    Abstract: Tossa ( Corchorus olitorius L.) is a significant cash crop, cultivated commercially in the lower flood plain of Bangladesh. The climatic regimes in Bangladesh are changing as well as the world does. However, this species is threatened by climate change. Occurrences of data on threatened and endangered species are frequently sparse which makes it difficult to analyse the species suitable habitat distribution using various modelling approaches. The current paper used maximum entropy (Maxent) and educational global climate model (EdGCM) modelling to predict and conserve the suitable habitat distributions for Tossa species in Bangladesh to the year 2100. Nine environmental variables, 239 occurrence data and two Representative Concentration Pathway scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) were used for the Maxent modelling to project the impact of climate change on the Tossa distributions. Furthermore, the EdGCM was used to study the climatic space suitability for the Tossa species in the context of Bangladesh. Both of the climatic scenarios were used for the prediction to the year 2100. The Maxent model performed better than random for the Tossa species with a high AUC value of 0.86. Under the RCP scenarios, the Maxent model predicted habitat reduction for RCP4.5 is 2%, RCP8.5 is 9% and EdGCM is 10.2% from the current localities. The predictive modelling approach presented here is promising and can be applied to other important species for conservation planning, monitoring and management, especially those under the threat of extinction due to climate change.

    Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present a novel method to estimate the optimal software testing time which minimizes the relevant expected software cost via a refined neural network approach with the grouped data, where the multi-stage look ahead prediction is carried out with a simple three-layer perceptron neural network with multiple outputs. Design/methodology/approach To analyze the software fault count data which follows a Poisson process with unknown mean value function, the authors transform the underlying Poisson count data to the Gaussian data by means of one of three data transformation methods, and predict the cost-optimal software testing time via a neural network. Findings In numerical examples with two actual software fault count data, the authors compare the neural network approach with the common non-homogeneous Poisson process-based software reliability growth models. It is shown that the proposed method could provide a more accurate and more flexible decision making than the common stochastic modeling approach. Originality/value It is shown that the neural network approach can be used to predict the optimal software testing time more accurately.

    Abstract: The necrotrophic fungal pathogen Pyrenophora tritici-repentis ( Ptr ) causes the foliar disease tan spot in both bread wheat and durum wheat. Wheat lines carrying the tan spot susceptibility gene Tsc1 are sensitive to the Ptr -produced necrotrophic effector (NE) Ptr ToxC. A compatible interaction results in leaf chlorosis, reducing yield by decreasing the photosynthetic area of leaves. Developing genetically resistant cultivars will effectively reduce disease incidence. Toward that goal, the production of chlorosis in response to inoculation with Ptr ToxC-producing isolates was mapped in two low-resolution biparental populations derived from LMPG-6 × PI 626573 (LP) and Louise × Penawawa (LouPen). In total, 58 genetic markers were developed and mapped, delineating the Tsc1 candidate gene region to a 1.4 centiMorgan (cM) genetic interval spanning 184 kb on the short arm of chromosome 1A. A total of nine candidate genes were identified in the Chinese Spring reference genome, seven with protein domains characteristic of resistance genes. Mapping of the chlorotic phenotype, development of genetic markers, both for genetic mapping and marker-assisted selection (MAS), and the identification of Tsc1 candidate genes provide a foundation for map-based cloning of Tsc1 .

    Abstract: This study tested the concurrent and construct validity of smartphone accelerometry measurement of sit-to-stand (STS) performance in individuals aged 65–89 years. Normal and fast STS times were recorded by smartphone accelerometer, force plate, and video motion systems concurrently, and isokinetic knee extension power and STS whole-body power were obtained. Normal and fast speed STS times from a smartphone accelerometer agreed closely with force plate and motion system methods (mean difference = 0.04 s). Normal and fast STS times were inversely related to isokinetic knee extension power ( r  = −.93, p   〈  .001 and r  = −.82, p   〈  .001, respectively) and STS whole-body power ( r  = −.76, p   〈  .001 and r  = −.70, p   〈  .001, respectively). The STS time obtained from a smartphone accelerometer was equivalent to the established, precise measures of STS time and was related to lower-extremity power, making it a potentially useful metric of lower-extremity function.

