    Notes: Summary 10 species of Mysidacea were sampled during the Polarstern and Walther Herwig SIBEX cruises to the Antarctic Peninsula region from 1983 to 1986. The commonest were Antarctomysis maxima, A. ohlini and Mysidetes posthon. For these species the size and maturity stage composition as well as the length-weight relationships are given. The species considered are growing slowly and attain a long life span, M. posthon reached age class 3+, A. ohlini at least lived as long as 5 years, while A. maxima was found to be of age 5+ in the Peninsula area and probably 6+ in the Weddell Sea. The generation time of Antarctomysis species was 4 years and 3 years in Mysidetes posthon. Fecundity was low, mean number of offspring was about 13 for M. posthon and 21 for A. maxima. Rematuration was observed for the species A. maxima, indicating several spawning events during its life span. Biomass production is low for A. maxima, shown by a P/B-index of 0.98. Mortality of this species was estimated to be Z=1.1, which indicates that 33% of the specimens of an age group survive until the next year. The distribution and spatial separation of the two Antarctomysis species is discussed.

    Notes: Summary The spring (November) and early summer (December) distribution pattern and demography of Euphausia superba in the seasonally ice covered areas of the north-western Weddell Sea are described. Sampling with a Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT) and during SCUBA diving were undertaken in the pack-ice during the EPOS expedition 1988/1989 of RV Polarstern. These data were compared with former cruises during late winter (October) and summer (February). The biomass values of krill (1–27 g/m2) in the water column within the ice covered areas were of the same order of magnitude as earlier acoustic estimates in the ice-edge region of the same area. No significant correlation between percentage ice cover and krill abundance in the water column was found. Cluster analyses of size frequency distributions and maturity stage composition revealed the demography of the animals sampled. Samples obtained by SCUBA and RMT are compatible and results show a geographic and demographic separation of the krill. It is proposed that krill in the northern zone are largely emigrants from the Bellingshausen Sea, while the krill in the southern zone are of eastern Weddell Sea origin. Further studies concentrating on the under-ice distribution of krill are recommended.

    Notes: Abstract The distributional features and physical characteristics of 4830 krill (Euphausia superba Dana) aggregations detected acoustically in the Southwest Atlantic between 26 January and 21 February 1981 are described. Results are compared with aggregations detected in the Indian Ocean. Aggregations in the Atlantic were larger, closer to the surface and to each other than in the Indian Ocean. Similar patterns in the distribution of aggregation spacing along survey transects were found in the two areas, although the pattern of spacings in the Atlantic indicates differences in the scale of aggregation. Serial interdependence of aggregation variables was minimal in the Atlantic, with aggregation thickness, length and spacing showing weak inter-relationships. Weak functional association, between water depth and aggregation thickness was evident. Investigation of variability in aggregation structure in relation to prevailing environmental conditions gave equivocal results and no clear association between any aggregation variable and prevailing hydrography was observed. The implications of these results for future studies on krill aggregation are discussed in relation to a conceptual framework which was developed from the present results and aimed at linking krill aggregation characteristics to environmental features.

    Notes: Abstract The Elephant Island region (Antarctic Peninsula) was selected as a long-term monitoring site to describe the interannual variability of important krill stock parameters. The analysis reviewed and updated krill density and proportional recruitment indices. Krill absolute recruitment and biomass from net sampling surveys are introduced as additional indices from this time series. New survey results from the past two seasons indicate a very successful 1994/1995 year-class and slightly below average proportional recruitment of the 1995/1996 krill year-class. Absolute recruitment of the 1995/1996 year-class was high compared to preceding years, because total stock size was relatively high in 1996/1997. After a period of low krill density and biomass in the area for almost a decade, krill density and biomass have increased. Caution is expressed as to whether this observed increase represents a long-term recovery of the stock.

    Notes: Abstract Five species of Antarctic euphausiid crustaceans were studied from the Antarctic Peninsula and the southeastern Weddell Sea. Life spans range from two years for Euphausia frigida to six years for the krill Euphausia superba. Growth in length and weight was calculated by non-linear regressions. No difference in growth of krill were observed between the Antarctic Peninsula area and the eastern Weddell Sea. Former opinions that differ are discussed. Seasonal growth was re-analyzed for the species Euphausia triacantha, and a three-year life span proposed. Male Euphausia crystallorophias have a shorter life span than females, while their growth rate is similar. A short description of the life cycle and generation time of each species is given. In general, Antarctic euphausiids seem to remature and spawn at least twice and in some cases three times during their life, except for E. frigida which spawns only once.
