Notes: Abstract: 68 lakes (63 Swiss, 2 French and 3 Italian) located in an altitudinal range between 334 and 2339m spanning a wide range of land-use have been investigated. The aim of the study was to discuss influences of geographic location, vegetation and land-use in the catchment area on the water and sediment chemistry of small lakes. Detailed quantitative description of land-use, vegetation, and climate in the watershed of all lakes was established. Surface and bottom water samples collected from each lake were analyzed for major ions and nutrients. Correlations were interpreted using linear regression analysis. Chemical parameters of water and sediment reflect the characteristics of the catchment areas. All lakes were alkaline since they were situated on calcareous bedrock. Concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus strongly increase with increasing agricultural land-use. Na and K, however, are positively correlated with the amount of urbanization within the catchment area. These elements as well as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), Mg, Ca, and alkalinity, increase when the catchment is urbanized or used for agriculture. Total nitrogen and organic carbon in the sediments decrease distinctly if large parts of the catchment consist of bare land. No correlations between sediment composition and maximum water depth or altitude of the lakes were found.¶Striking differences in the water compositions of lakes above and below approximately 700 m of altitude were observed. Concentrations of total nitrogen and nitrate, total phosphorus, DOC, Na, K, Mg, Ca, and alkalinity are distinctly higher in most lakes below 700 m than above, and the pH of the bottom waters of these lakes is generally lower. Estimates of total nitrogen concentrations, even in remote areas, indicate that precipitation is responsible for increased background concentrations. At lower altitudes nitrogen concentrations in lakes is explained by the nitrogen loaded rain from urban areas deposited on the catchment, and with high percentages of agricultural land-use in the watershed.

Notes: Abstract Four different methods of radiolabelling the anti-granulocyte monoclonal antibody MAW were compared and their influence on diagnostic value studied. The best clinical images were obtained following labelling with iodine-123 by the Iodogen method and direct labelling with technetium-99m after tris-(carboxyethyl)-phosphine treatment of MAW to achieve disulphide bridge reduction.99mTc labelling using a specific ligand (MAb47-mtp), or a second method involving direct reduction with mercaptoethanol, led to an increased background activity in clinical studies, thus impeding the diagnosis of chronic disease. Fresh infections were clearly localized by all four preparations. The elimination of the activity from the blood was slower in the case of the iodinated MAb47, while the collected urine samples showed an excrection of about 10% of the injected activity per day independent of the labelling method. The results in terms of sensitivity and specificity were rather similar for all labelling methods and ranged from 90% to 99%.

Notes: The [2 + 2]-cycloaddition of dichloroketene (prepared in situ from CCl3COCl and Zn(Cu)) with three alkynes 1a-c to form 2,3-dimethyl-(2a), 2,3-diethyl-(2b) and 3-butyl-4,4-dichlorocyclobut-2-enone (2c) proceeds rapidly in the absence of POCl3. The primary products 2a-c rearrange in situ to the 2,4-dichlorocyclobut-2-enones 3a-c under the influence of ZnCL2 produced during the reaction. ZnCl2 converts both 2a and 3a into a 4:6 equilibrium mixture of the two; this isomerization does not occur with LiCl. The Cl-atoms of both 2a, b and 3a, band of 2c may reductively be removed with Zn(Cu) in AcOH/pyridine to afford the alkylcyclobutenones 4a-c. Without pyridine, this reduction gives ca. 1:1 mixtures of the double-bond isomers 4 and 5 in low yields. The cyclobutenones 2c and 4c may be deuterated by CD3COOD in the presence of pyridine. D-Atom is introduced into 2c at C(4) and at C(γ), and into 4c at C(2) and C(4). A mechanism for this deuteration is considered, which does not involve a cyclobutadienolate 7, but rather a cyclobutenolate of type 8. The reductions of 2 and 3 to 4 might also pass through the same type of intermediate 8.