    Abstract: Cultivated tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum L.) accessions have been susceptible to the whitefly-transmitted begomoviruses Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) and Tomato mottle virus (ToMoV) that can cause serious crop damage. S . habrochaites accession LA1777 has been reported to be resistant to TYLCV. To locate putative virus resistance genes, 89 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) previously developed from LA1777 in a tomato background, LA1777 and the susceptible RIL parent E6203, were screened against the begomoviruses TYLCV and ToMoV. An initial study showed 18 RILs had less disease severity to TYLCV or ToMoV. Eight RILs had S. habrochaites alleles at TG27 (restriction fragment length polymorphism marker) on chromosome 1, three RILs had S. habrochaites alleles at TG202 on chromosome 7, and one RIL had S. habrochaites alleles at both marker loci. The RILs with these regions were intercrossed in 10 different cross combinations and F 2 seeds were then obtained. The F 2 progenies were inoculated separately with both viruses and then evaluated in the field. The F 2 plants with less disease severity were selected, but most did not have the markers from the hypothetical resistance regions. The F 3 progenies were then inoculated and rated for disease severity to both viruses. None of the F 3 s demonstrated any increased level of resistance, even if derived from F 2 s homozygous for the target regions from both chromosomes. All plants from every cross combination were susceptible for both TYLCV and ToMoV, suggesting that there is no begomovirus resistance in the LA1777 RIL population. Some limitations of capturing all genes in an RIL population derived from an outcrossing accession are discussed.

    Abstract: The selection of sugarcane genotypes with high sucrose content and good ratooning ability (RA) is an important objective of the Canal Point breeding program to improve the current profitability levels of the Florida sugarcane industry. In this study, thirteen test sugarcane genotypes and three checks were evaluated in three sand locations, Pahokee Produce Inc. (PP), Townsite farm (TS), and Lykes Brothers Inc. (PF), during three crop cycles (plant cane, first ratoon, and second ratoon). Multi-environment best linear unbiased predictors (BLUPs) were highly significant for commercially recoverable sucrose (CRS) and not significant for cane yield (CY) among genotypes. The ANOVA based on the RA values produced significant genotypic effects but a reduced RA diversity among the genotypes. The simultaneous selection for BLUP_CRS, BLUP_CY yield, and RA identified CP 14-4165 and CP 13-2340 as the most outstanding genotypes. The BLUP_GGE biplots method showed that the PP location was the most discriminative for BLUP_CY, whereas the TS was the ideal location. For BLUP_CRS, the three locations had similar abilities to discriminate genotypes and were positively and strongly correlated. The which-won-where graph indicated that CP 13-2340 showed the highest BLUP_CRS levels in TS and PP locations, while CP 14-4165 and CP 14-4588 were the top genotypes in the PF location. The results suggest that selecting genotypes with high CRS values is possible without compromising the genotype discrimination for CY. CP 14-4165 and CP 13-2340 are resistant to most diseases and genetically diverse.

    Abstract: An experiment was conducted at Microbiology Laboratory of Plant Pathology Department, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) during 2007 to determine the virulence and variation in symptom development by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli isolates at different growth stages such as emergence and early vegetative stage, branching and rapid vegetative growth stage and early flowering stage of Bush bean, and in-vitro control of the pathogen with the selected fungicides. Eight isolates of this pathogen were collected from different pathology laboratory of BARI, BAU and BSMRAU. IS3 isolate collected from Bushbean seeds were found most virulent in pathogenicity test such as pre-emergence mortality, root rot, root lesion, leaf yellowing and wilting when this isolate was inoculated at different growth stages of bush bean. Four fungicides such as Vitavax, Rovral, Cupravit and Aimcozim were evaluated invitro to test the efficacy against isolate IS3.
