Description: Alpha ventus was the first German offshore wind farm build in the German exclusive economic zone in 2008/2009. The data are part of the mandatory monitoring programme of the German Standard Investigation of the Impacts of Offshore Wind Turbines on the Marine Environment (latest version: StUK 4, published by BSH 2014). Makrozoobenthos was collected in the offshore wind farm alpha ventus at four wind turbines at different depth (epifouling communities), distance-dependent to the turbines in the soft bottom, as well as randomly within the soft bottom of the offshore wind farm area and in a comparable reference area nearby. Samples were taken by scrape samples with scuba divers to analyse the epifaunal communities and with van-Veen grabs to analyse the infauna. Soft-bottom samples in the wind farm and reference area were collected in spring and autumn from 2008-2012 before, during and after construction (until three years) of the wind farm. After construction of the turbines, epifaunal community was evaluated for recording successional stages of growth on the wind turbines in different depth to cover the vertical zonation along the turbines (at 1, 5 and 10 m depth). Further, soft-bottom samples were collected distance dependent to the turbines 100, 200 and 400 m apart from the turbines. Biodiversity data of species include abundance (count data) and biomass (wet mass, g) per sample. Data were sampled on behalf of the DOTI GmbH & Co. KG in the framework of the mandatory monitoring and collected and quality controlled by the Federal Martime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in cooperation with AWI. Thus, we would like to thank the DOTI GmbH, particularly Magdalena Buchholz on behalf of the DOTI GmbH, as well as the BSH, in particular Dr. Maria Boethling, who kindly provided the data for scientific independent research analysis and publication.

Description: The standard concept for the investigation of the impacts of offshore wind turbines on the marine environment (StUK) of the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) prescribes extensive investigations on the benthic communities of the seafloor as well as on the fouling assemblages on the underwater structures of offshore wind turbines. The construction of the test site alpha ventus allowed for the first time for testing the appropriate-ness of these investigations. In the present sub-project of the StUKplus research project, the investigations according to StUK3 (BSH, 2007) were spatially and temporally extended in order to test for effects on the benthic system which could otherwise not be revealed by the StUK procedures. In the first work package of the sub-project an additional complete sam-pling campaign according to StUK was performed in the second year of the operational phase of the wind farm. The results of this work package indicate differential temporal variations of the benthic communities and of sedimentological parameters inside the wind farm and in a reference area outside the wind farm. However, the differences were mainly temporary fluctuations while persistent effects of the construction and operation of the wind farm on the benthos were not evident. Solely the biomass and species richness of the fouling assemblage on the underwater structures increased continuously since the construction of the turbines. In the second work package the turbine-related effect monitoring of the benthic communities of the seafloor was extended to the entire distance between two neighbouring turbines. No ef-fects of the turbines on the benthos and the sediment could be detected in this work package. The spatial resolution of the turbine-related effect monitoring was inadequate for detecting processes which occur in the vicinity of the turbine foundations. In none of the two work packages did the spatial and temporal extension of the benthos monitoring provide additional findings. However, deficiencies of the benthos ecological investigations according to StUK3 became evident and improvements could be deduced.

Description: 1,244 species out of nine phyla of macrozoobenthos have been evaluated for the Red Lists of invertebrate species in German North Sea and Baltic Sea waters (including the Exclusive Economic Zone). It is evident that the conditions in these marine waters are basically not better than ashore, since human impact like, first of all, demersal fishing and eutrophication as well as impact on coastal water biotopes have led to massive changes in several animal populations. 32 % of all species assessed are found in the Red Lists. However, more than half of these species are extremely rare and therefore assessed as potentially threatened. Altogether data are still insufficient for any trend analysis in more than 36 % of all evaluated 1,244 species (see high share in category „D“). Due to increases in knowledge and specific investigations on selected taxa it is expected that in a few years updated Red Lists can be provided, maybe covering the entire ecosystems of the North and Baltic Seas.
