Description: Beaks of Loliginid squids have very similar morphological features making identification of the species to be quite difficult. A new metodology to identify species from the relative growth of some parts of the beak is presented. Samples of Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensiswere obtained from ten reserch cruises of RVS "Dr. Holmberg" and "Captain Oca Balda" and eight commercial landings at Mar del Plata Port during the period 1992-1993. The results obtained using the new metodology (Metric Discriminant Criterium)were compared with those resulting from the application of the Fisher's Lineal Discriminant Criterium. Both mantle length - rostral length and total weight - rostral length relationships, corresponding to each species were fitted. Either upper or lower part of the beak can be used.

Description: The Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone and the problem of the hake catch quota allocation. The aim of this paper is to present the problem of the catch quota in the shared zone and the proposals related to the maximum catch from 1976 to 1998. The state of the population which inhabits the Common Fishing Zone and north of 41°S is diagnosed, concluding that the total biomass has declined in this period and the spawning stock biomass is under the allowable biological catches. In addition, the catch per unit effort (CPUE)of the commercial fleet has a declining tendency and the total effort is duplicated. Biological population characteristics are presented: reproduction, feeding, nursery grounds and closed areas to protect juveniles. Proportional allocations for the shared zone and for the area between 39° 30´S and 41° S are estimated. The current framework reference to define the maximum catch for the northern hake stock is considered.

Description: To accurately assess fish and invertebrate populations, the catch values obtained in research surveys are converted to absolute values considering the swept area and fishing gear efficiency. In the 1998-2007 period, Zygochlamys patagonica at Argentine Sea assessment surveys were carried out on board of the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP) research vessels using the dredge as fishing gear. Between 2008 and 2012 they were performed on board of commercial vessels of the scallop fleet with the net proper to each vessel. In order to normalize the temporal series of basic data, in this work the relative fishing power and the relative efficiency between both fishing gears were estimated. Considering the 0.5 dredge efficiency value currently applied, an estimate of 0.3468 net efficiency was obtained. Said result is valid for the vessel, fishing gear, dredge, management unit and time of the year in which the experience took place. The need of estimating the true efficiency of the dredge used in Patagonian scallop biomass assessment through an experimental ad hoc study is hereby emphasized.

Description: The pre-stratified design hitherto used to evaluate the winter biomass of the main coastal demersal species within the Aragentine - Uruguay Common Fishing Zone is reviewed. That design involved 21 strata. A new criterion to build strata is proposed, and the winter biomass of white croaker estimated 24,595 t ± 46.55 o/o by new criterian (6 strata). A further post-estratification method was performed to identify the main areas of commercial fishing, and their corresponding size structure of croaker. According to this procedure, the biomass was evaluated to be about 19,719 t ± 22.09 o/o. The new survey design reduced the total area to be covered by 24 o/o. Therefore, it allows for increasing sampling effort withing the most important areas of coastal fish distribution.

Description: The total length distribution of pink cuskeel Genypterus blacodes catches is difficult to obtain. On the contrary, it is easy to have access to the head length distribution. So, the purpose of this study was to obtain a relationship between a certain head measurement and total length to estimate the length distribution of the catches. Individuals were obtained from bottom-trawl surveys between 39°-47°S and the San Jorge Gulf of the Argentine sea. Sets of measurements of total length (LT), maxillar length (Lmax), head length (Lc),orbital length (Lo), preorbital length (Lpo) and head length-total length ratio (r=Lc/LT) by sex were obtained. The total length was estimated with a regression model using the head length as independent variable. No significant differences between males and females were found. The combined relationship was LT= 0.737638+ Lc 4.632991. With this relationship, the length distribution of catches of each area, of total area and of other cruises were estimated. For a length range distribution of 4 cm, the coincidence percentage between the observed and estimated length distribution was higher than 87. in all areas. The head length increased with size while the head length-total length ratio was around 20 for both sexes.

Description: This work deals with the structure and efficiency of the fleet fishing white croaker in Argentina. Results show that there exist two strata delimited by 17.25 m length and 345 HP vessels. The most efficient is constituted by those of smaller dimensions. During 1992-1995 landings were sampled and subsequently analyzed. A decrease in mean length landed and an increase of juveniles presence were detected. The situation coincided with an increment of catches, landings, fishing effort, exports and the fleet activities in "El Salado" area (35° 57' - 36° 57' LS).

Description: Based on the comparison between length composition of landings and that of research cruises, filtered by the selectivity of the mesh used by the commercial fleet, to rebuild length distribution of catches, an indirect quantitative method was developed and used to estimate, in weight and number, the individuals discarded by the commercial fleet south of 41° S. Discards ranged between 15,563 and 46,113 annual tons in the 1986-1993 period which represented 10-13% in weight and 28-32% in number of actual catches, composed of around 87% of individuals age group 1, 12% of age group 2 and the rest of individuals age groups 0 and 3.

Description: The study is part of an approach to ecosystem changes with impact on populations, multiple equilibria states, possible irreversibility of population status and great uncertainty. Biological processes are formalized and are studied conditions for biological sustainability. The biological sustainability of an age-structured population requires both to achieve stability in the age structure and abundance. Minimum conditions for the existence of a stable age structure and convergence are established, regardless of the initial state, the population structure towards it. The recruitment function is generally possibly nonlinear and unknown. The age specific survival probabilities are assumed constant. Is formulated the called 'Problem of End Equilibrium' (PEE), in which is searched the minimum of the maximum age specific survival probabilities, such that in the best reproductive / environmental condition, the population persists. The existence and uniqueness of a solution is proved for this problem. There is a maximum skewed toward juveniles of the stable age structure for biological sustainability. This result is consistent with the reproductive biology of many species of fish. Then, there are obtained some ergodic biological sustainability indicators and its limits. Criteria for rejection-acceptance a survival probability vector as biologically sustainable, is formulated. An application to the Argentina hake (Merluccius hubbsi) takes place south of 41°S (Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic ocean) of the results obtained in this thesis.

Description: This work reports on the inter rod distance in a single sorting grid adapted for the escape of hake juveniles. A good performance of the device was reported due to the DEJUPA trials carried out in April 1997. In may 1998 a new survey with DEJUPA was carrie out with 30 mm, 33 mm, and 40 mm separation distance bars, in order to optimise the escape of the species at first length maturity (35 cm). Selectivity curves with maximum likelihood method were obtained for each inter rod distance being the length at 50. (L50) 29, 32 and 37 respectively. A weighd lineal regression (Feasible General Squares Model) between L50 and inter rod distance was fitted from each L50 estimated variance. An estimation of 37 mm inter rod distance for L50=35 cm total length was obtained by inverse regression. In this opportunity a special design for the retention codend was attached to the outlets of the DEJUPA in order to retain the escape of fishes. With the aim of retaining the whole fish distribution a blinded codend was used in the bottom trawl net, therefore every haul in this experience became a complete experiment.
