Notes: Abstract Based on the phenomenon of freezing point depression of a solvent byΔT, experimental evidence is presented to show that the distance between the junction points can be calculated fromΔT. Direct measurements of the temperature-time-curve of the cooling network and the Differential Scanning Calorimetry offer the determination ofΔT. Except the mean distances ¯d c in dependence on cross-linking density, swelling degree, and other network parameters, the distribution of the distance between the junction pointsH(dc) can be determined, which allows conclusions on the course of cross-linking reaction. This paper attempts to give experimental evidence of influences of the breadth ofH(dc) on application-relevant properties.

Notes: Summary The elastic behavior (uniaxial compression measurements) of PDMS-networks swollen in pure solvents of different thermodynamic quality is described. The results are discussed in the framework of the model for phantom networks. It is shown that the calculated MC is a function of the swelling degree and that the corresponding curve consists of two different parts. The shape of the first part can be explained by a change of the microstructure factor A and the second by a change of the memory term η.

Description / Table of Contents: Vinylchloride was grafted onto low-density polyethylene (PE-ND). The graft copolymer was characterized by light scattering. Dehalogenating dehydration resulted in polyethylene containing a defined higher number of long-chain branches than the backbone polyethylene of the graft copolymer. The intrinsic viscosity of the model polyethylene was determined at various values of molecular weight and contraction factors are calculated.

Description / Table of Contents: With fractinated and non-fractionated samples of polyethylene in various solvents at different temperatures the values of Mw, 〈r2〉z and A2 were determined. The increase of molecular weight on approaching the precipitation temperature and the second virial coefficient show that polyethylene is comparatively poorly dissolved and the big polymer molecules are of spherical shape.

Description / Table of Contents: Transition phenomena in swollen and unswollen polymer networks are investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry method. The transition temperatures and heats of 1,4-cis-polybutadiene with different degrees of crosslinking are discussed in relation to the structural parameters of the polymer network.

Description / Table of Contents: The activity of the solvent in a swollen polymer network is determined by means of a vapour pressure osmometer. The evaluation of the results based on the Flory-Rehner concept proves this method to be appropriate to determine simultaneously Mc and the Huggins interaction parameter χ for networks with Mc 〈 104 g·mol-1, but to determine only % and its concentration dependence for networks with Mc 〉 104 g·mol-1.

Description / Table of Contents: The concentration and temperature dependence of the Huggins interaction parameter of natural rubber crosslinked by sulfur, and 1,4-cis-polybutadiene samples crosslinked by electron and γ-irradiation in the solvents benzene, cyclohexane and dioxane is determined experimentally and discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: By literature data the molecular contraction, being a measure of long chain branching, was proved to depend on the thermodynamic state of disslution. By investigations on the state of dissolution of branched and linear polyethylene, molecule aggregates were found to be formed on approximating the precipitation temperature.

Description / Table of Contents: Light scattering and viscosity measurements with PE-HD fractions in n-decane were carried out. Based on the dependence of the radius of gyration on the molecular weight the PE-HD molecules are suggested to contract. The experimental scattering function of the high molecular weight fraction corresponds to that of spherical particles. The lg [η]-lg Mw relationship shows no linearity but increases less with rising molecular weight and decreasing temperature.
