Notizen: The purpose of this research was to describe perceptions of infant health, caregiving at home, and help seeking by mothers of low birthweight (LBW) infants (n= 30) and mothers of normal birthweight infants (n= 30). In this descriptive study, data were analyzed through multiple regression, t tests, and content analysis of responses to researcher-constructed questionnaires. There were statistically significant relationships between: infant health and both confidence in caregiving (R2= 0.18, p 〈 0.001) and caregiver burden (R2= 0.29, p 〈 0.001); preparation for caregiving and confidence in caregiving (R2= 0.10, p 〈 0.05); and confidence in caregiving and caregiver burden (R2= 0.12, p 〈 0.01). Compared with mothers of normal birthweight infants, mothers of LBW infants perceived poorer infant health, t (58) =–2.02, p= 〈 0.05, and more caregiver burden, t (58) = 3.50, p= 〈 0.001. Mothers reported seeking help from a variety of resources, mostly nonprofessional for questions on infant care or nonserious infant health problems, and mostly physicians for questions on serious infant health problems. Nurses can use knowledge of mothers' perceptions of infant health, caregiving, and help seeking to facilitate mothers' management of caregiving and resource use.

Notizen: Objective Gestational diabetes is associated with increased risk of developing noninsulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM) later in life. By the time that a diagnosis of NIDDM is established, functional disturbances in the vascular system may be observed. This study was planned to assess macro- and microvascular function in nonpregnant women without signs of diabetes two to four years after a pregnancy complicated with gestational diabetes.Design Cross-sectional study.Setting Vascular research laboratory in the obstetric unit of a university hospital.Participants Seventeen nonpregnant, healthy women with a history of gestational diabetes and 20 nonpregnant control women of similar age without previous diabetes. Methods For quantification of the mechanical properties in large arterial vessels the wall movements of the abdominal aorta and left common carotid artery were recorded with an ultrasonic tracking system. Microvascular perfusion in the skin of the hand and foot was recorded by a laser Doppler technique to assess the vasodilatory response induced by transcutaneous acetylcholine. Results Women in the gestational diabetes group showed evidence of increased wall stiffness in the common carotid artery and a lower maximum incremental velocity of the pulsatile vessel diameter change in both aorta and carotid artery compared with controls. Acetylcholine induced vasodilatation in both hand and foot was lower in women with previous gestational diabetes compared with controls. Conclusion Abnormal vascular function was found in asymptomatic women with a history of gestational diabetes. It is speculated that these abnormalities might be early evidence of vascular complications associated with subsequent NIDDM.

Notizen: The expressions of 78 protein kinases, 24 protein phosphatases and 31 phosphoproteins were investigated by Kinetworks™ analysis in brain and spinal cord tissue of transgenic mice over-expressing G93A mutant superoxide dismutase (mSOD), a murine model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In the brains of affected mSOD mice, we observed increased expression of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA, 111% increase compared with control), and protein phosphatase 2B Aα-catalytic subunit (calcineurin, 109% increase), and reductions in the levels of PAK3 (76% decrease) and protein phosphatase 2C Cβ-subunit (32% decrease). Increased Ser259 phosphorylation of Raf1 (126% increase) in mSOD mice correlated with higher expression of p73 Raf1 (147% increase). There was also increased p73 Raf1 (69% increase) and Ser259 phosphorylation (45% increase) in the spinal cords of mSOD mice. While adducin underwent enhanced phosphorylation (αS724, 90% increase; γS662, 290% increase) in mSOD brain, its phosphorylation was lower in the mSOD spinal cord (αS724, 53% decrease; γS662, 46% decrease). In spinal cords of affected mSOD mice, we also observed elevated expression of casein kinase 1δ (CK1δ, 157% increase), JAK2 (84% increase), PKA (183% increase), protein kinase C (PKC) δ (123% increase), p124 PKCµ (142% increase), and RhoA kinase (221% increase), and enhanced phosphorylation of extracellular regulated kinases 1 (ERK1, T202/Y204, 90% increase), and 2 (ERK2, T185/Y187, 73% increase), p38 MAP kinase (T180/Y182, 1570% increase), and PKBα (T308, 154% increase; S473, 61% increase). There was also reduced phosphorylation of RB (S780, 45% decrease; S807/S811, 65% decrease), Src (Y418, 63% decrease) and p40 SAPK/JNKβ (T183/Y185, 43% decrease). Variability in the expression of kinases, phosphatases and phosphorylation of their substrates was observed even in mutant animals having a similar phenotype. The expression and phosphorylation differences between mSOD and control mice were dissimilar to those between ALS patients and controls. This finding indicates that the activation of protein kinases and phosphoproteins is different with neuron loss in the mSOD mouse compared with that seen in patients with the sporadic form of ALS.

