Abstract:
Life cycle assessment (LCA) often seems to be "timeless", since it compares functional units of analysed alternatives per se. It is demonstrated that temporal aspects enter LCAs, however, in all main components from goal definition and scoping to valuation in an ad hoc manner; in fact,
it cannot be without time. Its methodology and practical relevance could be improved substantially by addressing temporal issues explicitly. Proposals on the integration of time aspects into LCA are made taking into account results of ecological time research.
