    Notes: Abstract An electrochemical reactor packed with stainless steel fibres was used to oxidize a complexed copper cyanide solution. The reactor reduced the cyanide content from over 2000 p.p.m. to less than 100 p.p.m. in 4h. The energy consumption (kWh (kg CN−)−1) for a bipolar setup was larger than for the parallel setup. An analog circuit analysis qualitatively agrees with the experimental results.

    Notes: Abstract Adding a magnetic field gradient to the conventional TG system constructs the magnetic thermogravimetry analysis (TG(M) i.e. Faraday methods) and the magnetic derivative thermogravimetry (DTG(M)) techniques. We used the techniques to study the nanocrystalline processes of the FeCuNbSiB and FeCuNbCoSiB amorphous alloys. Some problems of their applications such as the characteristic temperature Tmin and TC are also discussed in detail.

    Notes: Abstract Poly (methacrylic acid) gels (PMAA gels) of various degrees of crosslinking were prepared and the dissociation behavior of these gels was examined; the swelling behavior was investigated as a function of the solution pH values. A reentrant phenomenon of swelling was observed and interpreted based on the Flory-Huggins equation and the Donnan equilibrium formula. Moreover, adsorption of L-lysine, oligo(L-lysine)s (Lys-n,n=3, 9, and 19) and poly(L-lysine) onto PMAA gels from aqueous solutions was investigated under different conditions of pH and concentration of adsorbate. The adsorption ratio of L-lysine onto PMAA gel is dependent on both the pH of solution and the degree of crosslinking. In a pH range between 8 and 9, the protonated form of L-lysine is strongly adsorbed on the PMAA gel by electrostatic interactions. Oligomers and polymer of L-lysine are adsorbed in a somewhat different way from the monomeric L-lysine. In addition, the desorption behavior of L-lysine from PMAA gels by a change in pH was also investigated.

    Notes: Abstract The σ—T and dσ/dT—T curves of the FeCuNbSiB amorphous alloy, which are the relationship between the total saturated magnetic moment per unit mass σ and temperature, are investigated by magnetic thermogravimetry analysis (TG(M)) technique. It is found that the crystallization process of the samples can be divided into five stages. The studies of samples annealed in temperature range of 480–610°C for 1h show that when the annealing temperature (Ta) is less than 540°C, the quantity of nanocrystalline α-Fe(Si) phase increases evidently with Ta, and the Curie temperature (TC) of residual amorphous phase also increases linearly with Ta, i.e. TC=0.52Ta+91.7°C, with correlation coefficient γ=0.98. The variation of volume fraction of α-Fe(Si) nanocrystalline phase or residual amorphous phase with Ta is measured by TG(M) technique.

    Notes: Abstract The agronomic effectiveness of three rock phosphates (Idaho, Florida and North Carolina) as influenced by mycorrhizal inoculation withGlomus aggregatum was evaluated using small banana (Musa paradisiaca L.) corms as planting material. The treatments included superphosphate and a no-P control. The soil was fumigated to eliminate mycorrhizal propagules. The amount of P added was based on the quantity of material needed as superphosphate to establish 0.2 mg P L−1 in solution. Plants were grown in an Oxisol in 9-liter pots for 3 months after growth commenced. Plant dry weight, P percentage in the 3rd leaf, and total P uptake were increased when plants fertilized with insoluble rock phosphates were inoculated with mycorrhiza-producing fungi. Phosphorus uptake by plants fertilized with Idaho, Florida, and North Carolina rock phosphates was 0.18, 0.42, and 0.97 as much as by plants fertilized with superphosphate. The beneficial effect of mycorrhiza on phosphate uptake was 136, 30, 2 and 24% for plants fertilized with Idaho, Florida and North Carolina rock phosphate, and superphosphate, respectively.

    Description: DyMn 2 O 5 is an extraordinary example in the family of multiferroic manganites and it accommodates both the 4 f and 3 d magnetic ions with strong Dy-Mn (4 f -3 d ) coupling. The electric polarization origin is believed to arise not only from the Mn spin interactions but also from the Dy-Mn coupling. Starting from proposed scenario on ferrielectricity in DyMn 2 O 5 where the exchange-strictions associated with the Mn 3+ -Mn 4+ -Mn 3+ blocks and Dy 3+ -Mn 4+ -Dy 3+ blocks generate the two ferroelectric sublattices, we perform a set of characterizations on the structure, magnetism, and electric polarization of Dy 1- x Y x Mn 2 O 5 in order to investigate the roles of Dy-Mn coupling in manipulating the ferrielectricity. It is revealed that the non-magnetic Y substitution of Dy suppresses gradually the Dy 3+ spin ordering and the Dy-Mn coupling. Consequently, the ferroelectric sublattice generated by the exchange striction associated with the Dy 3+ -Mn 4+ -Dy 3+ blocks is destabilized, but the ferroelectric sublattice generated by the exchange striction associated with the Mn 3+ -Mn 4+ -Mn 3+ blocks remains less perturbed, enabling the ferrielectricity-ferroelectricity transitions with the Y substitution. A phenomenological ferrielectric domain model is suggested to explain the polarization reversal induced by the Y substitution. The present work presents a possible scenario of the multiferroic mechanism in not only DyMn 2 O 5 but probably also other RMn 2 O 5 members with strong 4 f -3 d coupling.