Notizen: Abstract A new highly sensitive spectrophotometric method for determination traces of cadmium using Cd-(II)-KI-Crystal Violet system in the presence of Triton X-100-poly(vinyl) alcohol (PVA) mixture has been developed. The apparent molar absorptivity of the system is 1.77 × 105 1-mol−1 cm−1 and its Sandell's sensitivity is 6.35 × 10−4 μg·Cd·cm2−. Beer's law is obeyed up to 0.32 μg·Cd(II)·ml−1. The method has been applied to determine Cd(II) in waste water, rice and pork meat samples with satisfactory results.

Beschreibung: Soil macropore networks are subsurface connected void spaces caused by processes such as fracture of soils, micro-erosion, and fauna burrows. Axial X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning provides a convenient means of recording the spatial structure of soil macropore networks. The objective of this study were to (1) based on CT technique and GIS digitized image method, construction a new technique for tracing, visualizing and measuring the soil macropore networks; (2) investigate the effects of farming activities on soil macropore networks characteristics. Our technique using left-turning and nine-direction judgment methods, a combination of the layer-by-layer analysis method and the up-down tracking algorithm. The characteristics for the overall structure patterns of macropores, the spatial distribution of the macropore networks and each single macropore network can conveniently identify by our technique. Eight undisturbed soil columns from fields with two distinct land uses (under cultivation and not been cultivated) and four different depths (0-20 cm, 20-40 cm, 40-60 cm and 60-80 cm) were investigated. The soil columns were scanned using X-ray CT at a voxel resolution of 0.075 mm × 0.075 mm × 3.000 mm. Results indicate that farming activities can destroy the initial structure of macropores and those remaining are mainly small and medium-sized networks with lower extension and hydraulic conductivity. The network properties show a significant difference between upper and lower layer. The results can provide beneficial reference to further research centered on non-equilibrium flow prediction and chemical transport modeling in field soils. This article is protected by copyright. Beschreibung: Background: Many clinicians and hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected pregnant women prefer elective caesarean section (ECS) to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HBV, since some studies found higher transmission of HBV in infants born by vaginal delivery (VD) than by cesarean section. However, other studies showed that ECS does not reduce the risk of being infected with HBV in infants. In this study, we aimed to clarify whether ECS may reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HBV. Methods: Totally 546 children (1--7-year-old) born to 544 HBsAg-positive mothers from 15 cities and rural areas across Jiangsu Province, China, were enrolled. Of these children, 137 (2 pairs of twins) were born to HBeAg-positive mothers; 285 were delivered by ECS and 261 others by VD (one pair of twin in each group). HBV serologic markers were tested by enzyme or microparticle immunoassay. Results: The maternal and gestational ages, maternal HBeAg-positive rates, and children's ages, gender ratios, hepatitis B vaccine coverage and administrations of HBIG were comparable between ECS and VD groups (all p 〉0.05). The overall prevalence of HBsAg in the 546 children was 2.4%, with 2.5% (7/285) and 2.3% (6/261) in those born by ECS and VD respectively (p = 0.904). Further comparison of chronic HBV infection in the 137 children of HBeAg-positive mothers showed that the HBsAg-positive rates in ECS and VD groups were 10.3% (7/68) and 8.7% (6/69) respectively (p = 0.750), while the mothers had similar HBV DNA levels (2.38 x 106 vs. 2.35 x 106 IU/ml, p = 0.586). Additionally, the overall rate of anti-HBs 〉=10 mIU/ml in the children was 71.6%, with 72.3% and 70.9% in those born by ECS and VD respectively (p = 0.717). Conclusions: With the recommended immunoprophylaxis against hepatitis B, ECS does not reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HBV. Therefore, ECS should not be used in HBsAg-positive pregnant women to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HBV.
