Abstract:
SUMMARY. — The Swiss botanists Augustin-Pyramus de Candolle and Alphonse de Candolle were both interested in the social problems of their time. They were also concerned with scientific education, not only academic learning but also popularizing, as the former's Mémoires et souvenirs and the latter' s Histoire des sciences et des savants show. Their ideas in this area are bound up with their epistemology. Several testimonies portray Augustin-Pyramus as a liberal and efficient teacher, and one finds explicit statements on the art of teaching scattered throughout his works. Alphonse de Candolle, although more conservative than his father, mentions expressly educational reformers.
