one of the warmest regions of the world, has the potential to provide insight to pressing topics such as speciation processes as well as the capacity of reef systems and organisms to adapt to global climate change. As one of the world’s most biodiverse coral reef regions, the Red Sea may yet have a significant role to play in our understanding of coral reef ecology at a global scale.