    Description: Childhood asthma, a growing health concern, has been associated with low birth weight and elevated body mass index. This study tested the hypothesis that overweight and obese adolescents with a history of low birth weight are at even greater risk of developing asthma. A cohort of 75,871 junior high school students was screened for asthma during 1995–1996 in Taiwan. Birth weight and estimated gestational age were obtained from the birth registry. Logistic regression and simple regression analyses were adjusted for confounding variables. Asthma was more prevalent in those with birth weights below 3,000 g and higher adolescent body mass indexes. Furthermore, those with both characteristics were consistently most likely to have asthma. Whether the asthma diagnosis among low-birth-weight subjects was assigned by physicians or medical questionnaire, the risks were elevated for both overweight (physician diagnosis: odds ratio = 1.41; medical questionnaire: odds ratio = 1.25) and obese (physician diagnosis: odds ratio = 1.38; medical questionnaire: odds ratio = 1.47) boys as well as overweight (physician diagnosis: odds ratio = 1.63; medical questionnaire: odds ratio = 1.30) and obese (physician diagnosis: odds ratio = 1.44; medical questionnaire: odds ratio = 1.32) girls ( P 〈 0.05). Low birth weight predisposes one to develop asthma, and excess body mass amplifies the risk. A sex difference was observed. This study suggests that prenatal care and nutritional counseling could reduce asthma prevalence.

    Description: The nature and pace of genome mutation is largely unknown. Because standard methods sequence DNA from populations of cells, the genetic composition of individual cells is lost, de novo mutations in cells are concealed within the bulk signal and per cell cycle mutation rates and mechanisms remain elusive. Although single-cell genome analyses could resolve these problems, such analyses are error-prone because of whole-genome amplification (WGA) artefacts and are limited in the types of DNA mutation that can be discerned. We developed methods for paired-end sequence analysis of single-cell WGA products that enable (i) detecting multiple classes of DNA mutation, (ii) distinguishing DNA copy number changes from allelic WGA-amplification artefacts by the discovery of matching aberrantly mapping read pairs among the surfeit of paired-end WGA and mapping artefacts and (iii) delineating the break points and architecture of structural variants. By applying the methods, we capture DNA copy number changes acquired over one cell cycle in breast cancer cells and in blastomeres derived from a human zygote after in vitro fertilization. Furthermore, we were able to discover and fine-map a heritable inter-chromosomal rearrangement t(1;16)(p36;p12) by sequencing a single blastomere. The methods will expedite applications in basic genome research and provide a stepping stone to novel approaches for clinical genetic diagnosis.

    Description: We have studied a hybrid nanoelectronic system which consists of an AlGaAs/GaAs two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in close proximity (~70 nm) to an Al superconducting nanofilm. By tuning the current through the Al film, we can change the conductance of the 2DEG and furthermore vary the effective disorder in the Al superconducting film in a controllable way. When a high current is injected into the film, screening which couples the Al film and the 2DEG results in a collapse of anti-symmetric behavior in the current-voltage characteristics, V(I) ~ -V(-I), which holds true in a conventional superconductor.     Description: The introduction of next generation sequencing methods in genome studies has made it possible to shift research from a gene-centric approach to a genome wide view. Although methods and tools to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms are becoming more mature, methods to identify and visualize structural variation (SV) are still in their infancy. Most genome browsers can only compare a given sequence to a reference genome; therefore, direct comparison of multiple individuals still remains a challenge. Therefore, the implementation of efficient approaches to explore and visualize SVs and directly compare two or more individuals is desirable. In this article, we present a visualization approach that uses space-filling Hilbert curves to explore SVs based on both read-depth and pair-end information. An interactive open-source Java application, called Meander , implements the proposed methodology, and its functionality is demonstrated using two cases. With Meander , users can explore variations at different levels of resolution and simultaneously compare up to four different individuals against a common reference. The application was developed using Java version 1.6 and Processing.org and can be run on any platform. It can be found at http://homes.esat.kuleuven.be/~bioiuser/meander .
