    Notes: This study was designed to provide evidence for elucidating the mechanisms of neurokinin-3 receptor (NK3) in spinal pain modulation. First, colocalization of NK3 with the µ-opioid receptor (MOR1) was studied in the spinal dorsal horn of the rat. Confocal microscopy showed that about 44% of NK3-expressing neurons in laminae I and II were immunoreactive for MOR1, which corresponded to about 93% of the total population of MOR1-containing neurons in these laminae. Second, the relationship between NK3/MOR1-coexpressing neurons and those that express nitric oxide synthase (NOS) was examined by using a triple immunofluorescent staining method. About 37% of NK3-immunoreactive neurons were also NOS-immunoreactive, which constituted about 82% of NOS-immunoreacitve neurons in the superficial laminae. However, no triple-labelled neurons were detected. The present results indicate that there are two major distinct subpopulations of NK3-expressing neurons in the superficial dorsal horn, which suggests that the involvement of NK3 receptor in spinal nociception could be mediated by two distinct mechanisms, i.e. opioid and nitric oxide.

    Notes: Monodisperse FePt nanoparticles were synthesized by thermal decomposition of Fe(CO)5and reduction of Pt(acac)2 at low temperature of 160–180 °C by using kerosene as a solvent.     Notes: Abstract. The localisation of the neurokinin 3 receptor (NK3r) in the rat gastrointestinal tract has been studied by using a polyclonal antiserum against the C-terminal portion (amino acids 388–452) of the rat NK3r. In the oesophagus, immunoreactivity for the NK3r was found on smooth muscle cells of the muscularis mucosae. NK3r immunoreactivity was not present on muscle cells of other regions. Nerve cell bodies immunoreactive for NK3r were seen in the myenteric and submucous plexuses of the small and large intestine, but not in the stomach or oesophagus. Immunoreactivity was largely confined to nerve cell surfaces. The reaction product was on the cell soma and initial parts of axons. Reactivity was not seen on nerve terminals. Immunoreactive nerve cells had Dogiel Type II morphology. Patterns of co-localisation of NK3r and immunoreactivity for other markers were examined in the ileum, to provide a basis from which to deduce the functional identity of NK3r-immunoreactive nerve cells. Most of the NK3r-immunoreactive nerve cells were also immunoreactive for the calcium-binding proteins, calretinin and calbindin, and all were immunoreactive for the NK1 receptor (NK1r). Nerve cells that were immunoreactive for nitric oxide synthase were not immunoreactive for either NK3r or NK1r. The projections of the calbindin and calretinin neurons were determined by nerve lesion studies. Their morphology, projections to the mucosa and other ganglia and immunoreactivity for the calcium-binding proteins suggest that the NK3r-immunoreactive neurons are intrinsic sensory neurons.

    Notes: Abstract. A model for the temperature dependence of exchange bias and coercivity in epitaxial ferromagnetic (FM)/ antiferromagnetic (AFM) bilayers is developed. In this model, the interface coupling includes two contributions, the direct coupling and the spin-flop coupling. The temperature dependence arises from the thermal disturbance to the system, involved in the thermal fluctuations of magnetization of AFM grains and the temperature modulation of the relevant magnetic parameters. In addition, the randomness of original orientations of easy axes of AFM grains after field cooling is taken into account. A self-consistent calculation scheme is proposed and numerical treatment is carried out. The results show that the temperature dependence of exchange bias and coercivity is closely related to the sizes of AFM grains and the interface exchange coupling constants. Especially, the exchange bias will have a peak and the blocking temperature will increase if the spin-flop coupling plays a role. On the other hand, the original orientation distribution of easy axes of AFM grains will affect exchange bias and coercivity prominently. The prediction has been well supported by experiments.

    Notes: Transmembrane protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPases) comprise a newly identified class of receptor-like molecules. In most cases their ligands and the substrates they dephosphorylate are not known. In order to begin to explore the functions of the PTPases in cell physiology and in mammalian development, we examined the expression patterns of two closely related receptor-type tyrosine phosphatase genes, namely LAR and PTPδ, in fetal rat lung and in selected adult rat tissues. In the lung, in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry show that the LAR mRNA and protein are expressed exclusively in the epithelium. In the early embryonic or fetal lung (day 13 to 18) LAR is expressed by all of the epithelial cells of the forming bronchial tree. This widespread pattern of expression is lost later in fetal life (day 21) as the lung matures and acquires the morphologic and biochemical features of the adult organ. LAR gene expression is then confined to two epithelial progenitor cells of the distal airways, namely the bronchiolar Clara cell and the alveolar type II cell. The LAR gene products were also found abundantly expressed in epithelial progenitor cells of adult esophagus, skin, and small intestine, all of which are continuously renewing epithelia. The rat PTPδ gene, on the other hand, is specifically expressed in the mesenchyme of the developing lung. The level of the PTPδ mRNA decreases as the lung matures. These results suggest that the two closely related receptor-type tyrosine phosphatases are differentially expressed in a tissue-specific fashion. They are expressed mostly in proliferating cells or in cells which have potential to proliferate. Therefore, one function of the two receptor-like tyrosine phosphatases may be to regulate proliferation and/or differentiation of different types of cells during development, during normal cell turnover, and during adult tissue repair. © 1995 wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Description: Increased natural and anthropogenic stresses have threatened the Earth’s ability to meet growing human demands of food, energy and water (FEW) in a sustainable way. Although much progress has been made in the provision of individual component of FEW, it remains unknown whether there is an optimized strategy to balance the FEW nexus as a whole, reduce air and water pollution, and mitigate climate change on national and global scales. Increasing FEW conflicts in the agroecosystems make it an urgent need to improve our understanding and quantification of how to balance resource investment and enhance resource use efficiencies in the FEW nexus. Therefore, we propose an integrated modeling system of the FEW nexus by coupling an ecosystem model, an economic model, and a regional climate model, aiming to mimic the interactions and feedbacks within the ecosystem-human-climate systems. The trade-offs between FEW benefit and economic cost in excess resource usage, environmental degradation, and climate consequences will be quantitatively assessed, which will serve as sustainability indicators for agricultural systems (including crop production, livestock and aquaculture). We anticipate that the development and implementation of such an integrated modeling platform across world’s regions could build capabilities in understanding the agriculture-centered FEW nexus and guiding policy and land management decision making for a sustainable future.

    Description: Prrxl1 -CreER T2 transgenic mice expressing tamoxifen-inducible Cre recombinase were generated by modifying a Prrxl1 -containing BAC clone. Cre recombination activity was examined in Prrxl1 -CreER T2 ; Rosa26 reporter mice at various embryonic and postnatal stages. Pregnant mice were treated with a single dose of tamoxifen at embryonic day (E) 9.5 or E12.5, and X-gal staining was performed 2 days later. Strong X-gal staining was observed in the somatosensory ganglia (e.g., dorsal root and trigeminal ganglia) and the first central sites for processing somatosensory information (e.g., spinal dorsal horn and trigeminal nerve-associated nuclei). When tamoxifen was administered at postnatal day (P) 20 or in adulthood (P120), strong Cre recombination activity was present in the primary somatosensory ganglia, while weak Cre recombination activity was found in the spinal dorsal horn, mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus, principal sensory trigeminal nucleus, and spinal trigeminal nucleus.
